1. International Mother Language Day observed today
i. International
Mother Language Day observed today across the world. The day is celebrated
every year on 21 February 2015. The year 2015 is the 15th anniversary of
International Mother Language Day.
ii. The
theme for the year 2015 is Inclusive Education through and with Language – Language Matters.
iii. The day is
observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural
diversity and multilingualism.
iv. The day, February
21, represents the date in 1952 when students from Bangladesh demonstrating for
recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of
the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what
is now Bangladesh.
2. Apollo
Hospitals inks pact with Republic of Macedonia
i. Apollo Hospitals Group ties up with the
Republic of Macedonia, to expand healthcare services in the Southeastern
European nation.
ii. It also establishes efforts to provide
telemedicine, educational opportunities and training over the next five years
for Macedonia, it added.
3. Veteran CPI
leader Govind Pansare died
i.
Veteran leader of Communist Party of India (CPI), Govind Pansare was shot along
with his wife Uma by unidentified persons near his house in Kolhapur. He was 82
ii. He
passed away at Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai. He was 82
iii.
He was leading a campaign against the collection of toll in Maharashtra
4. Tapan Misra appointed as Chief of ISRO’s
Space Application Centre
i. Veteran scientist
Tapan Misra was appointed as the Chief
of ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) at Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
ii. He replaced AS Kiran
Kumar, who was appointed as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization.
iii. Earlier
he was working as a Deputy Director of Microwave Remote Sensing Area in SAC.
5. Sushil Kumar to
promote sports in Delhi
i. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) roped Sushil Kumar will
promote sports in Delhi.
ii. As part of the plan, Sushil would also
promote special sports degree programmes.
6. State
Bank of India to finance small tea growers in NE
i. State Bank of India(SBI) will provide finance Rs 100 crore benefiting
3,000 small tea growers in the North East soon, a senior official of the public
sector bank said today.
ii. Finance
will be provided to tea growers who have proper basic documents of their
existing garden as per Tea Board of India norms.
iii. “The
benefit is not only for Assam, but also for new tea garden growing states such
as Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya which will also be covered under a
similar scheme.
7. ICC World Cup Cricket: West Indies beat
Pakistan by 150 runs
i. West Indies
crushed Pakistan by 150 runs in a Pool B game played at Christchurch in ICC
Cricket World Cup 2015.
ii. This is the first win of the
West Indies team in 2015 World Cup.
iii. Pakistan won the toss and asked West Indies
to bat first, Caribbean team constructed a formidable total of 310 on the board
in 50 overs.
iv. Chasing a total of 300 + Pakistan had worst
starts as his four batsmen went back to the pavilion in just one run.
v. Jerome Taylor was the cause as he removed
top three batsman in his first 2 overs.
vi. Pakistan team scored only 160 runs in 39
overs.
vii. Man of the Match Andre Russell starred with
both bat and ball, and was adjudged man of the match for his performance.
