Second suicide in a week, engineering student from DYPSoE, Pune ends life
Another engineering student from Maharashtra committed suicide, making the death toll to 2 this week. Pratik Ashok Patil (20), a first year Mechanical Engineering student at D.Y. Patil School of Engineering, Pune (DYPSoE), allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room in the institute’s campus.
The incident came to light on Tuesday, February 16 morning, when a fellow student found his body hanging inside the bathroom of the hostel room. Senior police inspector at Dighi Police Station, Navnath Ghogare, told PaGaLGuY, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that Patil did not leave any note in the hostel room. He had failed in five out of six subjects in his first-semester exams, after which he was in a state of distraught. We suspect this to be the primary reason for his suicide.”
Patil, who is from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, came to Pune in 2015 after he sought admission in DYPSoE. Dr S.S. Sonavane, Principal of DYPSoE, said, “To prevent such an unfortunate incident in future, we are stressing on the need to establish a counselling cell in our campus. We have collaborated with local psychiatrists and have commenced counselling sessions for students as well as faculty members.”
Ghogare further added, “Patil’s friends had seen him go to the washroom early on Tuesday. When his friends realised that he had been gone too long and wasn’t responding to phone calls, they broke open his hostel room door. Patil had used a bedsheet to hang himself from the bathroom grille.”
This is the second suicide incident this week, after an engineering student, Rohith Jadhav from Sinhgad Institute of Technology, Lonavla committed suicide on Sunday, February 14.
