Hey,

I applied in round 1 this year and got a reject.

My profile:

- 2+ years experience as a Software developer(Barclays)

- 740 GMAT

- Got an interview call on day 1(called to ISB Hyderabad) and the interview was very brief(15-20 min). Was asked basic questions like why mba, etc. Answered pretty confidently.

- Post-mba goal: Product management. Could convice the panel why I wanted to do product management. Panel seemed convinced.

- Co-curriculars: Toastmasters, Leadership roles in college

- Won awards at work.

Everything seemed positive. I am not sure where I missed.

Can someone give me an insight into what ISB is looking in candidates with a profile like mine?

 Hi,

Can you please tell me - I have experience letter from my previous organization, do I still need to upload salary slips/IT return in work ex segment? And should it be the last salary slip or the first one?

Thanks in advance.

Whats the current view on ISB? With the fee increase I am wondering why it is advantageous to study there vs. international options? Also recent feedback from a few alums has been pretty bad...

ISBmantra Interview Experience Series

Interview Experience 1

Candidate Profile: 3+ years in the Manufacturing Industry

Interviewer 1: How are you associated with the Green Batti project?

A: Told him that my cousin brother is the founder of the project and he offered me a mentorship role in that project.

Interviewer 1: What was your role and how did you contribute to the cause?

A: I told him that I’ve been associated with it for about a year and a half & have mentored 3 kids during this period….They do have proper schooling due to the initiatives like Teach for India etc. but they lack in areas such as soft skills etc.

Interviewer 2: You seem to be really good with numbers.

A: Yes sir. That’s my Bread and butter.

Interviewer 2: What is 35% of 1 lac 44 thousand?

A: 50,400

Interviewer 2: 42% of 3.75 crores

A: 1.575 Crores

Interviewer 1: Your company has bought humongous amounts of land in Jharkhand and Bengal for Steel projects and is not still operational. What is your take on the same?

A: Sir, in Bengal we had environmental clearance issues, and hence we could not put up a Steel Plant up there, so we went ahead and returned a part of the land and then set up a 2.4 million tonne Cement plant there, which was inaugurated a few months back by none other than the CM of WB, Mamata Banerjee.

Interviewer 1: What about Jharkhand?

A: Sir, everybody knows North India is a difficult place to set up businesses due to land issues and political issues. We do have plans and did demonstrate our plans about the Jharkhand plant at the Make in India week too.

Interviewer 3: But you have taken away land from tribals. What happens to them?

A: People did relocate to areas such as WB, but you will also have to realize the fact that we ended up paying big sums for acquiring their lands, their future is secured for the next 6-7 years….But, if the plant does come up, then not only are we having a steel plant but ancillary units would set up plants to cater our purposes, so more industrialization and development.

Interviewer 2: Now, show us your strategy skills. I’m providing you with the sponsorships and you need to arrange a whole marathon.

A: Started off with permissions from local authorities and then went on with other aspects such as medical assistance, volunteers, security, water resources, advertising for sponsors, pricing for participants etc. (9 points in total)

Interviewer 2: You said Manpower – How many?

A: Would depend on the no. of participants

Interviewer 2: 40 Thousand

A: Would there be a breakup of participants for 7 kms, 21 kms and 42 kms.

Interviewer 1: Yes, of course. 24 Thousand, 12 Thousand and 4 Thousand respectively.

A: Sir, I think if we make an assumption that we need 1 volunteer for approx. 200 participants, we would need 200 volunteers and another 10 to probably manage these 200 volunteers. That would mean almost 4 volunteer for every km.

Interviewer 3: But later stages would have lesser participants

A: I told him that later stages would require more assistance due to the rigour.

Interviewer 2: How much water is required?

A: Again based on assumptions, I would say approx. 1 ltr. For the 7km participants, 5 ltrs. For the 21 kms participants, 10 ltrs approx. for 42 kms participants

Interviewer 2: Great, but I think you’re still a CA first, because it was money first for you

A: Sir, I think that’s what matters at the end of the day!

ISBmantra Interview Experience Series

Interview Experience 4

Candidate Profile: 5 years as an entrepreneur

Q1: Read your essays. They were interesting. Shall we talk about your venture, its revenue, products and pricing?

A: Briefed them on my venture, current products, problems faced in pricing few of these products and expected revenue.

Q2: How do you differentiate your products from the market?

A: Quality. We are trying to source raw materials and process in-house to control quality. Since we are dealing with fewer quantities right now, we are ok. Should work on the logistics for future expansion.

Q3: How did you arrive in pricing these products?

A: Discussed in detail.

Q4: You said you have recently launched your products to the market. What were you doing for the past 2 years?

A: I researched on various herbal options in the market. The market being disorganised, it was tough to get quality products. Also my lack of experience in this field has taken time.

Q5: Why MBA?

A: Coming from a technical background, I need to understand and apply management strategies. Also, a reputed B-school like ISB will give me a chance to network with people from different fields that would help in my future expansions.

Q6: An entrepreneur need not learn the technicalities of management. You can hire somebody like me.

A: Even to get you on board, I need the skill to sell you my business idea so that you are convinced.

Q7: Who will look after your venture if you get into ISB?

A: Since we are in the starting stage with few products right now, I do have a trusted person who can handle the daily activities. But the marketing strategies and expansion plans I talked about implementing might have to wait. My intervention may not be required more than once a month. My father is there to look after if something serious has to be done.

Q8: So what exactly is your role in your venture?

A: I was involved starting from Idea phase to identifying products and releasing them to the market. My father runs an engineering industry from many years. Initially, I started identifying people from my father’s business network, which later on expanded as we went on. He is supporting this venture by looking into Finance and I am involved in all the operations.

Q9: Ok. So you have your venture to get back to. Will you sign a bond that you will not sit for placements?

A: My reason for an MBA is definitely to expand my venture. But if I get an opportunity to work in companies like, Himalaya or Dabur which are well established, it would be a great learning experience for me before I get back.

ISBmantra Interview Experience Series

Interview Experience 5

Candidate Profile: 4+ years as a CFA

Interviewer 1: So you live close by! It must be nice not to travel too far from home.

A: Yes, definitely. Came in couple of hours early in order to settle my nerves and get an opportunity to interact with other applicants.

Interviewer 1: That’s good. So I’ve gone through your application. Can you run me through your application?

A: Mentioned about CA-Final, experience in CA internship while auditing banks such as PNB and BoI, global experience at EY in corporate and international tax, need for shifting to family business and work-profile in family business.

Interviewer 1: You have an interesting profile. Can you tell me about your experience where you assisted the wind power plant to reduce its interest cost?

A: Followed the STAR approach and explained how I helped my client reduce its interest cost by exchanging an Indian Rupee loan for a foreign currency (USD) loan.

Interviewer 2: Question on Hedge cost related to the USD loan and how much it impacts the client given the recent depreciation of Rupee against dollar.

A: Answered.

Interviewer 2: That’s interesting! It is good that the client had quite some buffer to cover up for the Hedge cost.

A: Oh yes! We selected *client name* specifically for getting a favorable Hedge cover. Though the client is covered for movement up to INR 68/ USD, beyond that rate, the client needs to shell out additional funds to cover for further depreciation.

Interviewer 1: Alright. So you seem to have done well at EY and are managing clients well in the family business. Why do you think you need a MBA now?

A: Mentioned about the whole transition from tax to debt finance. Need for private equity with focus on solving operational issues my clients face presently.

Interviewer 1: I still don’t understand why you require a MBA?

A: Gave a backdrop of the present economic scenario in India - Impact of devaluation of Chinese Yuan, falling exports and rising NPAs in public sector banks. Linked it with need to solving operational problems that clients face to cut costs and increase turnover. How strategy consulting fits in well. Long-term - how PE funds require a prior multi-functional and multi-sector expertise in strategy consulting for investing in portfolio companies.

Interviewer 1: So you want to get into PE in the long-term. Why ISB then? Why not a school in the US?

A: Explained the benefit of 1 year MBA, focus on India, how its helps given that my long-term goal is to come back into the family business that is India-centric.

Interviewer 1: So why not USA? All major PE funds are based out of USA. How does being in India help?

A: Yes, agreed. But ultimately even if the partner sits in the US, he needs to contact the Indian partner while investing in India. He can’t take decisions independently sitting in the US because problems are very India-focused that only the Indian PE team can understand and solve effectively.

Interviewer 1: I see that you stick with your beliefs. But why not attend the best schools in USA? The PE industry is doing well there.

A: Explained how the portfolio faculty model ensures I get the optimum mix of global faculty with prior work-ex in those top schools amalgamated with the Indian ISB faculty. Gave examples of Professor Sarang Deo (at Kellogg before ISB) and Professor Raveendra Chittor (Strategy courses).

Interviewer 1: Do you know Professor XYZ at ISB?

A: No sir, I don’t know him but as I was mentioning, I don’t really see the need to go in the US when the faculty having taught in those schools come at ISB itself. It’s a perfect match of global pool with local Indian research.

Interviewer 1: Tell me something that’s not mentioned in your application. A: I discussed a NGO project and how ISB will provide me an opportunity to develop leadership traits to take up a leadership position in the NGO project….The need to work across diverse teams, develop leadership skills and get an opportunity to apply them at ISB.

Interviewer 1: Why not do the reverse? Why don’t you join the project now, apply the skills there and then come to ISB?

A: Mentioned how I presently lack the skills needed to manage diverse and multiple teams on such a large scale. Discussed how debt finance and tax provides only a narrow outlook and need to widen my horizons. I wouldn’t want to take the risk to show my leadership position, just for the sake of taking the risk when I know I don't possess that leadership ability at present.

Interviewer 1: You mentioned about conflict-management as something you look to develop while at ISB. Wouldn’t you have done that while managing a team at EY?

A: Explained the assignment where I did manage conflict amongst 14 overseas EY partners as a part of the newly set up GCR team at EY. How I convinced them to provide competitive bids in spite of facing opposing views by all the partners.

Quite a few Mumbai calls given out last evening. Will keep coming for another 3-4 days.

All the Best to everyone waiting!

Any idea when the ylp round 1 results are expected to come out?

Want to know about how placements at ISB work? Here is how it all starts:

"Pre-Placement Talks"

Placements are the most highly-discussed, significant and anticipated (with equal portions of stress and excitement) event at any B-School, including the ISB. Placement season usually begins in late November with Day 1, but it is precluded by Pre-Placement Talks (PPTs) which herald the imminent saga of placements.

PPTs are organised by the Career Advancement Council (a student body) in conjunction with Career Advancement Services team (part of the school administration).

Why?

PPTs are sessions held by recruiting companies at the campus (in some instances by tele-presence) to introduce the organisation, it’s culture and the roles being offered (usually) and to allow them to answer questions prospective applicants might have. Simultaneously, it allows recruiters to gauge the interest level of the students and serves as a critical first impression for first-time recruiters.

While most major recruiters conduct PPTs, not every recruiter does so.

Who?

The recruiters are usually represented by the senior management (Principal/Director/VP/Co-Founder) which can often include a few ISB alums, ISB recruits from the last year and an HR personnel.

All students are eligible to attend any PPT and there is no cap on the maximum no. of PPTs one can attend. To ensure attendance at all PPTs across the months, each student is allocated a few PPTs that they are expected to mandatorily attend, which they easily can swap with another classmate if desired.

When?

They are conducted in a phased manner, usually a few weeks before the commencement of the interview process of the company. The first PPTs start as early as late August/September with the frequency picking up as Day 1 draws close, continuing until almost a week before Day 1. Students are usually informed a few days in advance and these are always held outside regular class hours, though there might be two PPTs going on simultaneously in rare instances.

Where?

PPTs are held at both campuses, with several companies sending teams to Hyderabad as well as Mohali, while some companies prefer to connect via video-conference.

What?

The PPT begins with the guests introducing themselves, following which a senior employee usually takes the audience through a slideshow that includes:

· Introduction of the company

· Its major businesses

· Leadership profile

· Geographical coverage

· Organisation structure

· Values and work culture

· Growth areas

Most companies discuss the roles being offered that year with respect to the job description, eligibility, preferred background and experience etc. Companies may or may not reveal the exact CTC at the time.

The slideshow is usually followed by an alum discussing his/her experience and journey at the organisation and may also include his interview process and what helped him/her land the role. The HR personnel may step in to cover any other details.

Post this, the floor is opened for questions, moderated by the campus placement team. Students usually enquire about the job role, eligibility and work environment.

The PPTs usually last between 45mins to 1.5 hours. Almost all companies participate in an informal break-out session outside the venue, where students can engage in free-wheeling one-on-one conversations with the team and network.

How?

There are several ways a prospective applicant can leverage a PPT to his/her advantage.

The most critical is obtaining an understanding of the company and role and assessing his/her personal fit. Once that is established, he/she can use the PPT to ask insightful questions about the organisation to demonstrate interest and knowledge, and network with alums who are usually very helpful when preparing for the process later.

Tip: Researching the team on LinkedIn prior to/during the PPT can immensely help in finding the relevant person to connect with and strike a more fruitful a conversation with them.
