1. Canada agreed to supply Uranium to India
i. Canada has agreed to supply 3,000 metric tonnes of uranium to India under a $254 million five-year deal to power Indian atomic reactors.
ii. The agreement for uranium supply was signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper after comprehensive talks in Ottawa, Canada.
iii. Canada’s Cameco Corporation will supply uranium to India for next five years starting from this year. These supplies will be under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.
iv. The agreement comes in line with the Canada- India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement that took effect in 2013.
Note: Canada is the second-largest producer of uranium globally and is the third country to supply uranium to India after Russia and Kazakhstan.
2. Mohan Kumar appointed new Ambassador of India to France
i. Dr. Mohan Kumar was appointed as the next Ambassador of India to France. He will succeed Arun Kumar who was appointed Ambassador to the United States.
ii. He is a 1981-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. Prior to this assignment, he was serving as Ambassador of India to Bahrain
3. BHEL, partnered with INTMA to set power plant in Kazakhstan
i. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Russian company INTMA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a gas-based power project in Kazakhstan.
ii. The MoU aims to set forth a path to combine the BHEL’s competence in design and manufacturing of power plants and INTMA’s strength in handling EPC contracts so as to bid and execute projects of mutual interest in Russia and Kazakhstan.
4. India successfully test-fires Agni-III missile
i. India today successfully test-fired nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-III.
ii. Agni-III is surface-to-Surface missile with strike range of 3,000 km. The missile test fire from a mobile launcher at Integrated Test Range in Wheeler Island of Dhamra.
iii. Agni-III has a length of 17 metres and launch weight of around 48 tonnes. Agni-II has already been inducted in the armed forces since June 2011.
5. Former Nepal PM Surya Bahadur Thapa passed away
i. Former Nepal Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa passed away at a private hospital near here where he was undergoing treatment for stomach cancer. He was 87.
ii. He was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon on March 29. He was a post bypass surgery patient.
iii. He served as Nepal’s Prime Minister three times before 1990. After multi-party democracy was established in 1990, he formed the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and held the post of Prime Minister twice.
iv. He stepped down in 2005. He was the oldest member of Nepal’s Constituent Assembly which is currently drafting a constitution.
6. Laureus Sports Awards 2015 announced, Tendulkar inducted in the Laureus Academy
i. Novak Djokovic has been named the Laureus Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus Sports Awards on Wednesday.
ii. Gen-ze-be Dibaba has been awarded the women’s title, while Germany’s World Cup-winning squad received the best team award.
ii. Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final to win his seventh Grand Slam title and supplant Rafael Nadal as No. 1 in the world.
iii. The Sportswoman of the Year award went to Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba who has set three world records over the last 14 months in the 1,500-metre, 3,000-metre and 5,000-metre indoor events.
iv. Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo was named the winner of the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year award.
v. Sachin Tendulkar and five other new members inducted in the Laureus Academy. Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid are the other Indian cricketers to have received this recognition.
vi. Two-times grand slam champion and retired tennis player Li Na received the Laureus Exceptional Achievement award.
7. Saina Nehwal regains No.1 ranking
i. Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has regained the number one position in international rankings after China’s Li Xuerui dropped a couple of rungs to third in the latest list issued on Thursday.
ii. Saina, the first Indian woman shuttler to be world number one after her India Open Grand Prix Gold triumph earlier in April, had dropped to the second spot following her semifinal finish in the Malaysia Open Super Series.
