Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio wins his first Academy Award

The who’s who of international cinema took their hats off for some of the best films of 2015 at the 88th Academy Awards which was conducted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). 

The Oscar, as the award is commonly known as, was presented across 24 categories. The award ceremony was hosted by actor and comedian Chris Rock, who had earlier hosted the 77th Academy Awards in 2005.

Given below is a list of this year’s winners across categories:

General Facts:

1. ‘The Revenant’ received a total of 12 nominations, the highest number this year. With 10 nominations across categories, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ was placed second in this respect.  

2. This is the second consecutive year that a film directed by Mexican director Alejandro G. Iárritu received the most number of nominations. 

3. With six awards across categories, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ became the film that bagged the most number of Oscars this year. 

4. Spike Lee and Gena Rowlands received the Academy’s Honorary Awards. Also, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was conferred on Debbie Reynolds.

5. Indo-British director Asif Kapadia’s documentary called ‘Amy’ on late singer Amy Winehouse received the Oscar in the Best Documentary – Feature category.

6. The documentary ‘A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness’ received the Oscar in the Best Documentary – Short Subject category. Directed by Pakistani journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film talks about honour killings in Pakistan.

7. India sent Marathi film ‘Court’ (directed by Chaitanya Tamhane) in the Best Foreign Film category. However, the film was not nominated. Earlier, it had received many accolades, including the Best Feature Film title in 62nd National Film awards.
