Any idea about the expected CAT percentile cutoff for GEM candidates? Would someone stand a chance with 99.00 percentile?
The selection criteria is indeed revised as purported.
Now that it has happened i think i owe you guys my thoughts about these developments rather than just putting up a blunt statement stating the revised criteria. These aren’t just to appease you. It’s more than that because we can empathize with the candidates who are at disadvantage in the recent criteria. Had it happened to us many of us wouldn’t be here. I was kind of hoping this wouldn’t happen ‘cause it does seem unfair to many who have applied for this program for whatever reason. But I guess the authorities were left with no other choice but to just consider the score for final selection. It would have been difficult for the institute as well to scrap the interview altogether because interview is major selection component for the final selection. Since September I have been telling the same or in a way giving hope to many aspirants. Thanks to leaked documents we now know what used to be the weightage of scores and GDPI in final conversion, not that it matters right now. And it isn’t just specific to the department but for all other programs.
Even if the institute had decided to conduct online interviews, it would have also been unfair to those who don’t have good internet facility during lockdown or just when the interview is scheduled something bad happens to your connection or any glitch occurs and Institute can devote only limited time to each aspirant. Whatever they had proposed some would have always been at disadvantage. Though, which method is the more unfair is debatable.
At the same time, institute can’t make exception for any one department because the department isn’t an autonomous body inside the institute; every department has to adhere to central mandate.
Application deadline date was 23rd March and unfortunately lockdown began of 24th march there is no way institute had known about how long the lockdown would be extended. And it doesn’t seem to end any time soon, so the revised criterion is just a result of the current situation and many other variables which is not in their control rather than institute intentionally being ‘unethical’. Don’t get wrong, I am not making a case for their decision, I am only trying to cite possible reasons. As I said it is still unfair to many especially after collecting the application fee.
For the same reason our semester is pushed to June-July, even when they can discharge academic activities online, because not every individual has access to good internet connection.
This situation is pretty bad right now, and even the job market is going to take some time to recover. So wherever you end up being, just keep on upskilling yourselves and be prepared for unforeseen circumstances that are yet to befall you.
Since the admission criteria has been revised, is it possible that the application forms be reopened again for a few days so that students who didn't fill up the forms earlier due to personal reasons of not being able to attend the PI will get an opportunity?
Hi Adcom,
Any PI shortlist is expected soon?
Please update.

Dear Team
They have mentioned they consider 100% GATE/CAT score. By doing this, it is not fair for the WORK EX people. At least they should consider the Profile like other institute had done.(10/12/WORK EX). Can we mail them so that at least they can consider?
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1E6RFLbvKS9ct7GaoHTDdN4VfbBaE5Y7yHdayT5CabY4/edit?usp=drivesdk Please fill this form with your CAT percentile in your respective category ,it will give us a good idea about what to expect !!!
Hi all, So now that official communication has been published with 100% weightage given to CAT/GATE/GMAT scores for final selection. Here are a few points being raised by aspirants and their possible clarification: 1) Add weightage for work-ex/academic profile for final selection. Ans) Now that you know, even previously there was 70% weightage to GD-PI and 30% to CAT/GATE/GMAT, this is probably the only B-School in the country of such a repute which gives you a chance to start afresh and not just based on what has happened/you have done in the past. Just because things are working in your favour due to work-ex weightage or previous acads weightage doesn't make it a level ground for all. 2) Why are GD-PI not being conducted online like other B-Schools? Ans) Simply because not everyone has proper internet connectivity during these times, and even if they could go out to cafes or other places for internet connectivity in normal times, lockdown has made it impossible. You will realise this thing during the conduct of such arrangements by other institutes, and hence it's not fair to all. 3) Why not telephonic interview? Ans) Two reasons: a) overloaded telecom operators are causing disruptions in connectivity, I myself, being in Mumbai, am not getting proper connection for last 15-20 days, let alone the remote areas. b) simply interviewer won't know who is giving the interview, there can be frauds of many types. I think this covers most of your doubts, if you still have grievances you can write to admission cell. If you think we can answer some, you can comment below. Once again, these are not normal times, none of us would have wanted this under normal conditions and would have loved hosting you all in the campus, showing you around. Stay Safe, Good Luck!
Hello @BornKingRS,
IISC Bangalore has provision of only online application to my knowledge. Did the admission committee not think during the application period itself that many candidates may not have good internet connectivity or no internet at all for applying?
It is common wisdom that internet is available to everyone. They should have taken into account all the stakeholder's view on this matter including the students if we are fine with online interview or not? It is just a hasty decision.
I think a institute of eminence and international repute should not go back to older times and draw its feet backstep by fearing that people do not have internet connectivity. Instead of promoting digital India, you are taking a backstep.
The step taken is not justifiable at all when there are alternative ways possible. Also, the institute should learn from many IIMs, NITIE, IITs who have either postponed or taken online interview or asked to upload recorded videos of a few questions.
There are lots of platform to take online interview like Talview, zoom, skype etc. Also, If the institute fear that internet speed may not be good, arrangements can be made like sending recorded videos of a few questions via whtsap or other platforms. Infact, the admission commitee do entertain admission queries via whtsap then why not video interview?
100% weighatge to CAT score in no way justifies that institute is being fair in judging a students ability by neglecting students' past performances. It does give undue advantage to people who may be preparing for past few years against a working person. Moreover, I have seen IISC has given 30% weightage in some programmes as CAREER ANALYSIS MARKS consisting of 10th, 12th and graduation score.
It is not a big task to find alternate solutions to take interview when the intake is only 19 and total shortlisted candidates may be somewhere around 400-500. Many institutes of equivalent brand, repute and excellence are dealing with interviews of thousands of candidates without any fuss.
I hope you would understand the students' concern and by placing yourself into same position as we are. It would be a matter of appreciation if you can communicate the students' concern to admission committee as well as IISC Director and put strong alternative recommendations for a fairs system of admission.
Thanks!
