1. SC rejects plea seeking Jat quota in medical, dental PG courses
i. The Supreme Court dismissed a plea of Jat students seeking benefits of reservation under Other Backward Class in the ongoing process of admission in post-graduate medical and dental courses.
ii. A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman said the issue has already been decided and there was no vested right in favour of Jat students.
iii. The apex court on March 17 had set aside the erstwhile UPA government’s notification to include Jats in the central list of OBCs to accord quota benefits to them.
2. NABARD sanctions loan of Rs 112.60 cr to Haryana
i. NABARD has sanctioned a loan of Rs 112.60 crore to the Haryana Government under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).
ii. The loan was granted to Haryana by NABARD for construction of College of Dairy Science and Technology under Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinarty and Animal Sciences in Hisar district.
iii. The project is aimed at giving impetus to animal husbandry sector. Every year around 250 students will pass out of the college with B Tech in Dairy Technology.
3. Aahar’ scheme for urban poor launched in Odisha
i. The Odisha government today launched the ‘Aahar’ cheap meal scheme for providing subsidised food to urban poor.
ii. The subsidised meals for people visiting urban areas for various works would be provided at four crowded places each in these five cities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to about 25,000 people per day to begin with.
iii. The Aahar scheme is being sponsored by Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) in Rourkela and Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) in Sambalpur. Tata Steel is supporting the scheme in Berhampur, official sources added.
4. Muhammadu Buhari won Nigeria presidential election
i. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress won the Nigeria presidential election today.
ii. He has become the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria.
iii. The former military ruler in a victory speech today described his win as historic. He said that the vote had vindicated the people’s belief in democracy.
5. Japan ties with India in security, defence
i. Japan has sought enhanced co-operation with India in defence and security sector including in the field of maritime security.
ii. Defence Minister of India Manohar Parrikar, is on official visit to Japan, held talks with country’s Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo yesterday.
iii. He said, Japan would like to further strengthen economic co-operation with India and jointly work to enhance regional connectivity.
6. ICC President AHM Mustafa Kamal quit
i. AHM Mustafa Kamal President of International Cricket Council has resigned from his post today.
ii. He gave his resignation after the controversy that he was not allowed to hand over the World Cup trophy to the winning team as per the standard practice after the finals on 29th March.
iii. The trophy was handed over to the winning team by ICC Chairman N. Srinivasan breaching standard practice.
iv. Kamal made controversial remarks on the poor quality of umpiring during the India-Bangladesh Quarter Finals match on 19th March, due to which he was denied the responsibility of handing over the trophy as ICC President.
7. Daniel Vettori announced retirement from int’l cricket
i. New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori has announced his retirement from international cricket.
ii. He gave his confirmation to the rumours that the World Cup Final against Australia, which the Kiwis lost by 7 wickets, was his last international match.
iii. He already takes retirement from Tests and Twenty-20s in 2011, ends his international career as New Zealand’s most capped test and one-day player.
iv. He made his international debut as an 18-year-old, led the side following the retirement of Stephen Fleming in 2008 until after the 2011 World Cup.
8. Daikin India signs up as team sponsor for Delhi Daredevils
i. Japanese air conditioner maker Daikin India has signed up with IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils as team sponsor.
ii. Kanwaljeet Jawa, Managing Director, Daikin India, said this is a part of the company’s strategy to reach out to more consumers, especially in smaller cities using association with IPL this summer.
9. Kings XI Punjab & Blippar joins hands for IPL8
i. Kings XI Punjab has announced its partnership with image recognition and augmented reality platform, Blippar.
ii. It said that the collaboration for IPL Season 8 will provide fans an opportunity to book tickets and buy merchandise online via their smart phones.
10. Operation
Raahat to evacuate Indian nationals from Yemen
i. India launched Operation Raahat to evacuate
4000 Indian nationals from Yemen.
ii. The operation started after India got
permission to dock its offshore patrol vessel INS Sumitra at the Aden harbor of
Yemen.
iii. In the evacuation exercise, 350 Indian
nationals were evacuated from Aden to Djibouti by INS Sumitra. The nationals
will be flown to India in two Air Force C-17 Globemasters.
