What caused the POWER-SHIFT in India?

16th may 2014 witnessed the BJP’s thrashing victory in the 2014 General Election. With 31% vote share, the BJP whipped away 282 seats. Congress was at the center for last ten years but in this election, they are brought down to 44 seats.

The INC was founded in 1885 by Allan Octavian Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha, Womesh Chandra Bannerjee, Surendranath Banerjee, Monomohun Ghose, Mahadev Govind Ranade and William Wedderburn. INC was an integral part of the independence movement with over 15 million members and over 70 million participants. In the 67 yrs of independence, congress has been to power for 49 years and thus can be called powerful. So then, what happened to the powerful organization? What caused the POWER SHIFT?

Before going into what caused the power-shift, lets understand what is power? According to Alvin Toffler, there are three forms of power viz. muscle, money and knowledge. Muscle is the lowest form of power, money – the moderate form of power and knowledge is the highest form of power.

INC has the muscle and money power and with its help they ruled India for such long. But their muscle-money power showed no result this time. This is because, India faced a transition from the muscle-money to knowledge. In past years Indians have become educated and sophisticated. the muscle-money power cant penetrate them anymore. While this power-shift went unnoticed by INC, BJP sensed it soon.

The BJP followed the power-shift and molded themselves accordingly. Knowledge is the highest form of power and they had it. NaMo played very strategically. His character is like the fictional character Jim Moriarty who has been described as a genius, a philosopher, an abstract thinker. He has a brain of the first order. He is like a spider in the center of its web, but that web has a thousand radiations, and he knows well every quiver of each of them.

Namo was at the center of the web(elections). He knew exactly where all other elements (other politicians) were and what they were doing. He would find out about any machinations against him and dismantle it before hand without giving any intimation to the world. This election was like the game of chess. To win a game of chess, one must look the game through his opponent eyes. Namo did the same. He knew what others were up to and utilized the knowledge in a very efficient manner. He hid his weakness which is to say the 2002 riots. He acted like a seasoned politician during rallies and a statesman during the interviews. He knew exactly what topics to broach and bring his opponent down. In short, he had the knowledge and utilized it in his favor.

The power shifted from INC to BJP but more importantly power shifted from muscle-money to knowledge.
