Faculty@ Amity Lucknow: Key Elements Of Organizational Behaviour

1.As the head of the HR & Organizational Behavior  Dept, please elaborate the necessity to understand human dynamics for any organization

An organization is defined as a group of two or more individuals who work together to accomplish something that typically cannot be accomplished alone. This definition of an organization clearly indicates the importance and necessity to understand the human dynamics.

When more than one individual is present the human dynamics is inevitable. The dynamics is reflected in the functioning of people in accomplishing a task. The level of operational success is said to be determined by the behavior of the members of an organization, and how they all react to each other when brought together.

The knowledge of human dynamics provides crucial tools and practices needed for people to understand and value each other’s unique capabilities, enhance working relationships, grow professionally, and deliver results that involve everyone’s contribution. The understanding of such dynamics is of great help in creating an ecosystem and in enhancing the effectiveness of an organization.

2.What role does Organizational Behavior play in the success of any organization

Organizational behavior relates to the process, rather than the content of conducting managerial work. An essential requirement for entering into, surviving, and succeeding in the modern workplace is to have appropriate skills.

Organizational behavior skills have gained a lot of importance in the modern organizations. Behavioral skills generally refer to interpersonal skills such as motivating others, communicating, leading and adapting to different cultures. Personal Growth through insight into human behavior is another role which OB plays in making the employees grow.

Understanding others leads to personal fulfillment, and can also lead to enhanced self-knowledge and self-insight. Such insight is useful for the purposes as selecting people for jobs and assignments, communicating, and motivating. An important goal of organizational behavior is to improve organizational effectiveness, the extent to which an organization is productive and satisfies the demands of its stakeholders. If a person develops knowledge about subjects such as improved interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and teamwork, he or she will become more effective.

The Organizational Behavior as discipline sharpens and enlarges the domain for common sense. It also refines common sense by challenging you to re-examine generally accepted ideas that may be only partially true.

Because of these important roles played by Organizational Behavior  it is a core subject in almost all management  courses at various Institutes.

Question 3: Why do you need to motivate an employee beyond the monetary benefits he receives for his role in the organization

There is famous research work by Prof. Baldev Sharma about motivation in the Indian organizations. He published a book on this work entitled “Not by Bread Alone”. There is Hawthorne studies by Elton Mayo and   Two Factors Model by Hertzberg. All these suggest that motivation goes beyond monetary benefits. There is limit to monetary incentives but non-monetary incentives have no limits. One has to be creative and innovative to design motivational schemes for his or her team to make each role challenging, rewarding and satisfying.

Question 4: Can you explain how to best measure the performance of an individual?

The measurement of the performance largely depends on performance targets. In most of the organizations very less time is devoted in setting and communicating individual performance targets. The targets should be measurable and should have variables to measure. In my opinion following four aspects should be measured in Individual performance in a given time period against the assigned targets:

i. Quantity  achieved

ii. Quality obtained

iii. Cost incurred

iv. Time consumed

Question 5: Which according to you is a better measure of an employee’s performance: his individual performance or his contribution to a team that performed well?

Definitely contribution to team.  As mentioned earlier the organization is social entity and, therefore, individual excellence needs to be converted into team excellence. The modern organizations require team players. Each member must contribute to team and measures should be evolved to assess individual contribution to team. The pioneer in using bell shaped curve in measuring individual performance is IBM, but recently it has dropped this system and has adopted team assessment. Many other organizations are moving in this direction.
