A journey of almost nine years came to an end. Some innovative storytelling coupled with anxiety of love and friendship was the glue that kept us attached to the TV screen for better part of the last decade when HIMYM aired on Monday.
Being a lifelong fan of this show I laughed and cried with the characters, their catchphrases(LEGEN-waitforit-DARY, “Haaaav u met Ted” & many more) & their pyrotechnics of friendship made me sit through all these years. But here comes the bummer, THE SERIES FINALE where episode 23 & 24 of season 9 were merged to stitch together an all time displeasing finale.
First problem is with Character development. Through entire series the writers have gradually showed how TED sacrificed his affection for Robin & the entire season was dedicated to BARNEY-Robin’s wedding. Even there was a stupid scene of Robin flying like a balon to reprimand the allegory of Ted letting go of her. But here we are now, after the death of his wife Tracy, Ted seeking permission to date the same Robin, as the story was not “HOW He met his kids Mother?” but “How he still has feelings for Robin?” wow.He actualy ends up a her doorstep like a creepy old stalker after all that.
Second, Barney Stinson. Although the story was about Ted, the actual pivotal Character in it is HIM. be it Neil Pattrick’s acting or charm , all of us loved this Character more than anyone. The writers made him go from abyss of immaturity & refusing-to-grow-up persona to a caring & responsible person. But in the finale we found him getting separated from Robin & doing everything he was doing in the FIRST episodes, as “some people just dont grow up”.Phew. Why would you build up a character so well, to dump him in the end just for the sake of some cheap thrills. Third, the Mother, Tracy.It turns out she was dead all along & the story was never about how TED MET HER. But she was given so litt;e time, we could not care less.Fourth, Marshall was given only a few lines, just to show he became a judge , Moved to Supreme Court, Running for Senator blah blah. I did not care for Robin as all along she was a Selfish character & whatever she did or happened to her least bothered me.
All in all writers Carter Bayes and co, have dumped all the developments of nine years & brutally contaminated a cute story into a cheap-Stalker-drama. Keeping viewers interested all throughout with a definite storyline & deviating form that in the FINALE just for some CLOSURE & cheap thrill is not something we hoped for. A midst of all this debacle they even announced a spin-off of HOW I MET YOUR DAD!! I will think long and hard before even watch a single episode of it after this Spic Failure.
