1. World Cancer
day being observed today
i. World Cancer day is being observed today in order to
raise awareness about the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer.
ii. The theme for this year is “Not beyond us”, which highlights
the fact that there are many practical things that can be done by individuals
and by communities to reduce the burden of cancer.
iii. Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP
Nadda called upon people to join hands in fighting the deadly disease by
creating mass awareness.
iv. The 2015 campaign will focus on
four key areas:
Choosing
healthy lives
Delivering
early detection
Achieving
treatment for all
Maximising
quality of life
2. Bihar to
provide free education till Post Graduation to SC, ST and girl students
i. The Bihar government today decided to provide
free education to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and girl students
till Post Graduation (PG) level in the state.
ii. The decision, taken at a meeting of the
state cabinet, said that no fee would be taken from SC/ST and girl students at
the time of admission in government universities and colleges in Bihar.
iii. The government would reimburse the financial
loss to such universities/colleges after gathering information about
it.
3. PM greets
Sri Lankans on their Independence Day
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today greeted
the people of Sri Lanka on their Independence Day and said he was looking
forward to the visit of President Maithripala Sirisena to India later this
month.
ii. “On their Independence Day, my greetings to
the people of Sri Lanka. The bonds of history, culture & shared values that we
share are unbreakable.My best wishes for the development of Sri Lanka in the
years to come”, said the Prime Minister.
Note:
Sri Lanka’s Independence Day is celebrated on
the 4th of February, in accordance with Lipass/Joshua Louis Law to commemorate its
internal political independence from British rule on that day in 1948.
The day is a national holiday in Sri Lanka.
It is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremony, dances,
parades and performances. Usually, the main celebration takes place in Colombo,
where the President raises the national flag and delivers a nationally
televised speech.
4. India ranked
on Number 3 in Hurun Rich List
i. India has been ranked 3rd in the
Hurun Global Rich List 2015.
ii. The Hurun Global Rich List is a ranking
of the dollar billionaires across the world.
ii. The US and China make up half of the world’s
billionaires. It is the first time that India has broken into the top three,
the report said. India replaced Russia at 3rd position in the list.
iii. India has 97 billionaires, 27 more than last
year. Their combined wealth adds up to $266 billion. Mukesh Ambani (worth $20
billion and ranked 41 on the Hurun List) retains his rank as the richest Indian.
iv. Russia has 93 billionaires and their
combined wealth is $365 billion.
v. The Hurun Global Rich List 2015 ranked 2089
billionaires from 68 countries, up 222 from last year, in a record-breaking
year for the world’s billionaires. The Hurun Global Rich List 2015 is a ranking of
the US dollar billionaires currently found in the world. Wealth calculations
are a snapshot of 17 January 2015. This
is the fourth year that Hurun Report has released a ranking of the dollar
billionaires in the world. The Hurun Global Rich List 2015 is sponsored by
Chinese luxury home builder Star River Property.

1. Bill Gates, 59, retains the number 1 spot
with a fortune of US $ 85 bn.
2. Carlos Slim Helu, 75, regains second
spot with a 38% surge in his fortune to US $ 83 bn.
3. Warren Buffett, 84, saw his wealth shoot
up by US $ 12bn or 19%.
4. Amancio Ortega, 78, is out of the top
three for the first time in three years, after seeing his stake in Zara drop by
US$7bn, due in part to a drop in the Euro.
5. Larry Ellison, 70, with US $ 54 bn, saw his
wealth increase by 13%. Ellison is a signatory of The Giving Pledge, committing
to donate more than half his wealth to philanthropic causes.
Note: Mark Zuckerberg, at 30, the youngest member
of the Top 10, has had a great year. His wealth soared 42%, moving him up 11
places to rank 7.

Prasad appointed Urban Development Secretary
i. Madhusudhan Prasad has replaced Shankar Agarwal as Secretary, ministry
of urban development (MoUD).
ii. He was a Director and Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic
Affairs and Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Commerce
iii. He also served as Economic Counsellor in the Indian Embassy in Washington,
USA.
6. Saloni Dalal
becomes youngest player to win a medal in National Games 2015
i. Saloni Dalal became the youngest player to win
the bronze medal in the 200 m breaststroke event in the 35th National
Games 2015.
ii. She is a class 7 student from Karnataka. She
added another medal to her kitty when she won a silver in the 4 X 100 m relay
medley with her teammates Anisha Gaonkar, Malika A Honagekar and Rutuja Pawar.
7. Netball
player Mayuresh Pawar died during the 35th National Games
i. Mayuresh Pawar died due to drowning while taking bath
at Shanghumugham beach in Kerala during the Day 2 of the 35th National Games.
ii. He was a 21-year old netball player of Maharashtra
team.
