JEE Advanced 2017 to be held on May 21; IITs to take in 500 more students

The JEE Advanced 2017, conducted by IIT Madras, will be held on May 21, 2017. The date for the exam was confirmed in a meeting conducted yesterday, September 18, in Chennai. The meeting was attended by chairmen of JEE (A) from across IITs. Further, in accordance with an earlier directive from MHRD Head, Prakash Javadekar, the IIT Council has also planned to increase intake of students across most IITs. A chairman who attended the meeting told PaGaLGuY, “The MHRD is starting new IITs every year. It is natural that the intake of students will increase. Subsequently, the eligibility bar for JEE Advanced will also reduce. As of now, candidates in the top 80% in their XIIth board exams will be eligible for JEE Advanced.” The IIT Council is eyeing an approximate increase of 500-1000 seats across IITs for the academic year 2017-18.

Prof Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay told PaGaLGuY, “The HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar, has asked IITs to enroll as many students the institute is capable of, based on their academic facilities.”

Earlier in August, PaGaLGuY had reported about an IIT Council meeting with MHRD Head, Prakash Javadekar to increase the total number of students in IITs by 30,000 by the year 2020. (Read here). This means, every year, a few hundred or thousand seats will be increased. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, says, “There is a formula to decide how many seats will be increased each year to achieve the 30,000 target by 2020. As of now, there is no confirmed number for how many seats will be increased next year.”
