FLAME Learner’s Series: 4 steps to submitting a strong application

Dear Aspirant,

Greetings from FLAME University – Pioneers of Liberal Education in India!

Under the academic leadership of Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Devi Singh (Former Director, IIM Lucknow and MDI Gurgaon), FLAME University has been established to provide a nurturing environment to students by pushing the barriers of traditional education. We offer programs across various disciplines, anchored in the core ethos of liberal education. The university offers undergraduate programs (B.A., B.Sc., BBA) and postgraduate programs (MBA, MBA [Communications Management]) through its four schools – FLAME School of Liberal Education, FLAME School of Business, FLAME School of Communication and FLAME School of Fine & Performing Arts.

As you take your first step towards choosing the right MBA destination, we would like to introduce you to the FLAME Learner’s Series – a series of informative articles to help you for your admission selection rounds across universities.

To begin with, it is important to understand what universities across the globe look for in a student. Have you figured that out? If not, the following pointers may help you streamline your thought process.

Key points to remember while applying to universities:

    • Aptitude Test Score: Many leading universities in India and abroad prefer that the applicant has appeared for an entrance test like CAT/GMAT/XAT/CMAT etc. These tests help the admissions committee gauge your problem-solving skills under pre-defined time limits. They demonstrate your ability to handle pressure apart from basic understanding of verbal and quantitative techniques. A high aptitude test score often assists students seeking scholarship or financial aid from the university.
    • Pre-application Reading: Universities are increasingly laying emphasis on the non-academic profile of prospective students. The kind of books/articles you read shape your thought process. Before taking the plunge into management education, you must undertake reading about the university, the university’s core ethos, books and articles related to your field of study or interest, newspapers, magazines, etc. to gain holistic understanding of the path you intend to choose.
    • Statement of Purpose: A Statement of Purpose (SOP) is one of the most important elements of the admission selection process and is a direct outcome of the pre-application reading stage. The SOP reflects your story. Members of the admissions committee are looking to find out what value you would bring to the table once you join the university. It is important that you devote a good amount of time drafting a strong SOP as the same can make or break your chances of admission to a reputed university. Universities may alternately ask you to answer qualitative questions in their application forms instead of the SOP but the underlying crux for both will remain the same.
    • Communication Skills: Having the right knowledge about your program of interest is important. But what is more important is to showcase that knowledge in an effective and efficient manner. Students are the flag-bearers of any university. They carry the brand of the university to the world. Thus, universities emphasize on clear and articulate communication skills. Effective communication skills help students clear group discussion and personal interview rounds of universities.

The journey has only begun. Keep these points in mind and draft an effective application.
