Hello Puys

Let me do the Shri Ganesh for this thread with my experience :)

Your profile:-
10th marks - 80.86% (Gujarat Board)
12th marks - 84.50% (Gujarat Board)
Graduation marks/Stream/College - 81.15% CSE, 2005 NIT Bhopal passout
IIFT marks - 43.67
Work ex - 4 years 7 months till date :)

Interview Centre:- The Golconda, Hyderabad

The process started at exactly 9:30 AM. There were around 30 candidates called today and then we were split into 3 groups of 10 candidates each. All of us sat according to our roll number in U shaped table formation. On the table were a blank sheets for rough work and a sheet for the essay. The profs then announced about the 1st process of Essay Writing.

Essay topic:- Domestic Animals are Man's Best Friends

The essay should be of 300 words and the candidates will be judged on the basis of the following criterion:

  1. Depth of Knowledge on the topic
  2. Clarity of Thoughts

We were given total of 20 minutes after the announcement of the topic. Didn't know what to write for this particular essay topic. But wrote something in the allocated time :)

After this we were give a break of 10 minutes, and at around 10'O clock we were apprised with the GD process.

After the topic is announced, we will be given 5 minutes to pen out thoughts. After that every candidate will be given 1.5 minutes each to air their thoughts and once we are done with all, the house will be open for discussion. During the open discussion, the stop watch would be kept in randomly in front of everyone for 2 minutes by the Prof and that person would be the chairperson for that period of 2 minutes.

The performance in the GD would be judged by the following criteria:

  1. Clarity of Thoughts on the topic.
  2. Listening abilities, body language, team skills
  3. Aggression should not be shown in the discussion

GD topic:- Is climate change alert an exaggeration?

Everyone got the chance to air their views during their individual time slots. Once the discussion was open, it was a good session with everyone getting the chance to put forth their views. We discussed on the following points on the topic:

  1. What is climate change?
  2. What are the effects of climate change?
  3. What are we doing to curb climate change?
  4. Kyoto Protocol, COP15, UNFCCC were discussed breifly
  5. The recent reports by IPCC and TERI and how the reports needs to be validated before blindly following the same
  6. We cam to the conclusion that though the climate change is a bit of exaggeration but it is for the betterment of ourselves and the future generation.

I started the discussion in the open round and pitched in 3-4 times with different points. The duration of the discussion was about 20-24 minutes. Once everyone got the chance to become the chairperson, the Prof announced that the Discussion is over and asked 2 candidates to summarize the discussion. Overall the complete GD was done in a very nice and satisfactory manner

After the GD we were asked to go to another panel stating that they would take out PI. So we all moved to the next panel and at around 11:15 the PI's began. The panel of our PI consisted of 3 Profs.

For me the PI lasted for around 13 minutes and were asked the following questions:

  1. Why you want to do your MBA now?
  2. How do you think IIFT will help you in achieving your goals?
  3. Why you shifted to Avaya from Wipro Tech and are you satisfied with your decision?
  4. How do you see yourself 15 years down the line?
  5. What is the distinct feature about IIFT and why have you applied to it?
  6. What is the crux of the book The Reluctant Fundamentalist? (Mentioned it in the books I had read)

Not able to remember other questions as of now. 😐 In the end they wished me Best of Luck and asked to leave

So this is it. Now the eternal wait for the results continue. All the best to others for their GD/PI process

Cheers!!!

Sid covered most of the things of the Essay and GD
The topics were same for all the 3 groups.

we were made 2 sit in the room at 9:10 and the process started at 9:20 (before time...although we waited for all the 10 participants to fill in)

The essay was for 20 mins to be judged on 4 parameters
1) content
3)clarity of thought
3) logical flow
4) writing skills

Not the same words though but these were the broad parameters

They narrated out all the rules of the games before hand...

GD was as expected.
2 mins each
then the moderator defined the rules for next stage (for open house)
explaining that everyone will be asked to moderate for a min and what he is expected to do as moderator.

The open house lasted for another 15-20 mins and then everyone was asked to summarise the GD (again we were told that we just need to say wat was discussed and no new points in the summary)

Then we were served Tea,snacks and chocolates

Panel was changed for PI.

I was the first to go in. Same was the case for GD (1st for the 2min talk and 1st to summarise)

4 members in the panel 2 lady and 2 gentlemen.

One madam asked me 2 introduce myself in brief.

1) Introduction
2) Questions on my extra cirriculars (i mentioned in intro)
3) hyd and home town - which is better why
4) Something related to mech all of a sudden:oops: (wrk ex of 32 months)
5) Some finance related questions - around 3-4 (my goal was to be in field of fin in the profile)
6) Another 1-2 quests from wat i had written in the sheet.

Thats all
It all lasted for about 9-10 mins

It was pretty chilled out. The most imp thing is the profile sheet which you have filled out.
All the best to everyone.

GD topic and a description:- Is climate change alert an exaggeration?

Instructions for essay and gd were the same as mentioned in the above post.
about the GD:
There were a few aggressive people in the group which led to some cross-talk. Overall i had a good GD apart from the couple of times when I fumbled badly including during my turn at moderation when I fumbled after pressing the bell to get attention! .
Interview:-
3 members. One to my left(L), Middle(M), Right(R)

I walked in and asked permission to take my seat. They were going through my CV-form and then L started.

L: So You are from IT dept JU. Mr X is your HOD. What does he teach you?
Moi: answered
L: So what is the difference between C++ and JAVA.
Moi: mumbled something
L: You went to Kota for IIT coaching? What happened?
Moi: answered
L: What job offers you have?
Moi: answered
L: So You went to kota then to JU . NOw you are placed at X and still you want to come to IIFT. Why?
Moi: tried to say something but my answer must have appeared rehearsed to they asked me I took coaching from where. I answered.

L: So they have told you at coaching to read Atlas Shrugged.
Moi: Tried to defend and talked about i having read fountainhead and atlas shrugged both and that i liked Atlas shrugged more.

L: told me to explain Rand's philosophy.
Moi: tried to say something but R took over

R: You appear very nervous. Dont be so. I will ask you very easy questions.
Moi: Smiled

R: Who is the CM and who is governor of WB.
Moi: told the CMs name but somehow i forgot the newly appointed governor. I said that he was formerly the National security advisor. R then helped me to come up with the answer.

R: You are from Purulia. What is it famous for?
Moi: arms drop case.

R: and something positive.
Moi: chou dance- a form of folk dance

R: There is some forest product for which purulia is known.
Moi: Tasar Silk.

R: That is fine but there is some other product as well.
Moi: cant recall now.

Moi: Furniture varnishing.

R: explained me other uses and how Govt exports LAC and stuff.
Moi: Listened
R: If u come to IIFT then do a report on chou dance and shellac trade. now you can go.
Moi: thanked and left.

Any other comments regarding the conduct etc...
Between the gd and interview, the IMF team of iift seniors interacted with us and patiently answered all queries. Very structured process and overall everything was very professionally managed.

Hey Guys!
I just had my GD/PI today at IIFT Kolkata. The essay topic was kinda vague: Domestic animals are man's best friends. I kind of expected something a little more serious. The GD topic was generic-Is Climate Change Alert exaggerated? I think it turned out quite well and finally my PI--I don't know what to make of it. They asked me nothing about WTO or bank rates or anything to do with what's happening. I was quizzed more about my work(I have a lil over a year's work ex in a logistics co) and a lil about my studies. I work in mkting n sales so was asked about about marketing anf advertising and pr...etc.

For all those of you who are going to appear for it,I suggest you don't freak out, stay calm, and try to stick to what you know. Don't bluff coz they'll grill you on it even more.

I couldn't really tell if I did alright or didn't, coz I couldn't tell from their faces. But then I guess that's why they are on the panel.

Take care and all the best to all of you!
Ritu

Thanks to all
can some one brief what were you expected to do as a moderator.....?

@ rohit, being a fresher you were asked bout placements right
any idea that they are expecting us to placed in good company...
or is it best to say that i didnt opt for placements.... cause they may think i may go for job even if i'm selected

Here goes my exp

Your profile:-
10th marks 91%
12th marks 84.2%
Graduation marks/Stream/College:- 9.71/10, BE Comp Sc, Thapar Institute
IIFT marks 38.something
Work ex:- 17 months
Extra curriculars:- Played cricket at the state level.

Interview Centre:- Coffee Board, Bangalore

Essay topic:- DOmestic animals are a man's best friend. By the end of the essay, even I couldn't make sense of what I'd written.

GD topic and a description:- Topic has already been covered. GD was good, no fish market, 12 people in the group, everyone got a chance to contribute. I chipped in 5-6 times.

Interview:- Interview went really well. My interview lasted for around 10 mins, where they asked me mostly about cricket, a few mathematical calculations (I'd won a prize in college in a maths quiz) and reforms needed by India in the Agriculture, labour and Education sectors (since I'd mentioned Nandan Nilekani's book, 'Imagining India' in the CV form). This interview was better than the SPJ and IIMS interviews that I'd attended last year.

1 thing, none of the persons in my group was asked anything about acads.

Anyways, my marks in the exam are on the lower side and the essay didn't go well, and although I mite have compensated for 'em in the GD and PI, converting for Delhi is going to be tough. Let's see what happens.

Dozing off now..

ATB fellas,

Just make sure that the GD is going peacefully.
If the group is going completely tangential to the topic, get the discussion back to where it should be.
Don't stop anyone from speaking, if he's making a valid point and if someone has a valid point but isn't getting a chance to speak, make sure he gets one.

Gagan.

You're actually told what role you are to play--essentially, as a moderator you ensure it doesn't become a fish market, allow people to view their point, give a change to new people, and guide the discussion in a new direction. I got the chance very early in the GD and had nothing to say as a moderator while the buzzer was with me...guess that' how the cookie crumbles...

Ritu

sorry to dig more into this.. what is that buzzer you guys are talking bout?

It's a silver bell like object with a red base which makes a bell like sound....:P
i guess u've seen this in quizzes n stuff....dnt get paranoid...it's nothing big...nthn u need to worry bout

hahahahahah... i was asking what the moderator is supposed to do with it.... anyways enjoyed ur joke....

actually i think it's just to mark that you are the moderator if it's in front of you....though a couple of people did ring it to make their point heard....i'm not sure that's how it's supposed to work though...u can probably use it in a fish market situation..

Can anyone suggest a good way of answering the following questions in pi?
1) Why an mba?
2) why iift??

these are very commonly asked and yet am not able to figure out a good way of answering them.

1) the answer will vary based on your background...but i guess u cud go on the lines of it being the next course of action...help u in improving ur skills...increase knowledge....its really based on wat ur backgrounf n wer u want from life...n has nthn to do with earning more money...at least as far as the PI is concerned

Hey you puys,
I had my GD/PI today @ Bangalore Coffee Board. It was a nice experience as conductors were friendly and found no elements of stress in PI. These are some of my suggestions to help you guys:
-Be thorough with what you have written in the form
-Take it easy. I found the panel pretty jolly, so no point in creating unnecessary pressure on yourself.
-Stick to the basics.
-Dont anticipate much on what you gonna get for Essay/GD/PI. Be ready for some questions on your education background.

Good luck to all

Hi guys,

I had my IIFT GD/PI at Coffee Board, Bangalore. There were a total of 48 candidates divided into 4 groups of 12 each. I was in group 4.

The essay topic was "Domestic animals are man's best friends". And the GD topic was "Is climate change alert an exaggeration?"

My interview was not all that good. They asked questions from my CV form like what is social engineering and their definition turned out to be far different from what I understood. In the end they asked me to summarise the interview in French. I said I'm learning the language and not yet mastered it. They said in that case you shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place.

I think with a low written score & below average PI, it is game over for me. All the best to other puys.
