Indian Institute for Human Settlement is a leading educational of India with its focus on sustainable, equitable, and efficient transformation of settlements in India. It offers various fellowships and internships to young scholars to prepare them for transforming the nature of urban education.

About the program

The Urban Fellows Program offered by IIHS is designed to identify and train learners in different aspects of urban practice. It is a scholarship-based program that is conducted at the Bengaluru campus of IIHS.

Name of the programme: – Urban Fellows Programme (UFP)

Duration of the programme: – 9 months

• Nature of the programme: – Full-time residential

• Mode of education: – Live projects + classroom learning + site-based applied learning + external internships.

• Eligibility: –

– The maximum acceptable age is 30 years at the time of commencement.

– Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

– If candidates have prior experience in urban sector work, then educational requirements are reduced to having completed 10+2 from a recognized board.

– Candidates must have basic proficiency in English language.

– Only Indian citizens or Nepalese citizens may apply.

• Fees and Scholarships: – 1.75 Lacs payable in three installments. 10% discount for candidates making the payment in one go. Scholarships are available for students on a need basis. Stipends also available for selected candidates to take care of living expenses.

• Important Dates: –

– Application start: – 13th March 2023

– Application close: – 24th April 2023

– Interview (via Skype):– Third week of May 2020

– Final results: – Late June 2023

– Interview

Final candidates will be selected on the basis of the scores in both the selection processes.

The Indian Institute for Human Settlements has launched the Urban Fellows Programme (UFP) 2019-20.  

The UFP is a ten-month, full-time, scholarship-based interdisciplinary fellowship at the IIHS City Campus in Bengaluru. It seeks to combine classroom teaching, site-based applied learning, work in live projects, and external internships to introduce learners to diverse forms of urban practice.

The fourth iteration of this fellowship will run from August 2019 to May 2020. The UFP is committed to providing scholarships to all candidates that receive admission, who are unable to pay the programme tuition, after a review of their financial needs. Recent graduates and young professionals from varied educational backgrounds or practice domains who were born on or after 1 August 1989 are eligible to apply.

Eligibility criteria for the Urban Fellows Programme:

Candidates must not exceed 30 years of age at the time of the fellowship’s commencement. Applicants should be born on or after 1 August 1989. We encourage you to apply if you are:

A candidate with a Bachelors/ Masters/ M.Phil. degree in any subject or discipline, including the social sciences, humanities, planning, architecture, urban studies, development studies, environmental studies, engineering, commerce, management, journalism, law, media and the Arts.

A candidate who has non-degree training and has undertaken certification programmes after their 10+2 schooling.

A candidate who does not have formal education after their 10+2, but has substantial experience (either formal or informal) working on urban concerns and challenges, in sectors such as housing, education, public health, economic development, environmental concerns, water, waste, sanitation, etc.

We encourage applications from women, people with disabilities and those from economically and socially excluded communities. We encourage applicants from smaller urban centers.

Applicants must be Indian citizens. OCI Card holders are not eligible to apply at this time. In addition, citizens of Nepal with valid identity documents (Nepalese passport or Nepalese Citizen Certificate or Nepalese Voter’s Identification Card) are also eligible to apply.

The UFP’s curriculum draws from the IIHS curriculum co-created in partnership with the world’s leading universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University College London (UCL), the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Federal University of the ABC Region, Sao Paulo (UFABC), in addition to nearly a hundred practitioners and scholars from across India.

Academic Calendar-

The seven learning elements are structured across three terms: the Commons Term, the Elective Term and the Internship Term. Fellows are in residence in Bangalore for the first two, and in their internship placements for the third. Two exposure visits are in between. Skill Labs, Applied Practica and Master Classes run throughout the Commons and Elective terms.
