Amidst recent changes in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) criteria and pattern, the Haryana government has decided to do away with the Diploma Entrance Test (DET) for admission to diploma courses. DET was a written exam conducted by the Haryana State Technical Education Society (HSTES) for admission to three year diploma engineering courses in Haryana. However, from the 2016-2017 academic session, admissions to these courses would be done on merit of the class 10 board exam marks, or the qualifying examination.
KK Kataria, Director Technical Education, Haryana, said, “This change will take off the pressure of entrance tests from engineering aspirants. It will make it easier for students to secure admission and complete a proper education. Discontinuing DET will also mean less monetary burden for parents, as they won’t have to spend huge amounts on coaching classes.”
Today, the number of engineering seats exceeds the number of applicants; so the seats remain vacant. Rajesh Agarwal, Joint Director, HSTES, said, “DET was introduced some 15 years ago, but now there is no need for this test so it is being discontinued.”
