National Pollution Day: December 2

  • December 2 is observed as National Pollution Day to spread awareness among people and industries about the need of Pollution Control Acts.
  • The day is observed in memory of the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. Leakage of poisonous chemical Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) and other chemicals  from Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh led to death of around 2259 died immediately and 25000 people died because of the gas-related diseases. 
  • National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) is the main governing body in India which conducts checks on industries to know whether they are following environmental regulations or not.

International

New king carries forward Thailand’s royal dynasty

  • Maha Vajiralongkorn became Thailand’s new king after the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadei.
  • Kings in Thailand have the title of ‘Rama’. The new king became Rama X, the 10th king of the Thailand’s Chakri dynasty. The dynasty was established in 1782. 
  • Bhumibol Adulyadei ruled for 70 years making him one of the longest ruling monarch in the world.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities: December 3

  • The day is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992.
  • The day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of specially-abled persons.
  • Till 2007, it was originally called the International Day of Disabled Persons.
