The ISB invited business plans from B School students and alumni from across the Asian region. In addition to mentoring the participants, the GSVC provides an opportunity for B School students to meet with venture capitalists, potential investors and academicians who support social ventures.

The GSVC focuses on three important aspects of a business plan:
  1. The business plan should have a financially sustainable model.
  2. It should have the potential to be scalable
  3. Possess a quantifiable social and/or environmental bottom line incorporated in to its mission and practices

The Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC) brings together the academic and financial worlds to support the creation of sustainable social ventures. The GSVC awards prizes to the business plans that show the highest and most integrated financial and social returns. Since its inception in 1999, GSVC has awarded more than US $ 300,000 to emerging social ventures and has introduced early-stage social entrepreneurs to the investment community

The ISB has been organizing GSVC in association with Helios & Matheson, a healthcare focused IT Services Company, since the last 2 years. The company is actively involved in promoting social entrepreneurship. This year the event has attracted participation from several social entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and industry leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, M Rammohan Rao, Dean, ISB said, “The ISB is committed to promoting entrepreneurship, especially in the emerging economies. The GSVC provides the right opportunity to support and groom entrepreneurs in this region to build global competitiveness.”

The forum was opened for discussion by a presentation by the XFIN highlighting the key features of the budget and the relevant questions to be discussed upon by the panelists. Amongst the key features that came through after the discussion were issues relating to the upliftment of the poorer sections of society and 128th rank in the Human Development Index despite a growing economy. Other than that the level of health care available to the poor sections were considered in the light of PPP as mentioned in this year's budget.

Towards the end of the discussion Mr Jagadananda highlighted the fact that the poorer sections did not have a strong lobby to monitor their development and advancement and how the social activists needed to step in and lobby for their cause. He mentioned how by being 'active citizens' we can help the cause of the rural poor. The problems were attributed to the fact that the budget was more of a outlay mechanism rather than outcome based where bodies would actively monitor the outcome and not the outlays. The discussion was ended with a plea by Mr Trilokya Jena to the students on how they should take up the cause and help the state government with projects and give suggestions on how to structure the resources for the planned expenditure and not just discuss the budget which would be forgotten in a short span of time. The discussion was followed by a question answer session where the panelists answered to the students queries regarding the budget.

Welcoming the chief guest, Mr N K Singh, Chairman of MDI Board of Governors exhorted the students to step out from their conventional box and think freely and creatively.

Dr Sujit k Basu, Director MDI, defined convocation as the celebration of completion of a journey, a student undertakes while in his college. He also shared his concerns regarding the globalization and its impact on higher education. He emphasized that the Indian higher education needs a systematic overhaul, so that we can educate much larger numbers without diluting our academic standards. He further expressed his desire to forge close partnership with major international, national, and regional organizations active in higher management education.

Mr. Anand Mahindra in his brief but crisp speech compared MDI with Dronacharya's Gurukul where the great rulers and warriors, the Pandavas and Kauravas, were trained and educated.

Zensar has pursued the industry-academia collaboration model to attract fresh talent and to address existing skills shortage with its academic tie-ups with colleges under its Centre of Excellence (CoE) initiative. The collaboration with UoE will address the shortage of managerial skills and also help in developing an entrepreneurial workforce. The collaboration would involve joint research and collaborative teaching between Zensar and the UoE for business transformation and technology management.

The collaboration envisages three distinct areas:

  • Sponsored research on Global Delivery Platform as an entrepreneurial opportunity in Essex and Eastern Europe, to be done at the Southend campus of the University.
  • Co-teaching of the Post Graduate Program for Business Transformation that has been launched by the Zensar Centre for Business Innovation.
  • Joint development of entrepreneurial talent in UK through a centre at the campus of the School of Entrepreneurial Business powered by Zensar's technologies.
ZCBI would collaborate with the University of Essex in creating the bridge between business and learning through its joint programme of collaborative research and teaching. ZCBI's Pune Centre is an autonomous research and innovation centre for Zensar Technologies, focused at providing world class Research Development and Education of resources for its global customers. An Extension Centre would be created in the University of Essex using Zensar's home grown Solution BluePrint (SBP). The Solution BluePrint is Zensar's framework that enables software automation and creation of reusable components. The Solution BluePrint helps capture business process models, and to create reusable components that helped heighten the efficiency in software development. The SBP has ensured productivity efficiency for a number of Zensar's customers.

Through this joint effort the ZCBI curriculum would be accredited by the UoE; the student would then spend nine months in Pune at the Zensar Campus and could opt to spend three months at University of Essex, creating a global experience for them and accelerating their learning to make them business ready.

Last year Zensar announced the launch of its innovation centre, the Zensar Centre for Business Innovation (ZCBI). ZCBI has launched a One Year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Business Transformation that aims at creating a pool of skilled managerial resources by combining technology and architecture skills with business analysis concepts in chosen industries.
Systems Continuum:
The theme of the event was 'The Evolution of IT in the Changing Macroeconomic Scenario' and was attended by executives from companies like Google, Yahoo, eBay, BMC software, Alcatel-Lucent, Virtusa and Headstrong.

The event started with an inaugural speech by Prof Ms Karuna Jain, HOD, SJMSOM. This was followed by a key note address by Mr Prasad Ram, head of R&D; at Google India on 'Role of Innovation in IT'. He spoke about building an innovative organisation by hiring the best and focusing on users not competition and illustrated the same by several innovations like the personalized iGoogle homepage in India, Gmail basic html page for bandwidth starved India, transliteration and Google maps, amongst others. He stressed on the importance of the 20% rule at Google which led to the development of products like Google News and Google Scholar.

Mr Pankaj Dhume, VP Global Practices, BMC Software spoke on the 'Future of India based R&D; captive centres'. He spoke on how innovation is the key to the future of R&D; units and that India offers immense opportunities for innovation. This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Prof NL Sarda, Dept of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay and had Mr. Pankaj Dhume, VP Global Practices, BMC Software, Mr. Akhil Agarwal, Vice President, Virtusa (India), Mr. Anurag Singh, VP Headstrong as panelists. The topic of discussion was 'Maintaining Competitive advantage amidst challenges from other technology destinations'.

The post lunch session saw a talk by Mr Rajan Mehra, country manager of eBay India. He spoke on 'Leveraging international e-business strategies for Indian customers'. He specifically mentioned GenY which has radically different preferences on the net and the sudden explosion of the touch points in the form of mobile and desktop applications which reach the living room. Keyword search is no longer the exclusive form of search. With the dawn of the video age, communication and to some extent even buying is happening through video; however the biggest challenge is the low Broadband penetration in India which is inhibiting the extensive use of video. He ended by saying that trends indicate more media and retail companies would get into e-commerce.

This was followed by Mr Pranesh Anthapur, COO, Yahoo! India speaking on the topic of 'Impact of Rupee appreciation on Indian IT and new business drivers in the current scenario'. He spoke on how to negate the impact of the rising rupee in the short and long-term.
The event ended with a talk by Mr Vivek Mohan, Country Head, Alcatel-Lucent India. Mr Vivek Mohan quelled any fears of an IT crisis in India in the wake of the dollar depreciation. Contrary to popular belief, he questioned the validity of the business model of cost arbitrage, and a talented pool of sharp people who could quickly pickup the support of a project from an on-site location. That model, though successful for some time, has now started to break down. He said that a new business model focusing on the domestic market will be the next step for IT companies in India.

Consulting Continuum:
The theme of the event was 'The restructuring of organizations to make the most of India's current growth scenario'. This continuum was attended by consultants from Accenture, Protiviti, Strategic Decision Group, Technopak and KPMG. Along with the students of SJMSOM, the event was attended by about 40 participants from six business schools around Mumbai.

The event started with an address by Prof. Atanu Ghosh of Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, who introduced the topic and explained to the student how consultants practice the teaching of SJMSOM, to solve real life problems and explaining the lure of the consulting. Following that was the introductory speech by Mr Sadeesh Raghavan, Managing Partner Accenture Business Consulting. He stressed on the role companies in emerging economies, something he specializes in, and how today's world is not a cluster of discrete islands but a multi polar world. Going deeper into the topic he explained the traditional approach to restructuring and also on the M & A route of growth and restructuring. He also shared the insights into the culture at Accenture and how a consultant's life, which seems to be filled with CEO meets and field visits, actually requires immense homework.

The next speaker was Mr Adithya Bhat, Director of Protiviti Consulting. He said that when it comes to comparing India and China, India is lesser exposed to global recession than the latter because India has bigger consumer base at home and is relatively less export driven. Citing his personal experience of the merger of Arthur Anderson and E &Y;, he elaborated on the role of consultants in a restructuring deal.

The next talk was delivered by Mr Manish Chheda, Associate Director, Strategic Decisions Group. Mr. Chheda spoke on the restructuring needs of organizations from the top management's perspective

Post Lunch saw a presentation from Amol Deshpande, Associate Director, Technopak. He explained the role of a consultant by playing a small game. He stressed on the point that a consultant is not just one who shows the direction but also partners the company. Starting from the contemporary business cycle, he explained the impact of various decisions taken by a consultant on the future of the company. Later taking the case of retail industry, he gave great insights into the recent retail phenomenon. Last speaker for the day was Mr. Shaswat Sharma, Associate Director, KPMG. In the panel discussion the audience was asked to shoot questions straight away. Last in the day, was a case study workshop conducted by Prof Atanu Ghosh. The quiz began with a written elimination round where Mr Anthony asked 25 questions to all the 14 competing teams, answers of which they had to write on a piece of paper & submit to Mr. Anthony at the end of the round. On the basis of these answers 6 teams namely Synapse 1, the host team GIM, Bajaj Alliance, Savoir Faire, Persistent Systems, Synapse 2 were short-listed for the next round. The battle for the winning title consisted of 4 rounds, the last two being buzzer rounds. The quizmaster ensured that it was an interactive quizzing session giving the audience ample opportunities to win prizes. Mr. Chaturvedi started with the importance that leadership plays especially in today's corporate world. Stressing on the fact that managers and leaders who can be successful anywhere in the world are the need of the hour, he said that his experiences across borders have taught him that there are more commonalities than differences between people. An appreciation of these commonalities is what makes leaders successful and also helps them groom leadership and retain it. As he went on he displayed a pyramid that showed the characteristics of globally capable managers. These he said are functional mastery, proactive and knowledge based leadership and global communication. Stressing on global communication, he said that it is not just the ability to speak a language but communicate with people of varied cultures.

Then he went on to the next part which was titled 'My Beliefs'. He started off with stressing on the point that innovation is an outcome and it thrives when people have fun and fulfillment through work and that knowledge based leadership as opposed to hierarchy based leadership is the key to achieving this. An important belief which he said should be practiced is focusing on outcomes and rewarding results.

The next belief that he put forth was that change is opportunity saying that leading change, learning to be comfortable with uncertainty, challenging paradigms and breaking down myths and important qualities that global leaders should posses. Conflicts are a part of leadership and he acknowledged this fact. An important point that he said he has learnt through experience is building a diverse, local organization for sustainable growth of business. The emphasis thus should be on Promoting diversity and developing local talent. After this, he introduced the audience to the knowledge based leadership model and talked about its various aspects. With this he ended his presentation and threw the floor open for questions.

While addressing the audience, he spoke about the type of media journalism that is existent in the country. He stated that the number of channels sharing the media space has been growing with every passing day and hence the content has fallen to mediocre standards. News is being sensationalized and made to look like a Page 3 event. He pointed out the alarming drop of ethics in journalism and the loss of power of serious questioning by the media. “Page 3 has descended on to Page1 and chaddi-banian journalism is becoming popular” remarked Rajdeep.

He also emphasized on the power of the internet and the effect it will have on news coverage in the near future. He suggested that the Indian citizens should be given an opportunity to question the media and the content they cover everyday in the name of journalism. He also laid strong emphasis on exploring rural areas and bridging the divide between the India that is being celebrated and the India that needs to be explored. He said that 'Multimedia model, would be the way to go in the future in order to build unsoiled and efficient journalism. A robust business model would be necessary for any media house to survive in today's competitive world.
