1. National Strategy Day to be celebrated on November 4
(i) The World Economic Forum will bring together a multi-stakeholder group to increase
economic growth and social inclusion, make agriculture profitable, foster youth
employability, ensure access to sustainable energy, and achieve smarter approaches
urbanisation on the National Strategy Day, which will be observed on November 4.
(ii) The five key areas which will be focussed will be (a) Bridging the skills-opportunity mismatch, (b) Powering India with clean energy, (c) Making agriculture a sustainable engine of growth, (d) Taking financial inclusion to the next phase, (e) Planning for smart urbanisation.
2. Punjabi is the third most common language in Canadian Parliament
(i) After English and French, Punjabi has now become the third most common language in
the House of Commons in Canadian Parliament after 20 Punjabi-speaking candidates
were elected to the parliament in October this year.
(ii) Reportedly, 23 lawmakers of Indian-origin were elected after general elections that were
held on October 19, 2015. Of the 23 lawmakers, three do not speak Punjabi.
3. Tata Motors appoints Lionel Messi as its global brand ambassador
(i) Ace footballer Lionel Messi was appointed as the brand ambassador of Tata cars
and utility vehicles (UVs) in India and globally.
(ii) This decision is an attempt to connect to
the young, high profile mobile car buyers in a competitive market wherein rival brands
like Nano, Safari, Zest and Bolt, have been fairly successful.
(iii) Mayank Pareek, president
of the passenger vehicle business unit at Tata Motors said the idea behind engaging
Messi is to “break from the clutter”.
4. Karnataka seeks to share waters of river Mahadayi
(i) Drought-hit Karnataka is planning to file an Interlocutory Application (IA) before a tribunal
on sharing waters of river Mahadayi. It will also seek permission to bring 7.56 TMCft of
water from two tributaries of the river to meet drinking water needs of districts in North
Karnataka, which is among the worst-hit regions.
(ii) Marathwada in Maharashtra is also
battling effects of drought as this year’s monsoon ended with 14 % deficit.
5. Deepak Singhal appointed as the Executive Director of the RBI
(i) On November 2, 2015, Deepak Singhal was appointed as the Executive Director of the
Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Previously, Singhal was the Regional Director in-charge of
RBI in New Delhi.
(ii) Further, he has also headed the Department of Banking Operations
and Development, Human Resource Development Department and Premises
Department at the central office of RBI and office at Belapur, Navi Mumbai.
(iii) In his current role, Singhal will be in-charge of the Central Security Cell, Corporate
Strategy and Budget Department, Department of Corporate Services, Human Resource
Management Department (including HR Operations Unit), Rajbhasha Department and
Right to Information Act Division.
6. Nico Rosberg wins 2015 Mexican Grand Prix
(i) Mercedes Driver Nico Rosberg of Germany recently won the 2015
Mexican Grand Prix. He defeated his teammate Lewis Hamilton of Britain in a seven-
point lead race held at the Autdromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico.
(ii) This was
Rosberg’s fourth title of the season (first three being in Spain, Monaco and Australia) and
12th title of his career.
