What percentile should one score in CAT to expect a call from FMS?
This post is for all those who are planning to apply and convert FMS this year and wish to know what the last year's process was like. The info given below is for general category and based on last year's(CAT 2014) process -
FMS called approx 1000 candidates for the interview process based solely on CAT score. The last percentile to get an interview call was at 98.54. For the final selection, FMS follows a pattern where in the CAT score is given 85% weightage, PI gets 10% weightage while the remaining 5 is for the extempore. To calculate the CAT weightage, the formula used is - (Scaled score/300)*85. For interviews and extempore, marks are simply awarded out of 10 and 5 respectively. This total (85+10+5) is what constitutes the final score.
Based on the final score, calls are made. They have 101 general seats. So 101 confirmations were sent in the first list while 199 were kept in waiting list. The first list closed at an approx CAT percentile of 99.55. However a lot of students prefer sticking to the IIMs they convert and so subsequent lists were displayed. FMS this year had to display a staggering 11 number of subsequent lists. By the 8th or 9th list, all 199 waitlisted students were over and they still had a few seats remaining vacant. So they now started calling 200 onwards from their masterlist. I believe the last person to convert had a waitlist number of around 215. The lowest CAT percentile to convert(and this becomes important because FMS does give a lot of importance to CAT score) was at 99.17(+- 0.02) and that guy had a PI+Extempore score of 14 out of 15. However if you leave him, the general CAT cut off was at 99.30.
I know a few people who had got an interview call from FMS but simply didn't go because their percentile was in the range of 98.6-99. A 98.5 percentile roughly means a scaled score of 182. So this gives you a CAT weightage of 51.57. Even if you score a 15/15(which I don't think anybody did) you still get a final score of 66.57. After all the lists and everything, the last person to convert had a final score of 68.5.
