1. 
First PM of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew passed away

i. First Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan, also known as the founding father of Singapore passed away on Monday at the age of 91.

ii. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has declared a period of National Mourning from March 23 to 29. He was a member of parliament until his death.

iii. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that Lee Kuan Yew helped Singapore to transition from a developing country to one of the most developed in the world, transforming it into a thriving international business hub.

iv. He was the Prime Minister of Singapore from 1959 when Singapore gained full self – government from British, until 1990 when he stepped down.  

2. Nation pays homage to Bhagat Singh on martyrdom day

i. Today is the martyrdom day of one of the most prominent revolutionary of freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh.

ii. In April 1929, with Batukeshwar Dutt, he undertook the revolutionary task to throw two bombs and leaflets inside the Central Legislative Assembly while shouting slogans of Inquilab Zindabad.

iii. At the age of 23, he was convicted in Saunders case and was hanged on March 23, 1931, along with Sukhdev and Rajguru.

3. Indian ecologist, Madhav Gadgil selected for 2015 Tyler Prize

i. Renowned ecologist Madhav Gadgil has been selected for the prestigious 2015 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.

ii. He will share the $200,000 cash prize with noted American marine ecologist Dr. Jane Lubchenco.

iii. The both have been selected for their work in changing policy and specifically for their “leadership and engagement in the development of conservation and sustainability policies in the United States, India and internationally”.

iv. The prize, instituted in 1973, is awarded by the international Tyler Prize Executive Committee with the administrative support of the University of Southern California.

4. Rajendra Singh selected for the 2015 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate

i. Rajendra Singh known as the Waterman of India has been selected for the 2015 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate.

ii. He was selected for his innovative water restoration efforts, improving water security in rural India, and for showing extraordinary courage and determination in his quest to improve the living conditions for those most in need.

iii. Singh has invested several decades of his life to defeat drought and empowering communities of Rajasthan through his organisation Tarun Bharat Sangh (India Youth Association).

iv. The Stockholm Water Prize is a global award founded in 1991 and presented annually by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to an individual, organisation or institution for outstanding water-related achievements.

5. National Media and Advertising Awards announced

i. The sixth edition of the National Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity  announced in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

ii. Lata Mangeshkar won the Laadli Voice of the Century award and Queen movie won the Best Movie in the event.

iii. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was the chief guest at the awards ceremony.

6. Shahir Krishnarao Sable, Marathi Folk legend passed away

i. Shahir Krishnarao Sable, the Marathi folk legend passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was 92.

ii. He was a proficient singer, writer, playwright, performer, Loknatya (Folk Theater) producer-director.

iii. He was the person who brought Maharashtra’s folk singing and theatre traditions to the centre stage and his songs enriched Maharashtra’s culture.

7. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme launched by Govt.

i. The government of India has launched the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) with an outlay of 1500 crore rupees, which will be implemented by the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

ii. The scheme aims to impart skill training to youth with focus on first time entrants to the labour market and class 10 and class 12 drop outs.

iii. The scheme will cover 24 lakh persons and skill training would be based on the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) and industry led standards.

8. 33% women reservation in police forces of all Union Territories: Govt.

i. The government of India has approved 33 percent reservation for women in police forces of all Union territories (UTs) including Delhi police, through direct recruitment in non-gazetted posts like constables to sub-inspectors.

ii. The reservation will also cover reserved categories like SCs, STs and OBCs.

iii. The reservation would apply to all existing vacancies in police forces of the UTs and any vacancy arising later.

9. World Water Day observed on 22th March

i. World Water Day observed on 22th March 2015 globally the theme Water and Sustainable Development. ii. The day is celebrated every year to make a difference for the members of the global population who suffer from water related issues.

iii. It’s a day to prepare for how we manage water in the future.

iv. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day. This day was formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

10. Djokovic wins Indian Wells Open Tennis Men’s Singles

i. Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer to won the Indian Wells Open Tennis Men’s Singles title.

ii. He defeated Federer by 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-2.

11. Simona Halep won the Indian Wells Open Tennis Women’s Singles title

i. Simona Halep of Romania defeated Jelena Jankovic of Serbia to win her maiden Indian Wells Open Tennis Singles title.

ii. Halep won the title beating the Serbian player 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

iii. Halep had also won Shenzhen Open and Dubai Open in 2015.

12. Sania-Martina wins Indian Wells Open

i. Sania Mirza and Swiss legend Martina Hingis have won the Indian Wells Open title by defeating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina  by 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

ii. It was Sania’s 24th career title, and the second doubles trophy this year

13. Sania ranked number three in doubles

i. Sania Mirza with 6885 points ranked to umber three in the doubles Tennis ranking.

ii. She followed Italians Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani, who share the top spot with 7640 points each.

iii. Courtesy her win at the Indian Wells, Sania earned 1000 points and gained two places on the WTA chart. She had reached the final of the same tournament last year with Cara Black.
