Hey,

Here is my profile -

10th - 94%
12th - 90%
Graduation - Btech in IT with Honours ( 8.5/10 ) from IIIT.

Work Ex - Working in one of the top tech companies as a Software Developer (since June 2011). Got some recognition in office for good work.
Internships - 1. Two months internship with a PSU.
2. Six months internship with a startup.

ECA - Involved in lots of Sports Activities. Have played Football and Cricket at School, University and Club levels. Involved in organization of various events in school, college and office. Was a part of Student Council at School (dunno if that counts).

Academics - Got a bunch of research papers and certificates of merit in National level Science/Maths Olympiads (dunno if this counts).

Dream Schools - LBS, INSEAD, SAID and of course top 5-10 US programs. (yes I know I am very ambitious 😞 )

I am scheduled to give GMAT in July this year. Here are my queries -

1. How much GMAT should I aim at?

2. I am interested in a B-School which is very well renowned across the globe and has excellent placements. With only 2 years of work experience, I don't think any such school will be interested in me 😞 . Any suggestions on this?

3. What all schools can I target? I am somehow not very interested in US, but all the jobs are in US only. Are there any other schools which have excellent job opportunities post MBA (probably in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand)?

Thanks a lot in advance.
@underdog118 London business school..though better try in 2014..u can try for MIM this yr or ISB

gmat score - 710 (quant 50, verbal 35). i think i should apply in rochester-simon, smu cox and scheller-georgia coz they provide scholarships. What other colleges can i apply to so that i can get some scholarship with this score ??

that didn't sound good. Pardon me. Rephrase: Which colleges can I apply to so that I have some good chances of schol with this score, (so as to get into an affordable MBA)?

And my mini profile is like this:
Btech: CGPA 7.46 ,yr 2010 , IIT
Word ex - 25months in industry ; 10 months (and currently) in self business (clothings)
10th -84% ; 12th- 83%
Cocurriculars : >>Have done 4 projects (including one in UK), >>lead a team of 4-5peo ple in 3rd and 4rth yr at college for the college magazine. >> two event organizations >> one NGO participation in 1st yr.

Career goals : I am open for anything. But physically demanding field work in operations is a strict no-no (25 months of field work really made me aversive to it). Marketing is a no-no as I don't want to spend 3-4 days every week traveling out. HR no. Consultancy- probably no because I have never been in a client oriented job before. So left only with finance I guess? So finance is my current goal - it meets my strengths and my likenesses too. But as I said I am open to anything as long as it meets above criteria. :)

Strengths : quants (50 in gmat, IIT, 99 in maths in 10th). research skills (have done 4 decent projects in college). Programming skills.
Weakness: physically demanding work like those in industrial sector or when traveling doing marketing. (also to some extent english :/ )

^ I am elaborating on my work ex too (in case you need it to make a reply to me)

Work ex of 25 months was in industrial sector. I worked in a 5000crore greenfield project. Working in greenfield is important because one learns about a wide range of business nuances, from the bottom most level to the top most, from department to X to a far distant department Z, thus makes one expert in his/her area and the evidence is that market value/bonus of such people is generally higher. I got this position through a huge competition among top people. Job title was assistant manager but I worked in everything as it was a greenfield project.
The second work ex of 10 months is in my own business I have set up with my friends. It deals with clothings and is at the moment a lucrative business, mostly becasue (I think) competitors are inertial in their act. I am doing work in general management area, and also in marketing and branding the product.

PS: I am reading ,and have read most of, this thread and surprisingly found no query regarding which colleges offer generous financial aids O_O . Am I the only one concerned about huge buget of phoren B-schools and seeking leeway πŸ˜› ?

I also want to know why MS is done with 0-2 yrs of work ex only, whereas people with 3-4yrs work ex ,who are looking for a career switch to finance, prefer MBA-finance , while both (MS and MBA in finance) can be used for a career switch equally and both have 1 or 2 yrs options ?

Hi, I got your type error :)

Interesting work. I hope there has been a lot of action because the impact you were able to make on this project (your achievements) will be important.

Not getting a promotion because of your company policy does not matter so much, but does your hierarchy band give you bandwidth to take on initiatives and do things proactively? I think from this perspective, you would have a little less experience by September 2013 (just 2 years) - maybe you should wait another year and apply with a richer experience.

Ofcourse, its a different story if you are a (super)star performer.

Knowing another language is always good, but how can you best use this experience? Maybe polish it up further? get involved in your French institute - do translations/ organize events/ help them enroll new students/ anything else.

I agree with you that you need some more work experience before you apply. There are tons of Indian applicants out there with your work profile. How can you differentiate yourself from them? I am sure that you have done great stuff at work, but there is a likelihood that your achievements are similar to other people with your profile.

Generally internships do not count as full time work experience

Continue your involvement here. An interest/ activity that goes back a long way reflects passion, and that helps make a good impression.

the research papers- these sound interesting. Any awards/ publications?

My previous response about waiting a couple of years and strengthening your profile is linked to your choice of b-schools. These b-schools will look for leadership qualities and I doubt your current work experience would have given you too many opportunities on this front.

Already talked about this.

Which among 'all the jobs" are you targeting? All schools ask for your career goals, and you would need to answer this bit of information there.

Thanks a lot for your detailed response. I think my dream schools are gonna be "dreams" only 😞 . I do not have a lot of time before I go for my MBA.

What other schools can I target with my profile?

I am mainly interested in jobs in Technology sector.

A lot of companies offer Leadership development Programs as post MBA roles, so it would be nice if you can explain the career path people would take after finishing the program that you are into.

Some b-schools you should look at :

Stanford (dream)

MIT

CMU

Arizona State university - Carey School of Business :

Home - SCM - W. P. Carey School of Business

Fisher College of Business-Ohio

Fisher College of Business | Operations and Logistics

Penn state- Smeal school of Business

Supply Chain and Information Systems - Penn State Smeal College of Business

Your GMAT score is not very competitive, though I think being in a rotational program, you would have got the chance to gain a lot of leadership experiences. Essentially, your work profile seems good and retaking GMAT to improve your score by another 30-40 points will help tremendously in getting admission to higher ranked b-schools as well as getting scholarship.
