More whoa-ness from the B-school Shutterbug Photo Contest 2010 runners-up

More

Apart from the ten photographs that won prizes in the PaGaLGuY B-school Shutterbug Photo Contest 2010, a few more caught the judges’ fancies and then some stood out to us folks at the PaGaLGuY HQ.

Here is a runners-up gallery of the contest, with some photographs having comments by Soumitra Ghosh (Photo Editor – Special Features at the Hindustan Times), who co-judged the contest.

We start with a few shots that made it to the judges’ initial shortlist but not the final

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta – by Arindam

Soumitra Ghosh (Photo Editor – Special Features, Hindustan Times): Was so difficult to keep it out of the first ten. Very nice shot.

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta – by Gururaj Nayak

Soumitra Ghosh: Well composed but the colours have become loud and the sky has gotten washed out. In case Photoshop was involved, its use for color saturation has been excessive.

TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal – by Berty J Thomas

Soumitra Ghosh: When shooting silhouettes, body language becomes important. This picture could have used some dramatic body language.

Indian School of Business, Hyderabad – by Gaurav Sajjanhar

Soumitra Ghosh: The photograph is well-composed. Although there is life in the photograph, yet it lacks that edge.

Two good architectural shots that made it to the judges’ initial shortlist. But according to Soumitra Ghosh, both could have been vastly improved by including with some life forms in them.

Indian School of Business, Hyderabad – by Anish Jain

Soumitra Ghosh: Good composition, but what is architecture without human presence.

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad – by Sanjay

Soumitra Ghosh: The photographer should have waited for some life form to appear in the frame. That would have completed this photograph.

As the photographs started pouring in during the contest period, each email with an entry made for interesting conversations inside the PaGaLGuY HQ. Up next are a few pictures that the folks at PaGaLGuY HQ found especially interesting

Indian School of Business, Hyderabad – by Gaurav Sajjanhar

What a beautiful sunset. We especially liked how the slight hint of bluish-green shades towards the upper-right added a sense of calm to the photograph.

Indian Institute of Management, Indore – by Rakesh Thykandy

Speaking of sunsets, here’s another good one, with swirling clouds for added effect.

Institute of Rural Management, Anand – by Tarun Chawla

Even though the photograph has a moving object, the general sense of stillness and melancholy makes for an endearing shot.

Indian Institute of Management, Indore – by Arnav Mukherjee

The gate like structure creates a nice frame to accentuate the water-tank and the columns at the top lead the eye towards the subject. The photograph makes a mundane water-tank look like a very interesting building.

Xavier’s Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur – by Ayush Shukla

Nice portrayal of institute pride. The men on the terrace have victory in their body language, adding drama to the picture.

The next two pictures did not really have an element of ‘b-school’ in them, but were great shots nevertheless

Shot by Siddharth Garg – Institute of Management Technology, Nagpur

What timing!

Shot by Shaunak Mukherjee – Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad

A wonderful take on the famous Afghan Girl photograph, and with the right choice of subject.

We will continue showcasing the remaining pictures from time to time in various PaGaLGuY news stories. Meanwhile, you can check albums one and two for the full photo gallery of contest entries.

Whoa, what a contest it was! A big thank you to the participants and the judges. We can’t wait to do this again next year!
