1. 2015 Wimbledon Championship concludes with great wins for India
a) Serbian player Novak Djokovic defeated Switzerland’s Roger Federer in men’s singles finals and claimed his third Wimbledon title.
b) In the women’s singles final, top-seeded American player Serena Williams won the title after defeating Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. It is her fourth consecutive Grand Slam title.
c) Indian player Sania Mirza along her with her Swiss partner Martina Hingis defeated second-seeded Russian pair Ekaterina Makanrova & Elena Vesnina in women’s doubles final. With this win Mirza became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam trophy in women’s doubles category.
d) Veteran tennis player Leander Paes also made India proud by winning a Wimbledon mixed doubles title with his Swiss partner Martina Hingis against Austrian player Alexander Peya and his Hungarian partner Timea Babos.
e) Netherlands player Jean-Julien Rojer along with his Romanian partner Horia Tecau triumphed in the men’s doubles final.
f) 17-year-old Indian player Sumit Nagal also bagged a Wimbledon title this year in the boy’s doubles category with his Vietnamese partner L Hoàng Nam.
2. Indian Prime Minister’s visit to six Central Asian countries concludes.
a) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to India after his six-nation tour to Russia & other Central Asian countries namely, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan & Turkmenistan.
b) During this visit PM Modi also attended the 7thBRICS summit & Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) 2015 summit held in Ufa city, Russia.
c) India & Kyrgyzstan have inked 4 mutual cooperation agreements in the field of defence, elections, sphere of standards & culture.
d) India & Turkmenistan have signed 7 agreements to improve bilateral cooperation. The agreements are in the field of supply of chemical products, sports, science and technology, yoga & traditional medicine, tourism and defence. An MoU was signed between Foreign Service Institutes of both nations.
e) India & Kazakhstan have inked five agreements to enhance bilateral cooperation. The agreements are in the field of defence, railways, uranium supply, sports and transfer of sentenced prisoners.
f) India & Tajikistan have pledged to intensify measures to combat terrorism. Both the countries have also signed two agreements in the fields of culture & skill development.
3. Patnitop Tunnel set to open in 2016
a) National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) engineers began work on the final section of the Patnitop tunnel between Chenani & Nashri.
b) This tunnel connects Chenani with Nashri on the National Highway-1A (NH1A).
c) Due to snowfall & avalanches in the winter season at Patnitop, traffic disruptions are regular on NH1A. This tunnel will avoid such disturbances and also keep communications steady.
d) At 9.2 kms, it is India’s longest road tunnel. It is a part of India’s ambitious 286 km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
4. Tata Steel conferred with Golden Peacock Award
a) Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division has been conferred with Golden Peacock Environment Management Award (GPEMA) 2015, in New Delhi.
b) The company was awarded for its responsible environmental practices, resource management and upgradation of employees’ skills through training.
c) This award is a prestigious recognition to the organisation. The award was instituted by Institute of Directors in 1991.
5. Ex-environment minister pens book on environmental decision making
a) Former Environment Minister Jayram Ramesh has recently published a book named Green Signals: Ecology, Growth, & Democracy in India.
b) The book talks about the environmental decision making in India since 1991.
c) Jayram Ramesh is currently the chairman of Future Earth’s Engagement Committee. Future Earth is a research forum on global sustainability.
6. DRDO test-fires Nag anti-tank missile from helicopter platform
a) India has tested its indigenously developed Nag anti-tank missile from a helicopter at the Chandhan firing range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
b) Helicopter-launched Nag (HeliNa) has been developed by Defence Research & Development Organisation under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
c) Nag is a 3rd generation ‘fire-and-forget’ anti-tank missile with a range of 7-8 km.
7. SBI partners with bank bazaar.com
a) State Bank of India signed a tripartite MoU with online financial product aggregator bankbazaar.com and the bank’s subsidiary, SBICAP Securities Ltd. (SSL).
b) This agreement allows SBI to display its housing loan products on bankbazaar.com. This will provide an online platform for home loan borrowers and also enable doorstep delivery.
8. ISRO launches satellite-based navigation system
a) ISRO has launched its satellite-based air navigation services. With this, India has joined a league comprising US, European Union (EU) & Japan, which have similar systems.
b) It is known as GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system. It is intended to provide accurate navigational services over the Bay of Bengal, South East Asia, Indian Ocean, Middle East & the African region.
c) GAGAN fills an important gap in coverage areas of the EU’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) & Japan’s Multi-functional Satellite Augmentation System (MSAS) coverage areas.
d) A.S. Ganeshan is the project director of GAGAN, ISRO Satellite Centre.
