SBI PO 2015 GK Update: Nabard’s Rs.30000 crore credit to farmers for irrigation

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard)
plans to provide farmers credit to the tune of Rs.30000 crore in the next three
years. The aim is to make irrigation an efficient process.

While Rs.1000 crore has already been authorised, Nabard’s
chairman and managing director Harsh Kumar Bhanawala has said that Rs.10000 is
the target for this fiscal year.

This funding will be in addition to the Rs.50000 crore loan
that will be lent to farmers in the next five years under the Pradhan Mantri
Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY).

Nabard gets GCF
accreditation

Green Clmaite Fund (GCF), created within the UNFCCC’s
framework, is a mechanism to reallocate funds from the developed to the emerging
countries to assist the latter in their efforts to curb effects of climate
change.

It has nominated Nabard as the national implementation
agency for climate change at the rural level.

The goal is to create a GCF with a commitment of generating $100
billion as against the present commitment of around $10 billion.

While 20 financial establishments like World Bank, Asian
Development Bank, etc. have been shortlisted, Nabard is the only bank chosen from
the whole of South Asia. The entities have been shortlisted for qualities like
better procurement facilities, sensitivity to gender issues and transparent mechanism.

Other initiatives of Nabard

a) * In April this year, the agri-bank launched an initiative in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu to enable farmers to adopt new technologies with help from research institutions.

* Veterinary University Training and Research Institute, Tirupur, is the ‘technology provider’. Groups of farmers involved in cattle rearing/dairy activities, rearing of sheep/goat, and country fowl will be trained on latest farming technologies, apart from being taken on exposure visits to progressive farms .

b) * In May, Nabard announced of its plans to sponsor skill training. It would fund training programmes organised by the South Canara District Central Cooperative (SCDCC) Bank.
