IIT Bhubaneshwar in India’s temple city

Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar- ‘Temple City of
India’

IIT Bhubaneswar also known as ‘IITBBS’
is an “engineering and technology” higher education institute.
Founded in 2008, it is located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The Foundation Stone was laid on 12
February 2009, at Arugul, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The campus is spread
over 24 acres. The campus houses classrooms, labs, library, and faculty
offices. The campus is designed to be fully residential. There are separate
residences for boys and girls. There are also recreational facilities, sporting
facilities and shopping arena for basic needs of the students.

IIT Bhubaneswar became the first amongst the eight new IITs to become operational with a sanctioned intake of 40 students each of the disciplines of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and 20 in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. It started off with 120 seats which were later hiked to 180. The plan is to have 10,000 students within 15 years.

Academics at IITBBS

The institute admits students into B. Tech, M. Tech and Ph.D. programs.

The academic year is divided into two semesters, a spring semester and an autumn semester. Between these two regular semesters, the academic year also includes a shorter summer quarter, during which some courses are offered. The institution follows the credit-based system of performance evaluation. Each course is usually worth three credits. The typical course load per semester is 21-24 credits for undergraduate students.

IIT Bhubaneswar is the first IIT to set up a separate marine campus in 2011 for conducting research in rising sea levels, ecology, disaster management, marine ecosystems, fishery development, and other areas. This campus, part of the School of Earth, Ocean and Environment Sciences, is set up near Chilka Lake. It will have educational facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
