The Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar
The Indian
Institute of Technology, Ropar (IIT
Ropar), also known to as Indian Institute of Technology Punjab (IIT Punjab), is an engineering and technology higher education
institute located in Rupnagar, Punjab, India. This
new institute was established by MHRD in year 2008. The classes for academic
session 2008-2009 were held at IIT
Delhi. The Institute started functioning from its
transit campus in Rupnagar in August 2009.
The temporary campus of IIT Ropar is former
Women’s Polytechnic, Rupnagar. The transit campus is equipped with state of art
lecture halls and playgrounds for sports. Advanced laboratories have been set
up to help students gain practical insight into the courses that are a part of
their curriculum. The current temporary campus is a brief 1 km walk from
Rupnagar railway station. The Institute campus houses four hostels: three for
boys and one for girls. The hostels are capable of accommodating 380
students.
The Government of Punjab has approved about 525
acres (2.12 sq.km) land for the permanent campus in Rupnagar. The location
for permanent campus of IIT Ropar is Birla Seed Farms on the banks of the river
Sutlej. The Foundation stone for the permanent campus of IIT Ropar was laid
down on 24 February 2009.

Programs at IIT Ropar
Two virtual
classrooms have been set up at IIT Ropar. The National Knowledge Network interconnects
IIT Ropar with institutions engaged in research, higher education and
scientific development in the country.

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program was
set up in May 2013 but no degree is offered yet. The BME Program will be
slowly converted into a Bioengineering department so that it can recruit its
own faculty members and have its own academic programs such as B.Tech., M.Tech.
and Ph.D.
Extra-curricular activities
Zeitgeist is the cultural and technology festival at
IIT Ropar. Various hobby clubs exist on campus:
The Fine Arts Club,
The Music Society, The Dance Club, LitSoc- The Literary Society, The Chess
Club, The Athletics Club, The Creative Writing Club, Science and Technology
Club. The Music Society provides students the opportunity to perform and brings
live music to events during the academic year.
