Hi, I have been working as an software engineer in Tech Mahindra for 5 years now, and i plan on giving GMAT in december this year. I have been appearing in competitive exams lately, so i am well prepared to appear for the GMAT exam. However, I dont know where to start, as in where to get the GMAT syllabus, sample test papers and also the colleges to apply to later on. Can someone give me a preptalk on how to kickstart my GMAT plans and where do i get free material to read from.
I have appeared for GMAT and now am planning to apply for MIS and business analytics in several universities in USA. I had done my BTech in EEE. Can anyone provide any sample Letter of Recommendations and Statement of Purpose for my application??
Getting into a top B-School is a
dream of all the MBA aspirants. There are various factors which influences the
final decision of the admission committee. Recommendations also play a vital
role in the admission process. In most of the case recommendation is something
which is not controllable by the applicant. Or rather it is not possible to
influence the recommender. There are a
lot of factors that needs to be checked with regards to the recommendations and
recommender.
Why is a
recommendation letter required?
Over the period of time MBA has
become a serious thought and a practice for career boost. Especially when a prestigious college name
gets added to your profile, your career growth becomes exponential. Most of the
top schools require a few recommendations as part of the MBA application. This
helps the schools to get an unbiased feedback of your skills, your roles, and
the initiatives you have taken to bring about a change in the organization. It
is possible to work on your analytical skills and your language skills if you
dedicate serious time towards it. But it is highly impossible to get a good
recommendation over a fortnight. It is all about how your initiatives and
leadership skills has brought an impact to the organization you are associated
with.
Who can be a recommender?
When schools ask for a
recommendation, they want the recommendations to come from a person whom you
are associated with or someone who closely analyses your activities. It can be
your reporting manager at your current job or manager whom you have worked with
closely in your previous company. Your professor from college can also be your
recommender if you are applying to college fresher's programs. If you
associated with any social clubs or NGO's, your supervisor or the head of the
club can also be a recommender. Please make sure that you do not suggest your
peer from the work place as your recommender. Also try avoiding the heads of
the business (CXOs, Directors, GM) unless you are reporting to them on a
regular basis as they need not be aware of your contributions and involvement.
For those who are into sales and marketing, client servicing or an
entrepreneur, clients are also eligible to become your recommender.
It is always good to discuss your
MBA plans to the recommender and keep them in loop as it will avoid the
confusion. Be cautious while selecting the recommender and make sure you do
have a good rapport with the recommender. It is not advisable to write your own
recommendations, because it is possible for the admissions committee to analyze
the authenticity of the recommendation. Selecting a wrong recommender may even
cost you your admission.
ISB or IIM? Most of the MBA aspirants from India have this
question while planning for their MBA. It is difficult for them to choose
between the two. However both these B-Schools are distinct from each other in
various aspects. It is very important to understand the requirements of the
B-Schools before applying to them.
IIMs are a familiar name among
the students who are planning for an MBA since decades in India. With its
presence in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode and Lucknow, IIMs have
set a benchmark in the Indian management education. But with the rise of ISB
the aspirants from India got a world class B-Schools with international
standards. Indian students had reasons to think beyond the Ivey league
B-Schools and IIMs. IIMs had only a less number of seats for their PGPX
programs, while ISB has more than 700 seats for the aspirants which made the
candidates attracted toward it. Unlike IIMs the selection criteria was not too
strict which allowed the ISB to gain confidence. But it is not possible for
anyone to get an admission at ISB. At ISB average GMAT score is around 711 and
average work experience is around 4 years. Students with good and proven
management skills always had an upper hand at the time of admissions. However
at IIMs the candidate's previous academics and average work experience of 6+
years was given weightage. This means if you are aiming at the IIMs PGPX
program you should start the preparation right from you matriculation rather
than an age which you decide to mold you career.
With all these reasons and being
one of its kind global B-School in India, ISB started gaining importance among
the young minds who are looking to make a career shift and an career progress.
Moreover ISB also started programs like Young Leaders Program and Early Entry
Option which gave options to aspirants to apply while they are in college and
soon after their graduations. If you are aiming to be part of this world class
MBA program, start your preparations without wasting any time.
Try getting a 720+ in your GMAT
and prepare you application essays well. However if you need to talk to the
alumni of ISB to understand your chances.

All Chicago Booth and HBS interview invites for R1 are out. Also, LBS doled out plenty of interview invites this week. One of our candidates with 680 GMAT and 3.4 GPA - got LBS interview invite. So proud!
Catch me in conversation with the US Ambassador to India, Mr. Richard R. Verma this morning at Radio One google hangout. It was an absolute honour and delight to be a part of this show. Mr. Ambassador has some great advice for all Indian aspirants, seeking education in the US!
All B schools want to know how you will contribute to the MBA class.
It is thus imperative for you to showcase your competencies with examples and instances in your MBA application.

At a B school your competencies help you differentiate. So when knowledge and skills fail to make you unique enough, look towards your ATTITUDE.
