On the whole was very complicated for ppl wih a non economic or trade background...Our batch was decently informed though..ALmost all of us spoke well and I chipped in 4 to 5 times...Some of my bbatchmats said afterwards that I spoke well..I was happy..

8th March 2009

Case Study: 5 min to read, 15 min to discuss and 5 min to write a
summary on the last page of interview form.
Topic: Related to agrarian issue related to allocation of subsidy and
technology outsourcing
Nature of Case study: Descriptive, Almost all points were given.
Response from group: Almost all spoke, but got saturated after 10 - 12
mins. I chipped in with 2 -3 points. Everybody felt that, topic has
nothing to discuss. Very boring GD. Cant judge myself
either...

PI (30 - 35 min)

Before I forget the sequence of questions, lets pen down the
interview: . I was the first one
to be interviewed in my panel.

Panel:
P1: A prof from IIM A
P2: A prof from IIM S

Me: A Poor Chap

() --my thoughts

P3: Have a seat Mr Jog.

aa gayi in such a cozy AC room)

P1: So Adwait, Why you want to join IIM Shillong?

give broader leeway to use my technical expertise as well. ( Fly is on
my face now , now have to use my hand .. 😞 ..
Some more gyan on Why only Shillong...

cycle..investors are not willing to invest and dey banks are not
willing to lend money to them..some body has to break this
cycle..(didnt give exact ending time of this crisis..kisiko bhi nahi

Grad 8.13 NIT Trichy 2005 passout ..chemical Engg

Work Ex 3.5 years with BOC India Ltd ( a core technical company in Cryogenic gas manufacturing field )

Venue -- IISWBM Kolkata (Morning session)
There were 3 panels of 3 profs each. I was in the second panel and we were a batch of 7 people..

GD --- A case study.

We were told that the GD process would take a total of 20mins. 5 min to read the case. 10min to discuss and last 5 min to summarise in a written format.

Mr Chandu Singh was a cleaner in a company and had a driving experience of 15 years He has been loyal to the company and because of his courteous nature popular among people Recently he got a driving license .the officials seeing his diligence in his work decided to promote him as company MDs chauffeur.

He used to do his work meticulously but he has to sometime stretch his work as he was often called even in the wee hours to drop MD or late nights to pick him up.this actually put him under stress. One day similar such incident happened and instead of returning back to office , he returned to home. This was against companys rule as once the vehicle is taken out of the premise of the company has to be returned or informed to concerned authorities. He, due to stress thought shall return back the vehicle the very next day as he knew that other drivers used to do the same and flouted companys rules. But meanwhile he hit a girl child and a case was filed against him by the victims parents .The companys official also came to know about this and started digging out the matter. Though the court exempted him from punishment but the officials took it seriously and reported the matter to MD.

Being the MD what would be your decision.

It was a healthy discussion though started a little abruptly but back on track within one min.I added some points perhaps made 6-7 times entries then we were told to quickly summarise but unfortunately none of us could do that and the sheet was taken back. This happened with almost all the students present in all the three batches.though we re told we ll be given 5 min but in vain

I was the 5th victim to be called in...

m- First of all I hope it doesnt happen , but if it does then I have to make sure that I am there for both of them , for my father my brother in law or my sister maybe there , but for my wife I will be the 1'st person whom she would need at that time, but when she is out of danger, I'll go to my father for sure...

Any other detail:-which you would like to provide

got this from Pooja J.. Its of Kolkata only.. I am posting on her behalf
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The interview was on 10th March at IISWBM, Kolkata...

Reached there around half 8...the process started at dot 9 with the attendance being taken first..soon afterwards we were called out by our respective panel prof for the GD..
Out of a total of 9 candidates in our GD group, 2 were absent...so left with 7...orginally numbered 9, I was the last member....(and how it tested my patience and stamina while waiting for PI... I guess the IIM-S PI has been the longest faced by me...a lil less than disaster too...)

Anyways the GD was a case study...n I'm sure it was repeated...bcoz i had read it somewhere in pagalguy...abt a driver named Chandu Singh...how he worked hard n honestly in company for 15 years and is now the driver for MD...and accidentally kills a gal while he was taking the car to his home after dropping MD (which is a violation of company rules...)...The court has exonerated him for the death of the gal due to lack of evidence but the internal panel of the company found him guilty of breaking company's rule n sugested his dismissal...what should the MD do...

The GD was for 15 min i guess...(see how quick I'm in trying to forget bad experiences 😁 )
Anyways we all discussed few points...nothin much innovative...I can't say I did well..bcoz I took out the point of morality of Chandu Singh which was completely rejected by the rest of the members...other than that pitched in 3-4 times with lil points here n there...fine but not the best GD I have seen...anyways no fish market (because I guess anyone of us hardly had anythin to speak on the topic after first 5 min...)
The moderators were just not stopping us...so a guy from our group (I was the only gal inbetween 6 other guy + 3 male mods) started concluding...jotted down main points...
Then we were given 5 minute to jot down the main points of the discussion...on things that the group agreed as a whole n not just our personal views...seemed like just 2-3 min had passed when we were asked to give back the paper....

Anyways...now comes the intezar part...the PI started immediately and the prof were same as the mods of GD...one was young the other two quiet old...no idea who they were though...
Each interview lasted between 20 min to half hour...so that made my wait last around 3 hours...had a lil chit chat with rest of the people in that...the only points I can mention are...the GD topic was same across all groups and the panels were asking anythin under the sun in PI...right from tech to personal to current issues, to geography...seamless I can say...

Anyways my turn came around half 12...was ushered in by the youngest prof...he was sitting in the middle...the other two on either sides...they were on across the U table, and I was seated on the chair between the U table... (and the slaughter began...)

It started with technical stuff...trust IIM for that (just wondering y I wasn't ever questioned abt techs in IITs...role reversal somethin??)
The youngest prof, P1 lets say...asked me what is TFT...okie, I'm dumb..didn't click at first...but managed later on...till he asked me its construction??? (Hello I'm a CSE student...not ETC one)

Then came programming...asked me the inbuilt function for sorting in C (does it exist??? I don't know...till date all programmings I did..had no such thing...anyways..) then asked me to write the concept of a sorting...I asked which algorithm...and was rebuked...asked the concept of sorting...not algorithm ( ??)

Anyways started explaining how sorting is done n all...was in a way discussing selection sort with him...and then he asked me to write the code for the algorithm...started writing it...he stopped me midway while I had entered the second loop...

And then another bomb on me (just to prove I'm dumb and what not...) asked me about swapping...told him something..and he said swap two numbers using pointers...(I can kick myself...but I was blank that time...and trust me, I know I can find the answer in Google but I've asked this question with 3 more supposed toppers of CS/IT...and all drew blank...but then it was asked to me...not to them..)

And as the prize I got the sarcastic comment, that he isn't from CSE so he has no idea how its done, but me being me should have known...(pehle batate nahi pata hai...kuch bhi likh deti with *s and &s...;)

The one of the elder prof, P2 came in picture...he started asking me about my family...guessed by bro is workin abroad...told him my sis is abroad too...and he started asking me what do they tell me about the situation outside (common they are ages older than me...decades actually...so they don't discuss their works with me...khair...)...told him a lil about recession..this n that...he seemed totally unsatisfied...

Asked about my dad...told him he works in a bank...then asked me ki speak about his bank...(uff...I know its very much expected...par y to me...) anyways..told him for about a minute or two...then he started asking question if its private or not...when were the issues launched...who is this who is that...and the disaster here came when he asked what's the full form of IPO (now seriously...my leg isn't reaching my face...but kick me...)...I drew blank again till he came back sarcastically, Indian Post Office?? (Yeah for sure...why not...)

Ab bhi he wasn't finished...he started asking me about the boom of construction works...'ll they survive the recession n all...gave a lil speech here n there...related it like auto industry...and this that...finally he thought he has dug me in a grave deep enuff and handled me to P3 to bury me...

P3 started with my project (trust me other than IITs and NITs no other coll student actually make projects...and I'm sure prof of IIMs know that...then y pinch me??? 😞 )... grilled me in it, till I gave up...with again the comment...maybe the guide under whom u r doing the project has a better idea than u...else the project is impossible.. (and yes I accept the project is impossible...took too much in hand...)

And then he went to my most dreaded subject...Mathematics...(bas isi ki kami thi ab tak...)..P3 drew some graph...asked me what it was...(something discontinous and in steps...but no idea what...) tried but gave up....and then he drew another graph...guessed it right...he asked me I've made some assumption in guessing it...what were they...(pata nahi...it was a straight away graph of mod value...) ...he then changed the graph a lil...(increased the slope...) and asked what it is now...(it still is a mod graph...with some constant i believe...)...kuch kuch bola...pata nahi if he was satisfied or not....

Anyways...finally...thankfully (bhagwan ko nahi aap prof ko hi...) they were convinced that i'm burried 9 metres down he grave...and asked me to leave...(atleast jaate jaate aur coll k liye all the best keh dete...ek baar lil wali hi sahi smile to kar lete...anyways..)

So with the undisclosed numbers of call made (which i guess are atleast in tunes of 1-2 thousand) and just 60 seats (I won't bother calculating my share of general seats...) I stand absolutely no chance...case dismissed...
Thats it I guess....all the best to the remaining candidates...If u know the world...u r through..else join me...

Seniors,
till now with all the experiences on PG and from my personal contacts,
it seems IIM S is infact having very gruelling PI's.
Gruelling in the sense that anything under the sun is being asked.
Please guide us a bit more on what you people faced last year and how to handle ques you have no idea about?

Seniors,
till now with all the experiences on PG and from my personal contacts,
it seems IIM S is infact having very gruelling PI's.
Gruelling in the sense that anything under the sun is being asked.
Please guide us a bit more on what you people faced last year and how to handle ques you have no idea about?

last year it was similar in nature. whole point here is the interview is exhaustive I would say rather than gruelling. If a person dont know something, it starts becoming grueling for him/her(in their perception). Whatever experiences I have gone through and read mostly people are saying why the hell they r asking me this.

Tell me why they should not ask that.. Mostly the ques r being asked from ur domain area only. May b the way people are presenting here its sounding that its so bad. but on hindsight if u see most of the things make sense.

I agree that some questions may b out of the picture but those "some" ques points out whether u just answer for the heck of it.

Honesty is the keyword. stick to what u knw and what u dont and if u dont know politely say that.. dont just beat around the bush.

Life in any IIM is very very rigorous that I have come to know after experiencing it and even when u move to Job. The respect and reliability factor with an IIM grad is too high.. which u will later discover .call it underlying 'X' factor or whatever.. this has to be tested which was done last year too.

As a guideline just be careful what u say. and if u had any subject related to mgmt do go through the basics. and if u dont know something just admit it and dont feel bad about that or get nervous. they also know u r just at entrant level. stability if very much reqd and if u maintain ur coolness, I dont see any factor coming between u n ur admit :)

Last year even those who had hobby of dancing ,singing..etc were infact made to do so in interview hall..

also if u see many of Ques are repeated in other interviews. SO u have multiple calls it wld help if they come prepared with previous interview Qs and Ans... many Qs will come which tests the attitude of the person..so best way is keep that smile of urs shining. Just take it as an intelligent conversation. trust me all that pressure build up happens thinking alot about interview moreover thinking m going to face IIM profs

All the best

I actually not in favour of spamming the GD/PI experience thread, but out of curiosity I am doing so. If I am not wrong, then there have been many GD/PI experiences till now. Then why is that so less experiences there in the thread, that too 2 posted by our own diablorulez........I met almost 6 guys who were PG members during my GD/PI. Please post ur experiences, be it good or bad. The way u were benefitted by last yrs experiences, our next batch will be helped by ours. ELse the whole purpose of having this thread is not served.

CASE/GD :
Topic: Same as the one asked in some another location
Mr Chandu was a cleaner in a company and had a driving experience of 15 years He has been loyal to the company and because of his courteous nature popular among people Recently he got a driving license .The officials seeing his diligence in his work decided to promote him as company MDs chauffeur.

He used to do his work meticulously but he has to sometime stretch his work as he was often called even in the wee hours to drop MD or late nights to pick him up. This actually put him under stress.
Though the court exempted him from punishment but the officials took it seriously. Enquiry was ordered and the official suggested termination from employment.

Being the MD what would be your decision?

Work-ex: Almost 2 years

GD: They give a case and we get 5 mins to think about the case. 15 minutes for discussion and the next 5 mins for writing the summary

Case details: There is a farming community called beris. They have been cultivating groundnuts in some region for a long time. 30 years ago a herder community came into the area and they were grazing animals on some unused land. There was some water hole also. Some people of the herder community settled there and started growing vegetables. Things were fine b/w herders and the farmers. Now government is planning an irrigation project which will provide irrigation to the unused land. So both the communities want to claim the unused/unregistered land. The beris(farmers) think that they can grow cash crops. The herders also want the land since they have been using it for more than 30 years.
To settle land disputes like this/to give unregistered land away to villagers govt has established rural councils. Rural coucils have a reputation of being unfair and favouring vested interests. What should the herders do?

Basically we(the group) did not have too much knowledge about such rural issues. There was no fight and we easily came to simple consensues.

Interview: My interview was a long one for about 35 minutes.
Many things were asked. I would only like to describe some of the questions.

Electronics: (Turned out to be like an IISc interview rather than an IIM interview)

  1. Draw clipper, clamper circuits
  2. What are the characteristics of an Operational Amplifer
  3. Nyquist sampling theorem
  4. Why is silicon used over germanium
  5. What are the different semiconductor substrates (Silicon, Germanium, Gallium Arsenide etc)
  6. What are the band gap voltages of silicon and germanium
  7. What is an analog computer. Draw the circuit for that.

Economy:
  1. How does economic crisis in US affect India
  2. Tell 2 main problems facing India
  3. What is the cause of financial crisis
  4. Asked about G-20 meet

General:
  1. Questions about my address. (I live in Basavanagudi in Bangalore). tell me about the area in which you live. What is the history of the area? :w00t:
  2. Rank the IIMs in order of your preference

History(I had told in the form that I read history):
  1. Describe the civil war in Rome.
  2. Tell about Nero the roman emperor.
  3. How does the term "cross the rubicon" come from?
  4. Who is atilla the hun?

Career Goals:
What do you want to do after MBA? I told consulting? Which area in consulting etc etc

It was the most exhaustive interview I have been through. I was fully tired.
The interview season has ended finally. Looking forward to the results

My advice: Interviewers have a lot of time in IIM-Shillong interview since many of them do not turn up. Interviews are going to be long. Those who serious aspirants must prepare throughly. In academics or work exp or anything for that matter.

I would also like to thank the seniors for their efforts in guiding the call getters.I feel that IIM shillong seniors were the most proactive of all the IIM mentors. For many days every morning I check my mail and I find the daily news digest or other important information from the mentors. To be honest I did not interact with any of the IIM shillong seniors but I am sure they would have gone out of their way to help.

As written in the call letter, attested photocopies of the marksheets are needed. Dont take any such chances and get it attested.. it can be done by gazetted officers, doctors, or principal of ur college. U can definitely get the former two professionals easily. As already we are seeing tough interviews, we should not compound our problems and get things done as much as we can. Hope it helps.

From the people who have already attended interviews of IIM-S, please let us know how many in your group have turned up from the alloted total no of students.
