NITD students to go on hunger strike to protest student’s death

Students have been protesting the death of Prosenjit Sarkar, a fourth
year student at National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (NITD) since November 19. They have decided
to go on an indefinite hunger strike to get the administration to meet their
demands. Their immediate demand is that the probe into allegation of medical
negligence, which caused the death, be completed at the earliest. Students have
also demanded resignation of the director, Dr. Tarkeshwar Kumar.

Students have alleged mismanagement on part of the director
in conducting administrative affairs at NITD. An open letter has been uploaded
by the students, detailing the circumstances that led to the incident, as well as
the allegations leveled against the director, on various social media platforms.
Copies of these documents have also been submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD) officials who visited the campus early this week. PaGaLGuY
has access to the submitted documents, but is not publishing them as it is
unable to independently verify the allegations listed in there. The students
have pinned their hopes on the report to be submitted by the MHRD officials and
the police investigation into Prosenjit’s death.
