“You have got decent percentage….you must go for science” was the remark of one of my relatives when the boards results were out. At that age we are supposed to take the decision which, according to many, can make or break our career. We haven’t met many people who have succeeded in life after treading this course but have heard many stories (sometimes imaginary also) about people who kissed sky after opting for this branch .Then owing to the combined effect of pressure and the wild imaginations which we have been driven into, we opt for something which we have very less and sometimes no idea at all .Yes we have participated in the rat race for the first time in life. Perhaps we do not know this and nor the fact that this is just the beginning of hoards of rat races which are to follow. Having participated in one, we are next informed about another rat race i.e. engineering. Then we start striving for that, some get through in once & some give several attempts since the only fodder provided to our thoughts of being successful is engineering. The ones who get decent enough college start aspiring for a good package & plush life. After 4 yrs (doesn’t matter however they were spent) we are happy to achieve the coveted title ‘ENGINEER’. Story doesn’t end here. We join a company and feel very good being in a new environment and take a feel of the ‘title’ what we have been studying years for. Very enthusiastic about the work, completing every work as early as possible, being nice to everyone to leave a lasting impact, getting to know people …initial year is rocking in every sense. If we are unfortunate enough, we become the victim of office politics. Despite having worked hard,we are deliberately entangled into it.Result…we are not appreciated for the work and that’s what is reflected in the annual appraisal also. Notwithstanding this, we continue to trace the path of learning. However,with the passage of time we get to realize that
1) Buttering up and not hard work will help to rise up the corporate ladder (obviously not applicable for all the companies)
2) Being in the society, as it is, it doesn’t matter whether we possess grey matter in our head or not, as far as we have deep pockets with luxe car.
3) Remaining in this field will mean growing at snail’s pace.
This is when the bell in our head start making noise.”I deserve better than this……Will continuing this make me happy?…….Whatever i need to do i got to do it now”.And then the famous preconceived notion instilled in our mind by the society at large that more money means more happiness…… a collaboration of all these gets us thinking and given the limited opportunities in India for a “lucrative” career,we end up going for MBA. Welcome to another rat race!!!
