IITG’s Design Department caters to students with artistic taste

IITGs

The design course at IIT Guwahati (IITG) leaves many people wondering how can this stream be taught at the premier engineering institute? What is the use of a B.Des degree and that too from an IIT? What prospects does it hold for a student? Questions like these and much more trouble young minds while they prepare to take one of the most important decisions of their academic life. It is necessary that more people get a picture of this branch so they can make an informed career choice.

The Department of Design, popularly known as DoD, is one of the thirteen departments at IIT-G. It was established to kindle some of the best technical minds in the country, with a passion for innovation in technology, and driven by a firm understanding, appreciation, and celebration of design.

DoD focuses on the study, invention, and creative use of technologies to create powerful experiences through interdisciplinary research in engineering, and design, and to understand the impact of technology on individuals, groups, and organizations. The Department was established in 1998, and it envisions to produce successful graduates who will be capable of leading the changing scenarios of today and tomorrow through thought, innovation, and values.

The design students have to face numerous questions from their engineering counterparts as to what keeps them busy throughout the year. As an answer to this perennial question, the Department started an exhibition of the work done by their sophomore batch, which as expected, was a huge success. Buoyed by its success, the Department organizes an exhibition Prayukti every year to showcase the creativity of its students.

This year, Prayukti was organized on April 28, 2016, in the Exhibition Hall, Design Department of IIT-G.

Unlike the previous editions, the theme for this year’s exhibition was open ended. Exhibits included graphic design as well as physical model making works, and work on elements of form. Making of chairs was the main attraction along with work on augmented reality.

Although Design is not a core branch, but it has attracted students who have a knack for creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. The department also boasts of a cent percent placement and its former students have bagged plum packages.
