Aspirants of IOCL Recruitment exam who are asking : Does anyone here has an understanding of the exact work of marketing officer? Is it same as sales officer? Maybe someone who knows a marketing officer can answer this. When asking about it can you get data like work timings, schedule, locations, in hand salary etc
(Sharing my answer for wider forum)
Marketing Officer is an Officer posted in Marketing Division of IOC (other divisions are Refinery, Pipelines, R&D, Corporate (Business Devpt, Petrochemicals)). In marketing division, you may get posted into Sales or Operations or Engineering.
Sales Officers handle sales in a field area (around 2-3 districts) for either of LPG or lubricants. Or you might be managing channel sales through petrol pumps (60-70 pumps) or sales to industries/mines/road projects, etc .
Operations Officer work in Oil Depots/terminals or LPG Bottling Plant or Lube Blending Plants handling Planning, Supplies, Maintenance, Safety, Ship Operations, etc
Engineering Officers handle new Projects, contracts, vendor mgmt, etc.
Generally speaking, in life in sales is hectic (more so in Retail sales). Other than retail, work-life balance is there. However, Retail is where you can get best personal carer growth and be a fast tracker in promotions. However in other depts also, when work pressure is there, you may have to work extended timings. Overall, the company takes care (esp medical benefits to dependents is really good. Once you join IOC, even after retirement till end, medical is taken care of). Also, overall company takes care. This is my personal opinion. Others may have differing views.
Overall, different organizations have their own pros and cons.
On balance, would say, IOC is a good company if you want to settle and come for long run. Initially, postings can be at places away from hometown (though now they are giving same state or neighouring states). Still, the challenges and scope of work you get at entry level is not given by any other company. In sales, you get to handle sales which is mre than a medium scale enterprise…
