1. Nasim Zaidi appointed new Chief Election
Commissioner of India

i. Nasim Zaidi has became the new Chief Election Commissioner of India. The
appointed was approved by the President of India.

ii. He will replace Harishankar Brahma who will demit the office on the 18th
of this month.

iii. A
1976 batch IAS officer, Dr Zaidi has worked in the Civil Aviation Ministry for
a long time.

iv. He will assume the charge of office of the Chief Election Commissioner
on the 19th of this month. He will have tenure up to July, 2017 when he
attains the age of 65.

2. Suvo Sarkar named ‘Retail Banker of the
Year in Middle East’

i. Suvo
Sarkar an Indian banker in UAE has been named ‘Retail Banker of the Year in
Middle East’, a prestigious award given to global banking leaders for playing
an instrumental role in transforming retail bank operations.

ii. He is an alumni IIM Calcutta and worked
as a Emirates NBD General Manager for Retail Banking and Wealth Management, was
awarded at the Asian Banker Excellence in Retail Financial Services Awards 2015
recently held in Singapore.

iii. The award
function is the largest retail banking gathering in Asia.

iv. The Retail
Banker of the Year award is one of the highest forms of recognition given to a
global retail banking leader for playing an instrumental role in transforming
the bank’s operations and also making a strong impact on the wider retail
banking landscape in a country.

3. PM on 9-day visit to France, Germany and
Canada

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for Paris on a 9-day visit to
France, Germany and Canada this afternoon.

ii. He will reach French capital Paris tonight and will hold talks with
French President Francois Hollande tomorrow.

iii. During his France visit Prime Minister’s agenda will be on; investments,
civil nuclear energy, infrastructure, Defence, space programme and smart city
projects.

iv. On the second leg of his visit, the Prime Minister will reach the German
city of Hannover on Sunday. He will reach Canadian capital Ottawa on Tuesday on
the final leg of his visit.

4. Tamil writer Jayakanthan passed away

i. Jnanpith
awarded Tamil writer Jayakanthan, passed away in in Chennai last night after a
prolonged illness.

ii. He was 81 and is survived by wife, two
daughters and a son.
iii. He authored over 35 novels and
novellas, innumerable short stories and two autobiographies besides writing
articles and composing poems.

5. Noted singer EM Hanifa passes away

i. Noted singer
EM Hanifa whose voice transcended religious lines died yesterday at Chennai. He
was 97.

ii. Of the many songs that he sang
“Iraivanidam Kaiyenthungal ” (look up to God he never says no) was an
evergreen liked by all crossing across religious barriers.

6. Saina drops to World No.2

i. Saina Nehwal dropped to 2nd rank in
World Badminton ranking after facing defeat from reigning
Olympic champion Lee Xuerui.

ii. She became the first Indian woman to reach
No.1 last Thursday after finishing runner-up to reigning World Champion
Carolina Marin at All England and winning the India Open in March.

7. Nuclear-capable Dhanush missile successfully test-fired

i. India today successfully test-fired its
nuclear-capable Dhanush ballistic missile with a strike range of 350
km from a naval ship off the Odisha coast.

ii. The surface-to-surface Dhanush, a naval
variant of India’s indigenously-developed Prithvi missile, was test fired from
a ship in the Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast by the Strategic Force Command
(SFC) of the defence force.

iii. Dhanush missile is capable of carrying
conventional as well as nuclear payload of 500 kg and hit both land and sea-
based targets.
