1. Nigeria no longer a polio-endemic country
(i)
Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed Nigeria from the list of
polio-endemic countries. This has been acknowledged as a historic achievement for Africa’s
most populous country.
(ii) As per the WHO’s statement, “This is the first time Nigeria has interrupted transmission of
wild (naturally occurring) poliovirus, bringing the country and the African region closer than
ever to being certified polio-free.” This leaves only Pakistan and Afghanistan
on the list.
2. UN General Assembly
adopts new sustainable development goals
(i) In September 2015, the 193-member UN General Assembly formally adopted a new framework of goals – Transforming Our World: The 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development, which comprises 17 goals and 169 targets to
eliminate poverty, inequality and tackle climate change.
(ii) These goals broadly include economic growth,
social inclusion and environmental protection.
3. G4 nations rally for
permanent UNSC seat
(i) On September 26, PM Narendra Modi
hosted a high-powered summit in new York,with G4 member leaders
namely – German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Japanese
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
(ii)
The four countries pushed for reforms in the United Nations Security Council
(UNSC), reiterating that they are legitimate candidates for permanent membership
in an expanded and reformed council.
(iii)
The UNSC is a
powerful world body that is responsible for international peacekeeping and bringing about changes in the UN charter.
4. Andhra Pradesh to get Rs.1000 crore from the govt.
(i) the government announced that it will provide a special assistance
of Rs.1000 crore during FY15-16 for the overall development of Andhra Pradesh.
(ii) Parts
of the fund will be utilised for development of backward districts and creation of the
state’s new capital, including the Raj Bhawan, the High Court, the Secretariat, the
Legislative Assembly, the Legislative Council, and other fundamental infrastructure.
5. Virbhadra Singh is the first serving CM to undergo CBI raid
(i) On September 26, the CBI
raided the residences of Himachal Pradesh’s serving Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in the case
of disproportionate assets.
(ii) He is already under the Income Tax Department’s scanner. The CBI carried out searches at 11 places –
including Singh’s residences in Shimla and Delhi, among others.
(iii) Some oppositions leaders criticised the raid as a vindictive act as it clashed with the day
when Singh’s daughter, Minakshi Singh’s was getting married.
6. India’s Mars Mission
completes one year
(i) On September 24, 2015, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission successfully completed one year.
The Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) released the Mars Atlas on the day
to mark the mission as the Orbiter is expected to last many years.
(ii) Mars Atlas contains images clicked by the Mars Colour Camera (one of the five scientific
payloads installed in the spacecraft) and the results obtained by other payloads.
(iii) The organisation will also publish a book on November 5th this year titled- ‘Fishing
Hamlet to Mars’.
7. Indian Origin girl wins White House’s Champions of Change award
(i)
A 15-year-old Indian-American girl Swetha Prabakaran received the
White House’s prestigious Champions of Change award for her efforts to empower the
community by teaching Internet coding through her NGO.
(ii)
Named Everybody Code Now!,
the NGO founded by Swetha works to endow the youth with knowledge and encourage
them to become engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs.
8.
NCC included in the Limca Book of Records for largest yoga performance
(i) In September 2015, National Cadet Corps (NCC) was presented with the certificate of
Limca Book of Records for the largest yoga performance.
(ii) The record was made
International Yoga Day when NCC members simultaneously performed at multiple

Sania- Martina win the women doubles title at Guangzhou Open
(i) On September 26, 2015, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis lifted the women’s doubles title at
Guangzhou Open.
(ii) The Indo-Swiss pair achieved a 6-3, 6-1 win against the Chinese pair of
Shilin Xu – Xiaodi You. This is Mirza’s seventh title of the season and sixth win with Martina
Hingis.
(iii) This is Mirza’s seventh title of the season and sixth win with Martina Hingis.
