An incident of ragging of a first engineering year student rocked the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTU-H) today (November 30) after Raghvendra, a student from the civil engineering department filed a complaint against two seniors.
The student alleged that two boys named Sai Surya Teja and Nirbhay forced him to write record books on late Monday evening and stripped him in his hostel room. N Bujanga Rao, assistant commissioner of police of KPHB police station said, “After the victim refused to write the record books, the seniors allegedly manhandling him and stripped him in his hostel room. We have filed a complaint against the seniors under the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act and will inquire into the matter.”
Raghvendra, a native of Vanaparthy district in Telangana, has been studying in university for the last six months. The victim told the police that his seniors beat him up in the Kinnera Boys hostel and subjected him to ragging.
As the news spread on campus, members of various students organisation held a protest in front of the JNTU College of Engineering as they demanded the university take action against the seniors. T Surender, a student activist said, “It is ridiculous that ragging is being encouraged in university hostels. The university needs to have mechanism in place to avoid such incidences. The administration must immediately suspend the two seniors if the allegations are true.”
Following protests on campus, the university has constituted a high-level committee to probe the matter. N Yadaiah, registrar of JNTU-H said, “We will be examining the CCTV footage and enquire into what exactly happened. The committee consists of various senior-level officials from the university and is headed by the JNTU College of Engineering principal. We will be submitting a report to the police by Thursday morning after inquiring about all the facts.”
