The Engineering Services helps manage the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India in sectors such as Railways, Telecommunication, Power, Public works, roads, defence, manufacturing, inspection, supply, construction, etc. Due to the prestige associated with this service, the Engineering Services Examination is a popular choice for engineering graduates, making this examination one of the most competitive in India.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the central agency in India responsible for recruitment to the All India Services and Central Services – Group A and Group B. Thus, the Engineering Services Examination is conducted by the UPSC.
This article will give you all of the necessary information about the Eligibility, Scheme of Examination and important dates for this exam.
Eligibility:
A candidate applying for the Engineering Services Examination should fulfil these criteria:
Educational Qualification
A Bachelors degree in Engineering from a recognised university or equivalent is a must for this exam. An M. Sc. degree or its equivalent, with Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects, is also acceptable for certain services/posts only.
Candidates appearing for their engineering degree or equivalent examination are also eligible.
Age Limit:
Minimum age limit: 21 years
Maximum age limit: Open category – 30 years, OBC – 33 years, SC/ST candidates – 35 years.
No. of Attempts: General category candidates are permitted four attempts in this exam while OBC candidates get up to seven attempts. SC/ST candidates have no restriction on the number of attempts.
Scheme of Engineering Services Examination:
UPSC conducts the Engineering Services Examination once a year in two successive steps over a period of three days.
Paper I (Objective type test) : General Ability Test, 200 Marks, Two hours
Part A: General English (60 questions, 100 marks)
Part B: General Studies (60 questions, 100 marks)
Paper II & III (Objective type Test) : 200 Marks each, Two hours each
Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Electronics & Tele-Communication Engineering
NOTE: In objective papers, for every wrong answer one-third of the marks allotted to the question will be deducted.
Paper IV & V (Conventional essay type Test): 200 Marks each, Two hours each
Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Electronics & Tele-communication Engineering.
The total marks allotted for the written examination are 1000.
Candidates who clear the cut-off (for the written examination) are called for a Personal Interview (PI) which carries 200 marks. At this stage, candidates are interviewed by a panel of civil servants. After this, the final merit list is declared.
Candidates who make it to the merit list (after the Written Examination and PI) are posted to Group A and Group B services as per the notified vacancies.
