Jeremy,

Regarding the optional essays:
For few schools, you can write additional life experiences or completely different part of your personal aspect that might be of interest to the Admission committee. But, for few schools you should only put extenuating circumstances.
Can you list the schools under these two categories:
A. School that ONLY wants extenuating circumstances listed in the optional essay.
B. School you can put anything for admission committee's interest in your candidature.

Thanks a bunch

As requested....

Cornell (Johnson) Essay Analysis
1. Describe your greatest professional achievement and how you were able to add value to your organization. (400 Words)

This straightforward question creates an opportunity for you to wow the Admissions Committee via your professional life. You should preferably choose a recent experience and should also select one that has had an impact external to you. Many candidates make the mistake of discussing the enduring impact on themselves, likely because they have adapted this essay from another school. In this case however, the second part of the question is not and how it has affected you, but asks for the ramifications for your organization. By thoughtfully discussing your impact on others, you can show a level of magnanimity that Johnson will find appealing.

2. What career do you plan to pursue upon completing the MBA and why? How will the Johnson School help you achieve this goal? (400 Words)

Yet again, because of significant overlap from school to school, we offer our document on personal statements. Please email [email protected] for an electronic copy which will help you approach this essay.

3. Optional Essay

Optional essays are generally reserved for extenuating circumstances in your application. Considering how narrow the Johnson Schools essays are, we occasionally suggest that candidates add relevant information in this section. You should not just cut and paste your best essay from another school, but should consider the particular information that you need Johnson to know about you and then showcase it in a very straightforward way, essentially addressing that this information is vital.

Jeremy,
Could you kindly provide essay review for Cornell-2 year full time?

Hi Jeremy,

I have a question about the ISB 2007 Questions. In particular the question which asks to write a Cover Letter accompanying my CV while applying to my dream job after ISB.

Now, I wish to do an MBA so I can start a tech startup of my own. So my dream job after ISB would not be in a company that I would be 'applying' to. What do you suggest I should write in that essay? Should I explain the situation and elaborate on my plans after ISB (and risk being off-topic), or should I write what I WOULD write IF I were applying for a job after an MBA (and risk being fake)? Which of the two approaches would be more sensible? Please advise.

A big thanks for your time and kudos for the great job you have been doing helping us all!

ISB plans ahead with `Vision 20' ; Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, is in the process...

Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, is in the process of drafting a master plan for itself as it completes 20 years. Christened `Vision 20', the master plan includes expansion proposals that will be implemented in phases, including the opening of a second branch in the country, according to ISB Dean, Prof M Rammohan Rao.

The brainchild of Indian entrepreneurs and deans of Kellogg School of Management, Wharton School, and London Business School, ISB is one of its kind in Asia. It was set up in 2001 with an investment of Rs 230 crore and in a span of five years, has made it to the league of premiere B-schools in India. The school has been a pioneer in the one-year management programme in India which has been embraced by many other premier B-schools in India.

With a vision is to become an internationally top-ranked, research-driven, independent management institution that grooms future leaders for India and the world, Rao told Business Standard that as part of the institute's master plan, the school will start a part-time MBA programme for management and software professionals in Hyderabad within the next one year. It will also start a doctoral programme in management. It will also open two new research centres - a Centre for Strategic Marketing and Centre for Leadership for Change Management - in the next one year.

ISB's long-term plans include ramping up its intake capacity for its one-year management programme from 420 students to 560 students over the next two-three years; increase its faculty intake from 20 to 45 and plans to set up its campus for executive education in northern India. "There is a huge demand for our executive programme. Though the plans to set up an additional campus is in preliminay stage, we might chose north India to reach out to executives who cannot shuttle between Hyderabad and their respective cities," said Rao.

However, ISB does not rule out setting up a campus abroad too. "Right now the school has too much on its plate. We might do have proposals to set up campuses abraod but we would first want to establish ourselves as a world class school in India and then explore opportunities elsewhere," he added.

The institute is also pushing to carry out joint research with Kellogg and Wharton School of Business in the field of management research. Says Rao, "Management research forms the core of our activities. We regularly send our faculty to international conferences and encourage them to take up research activity.

ISB's aspiration to groom tomorrow's leaders is grounded in the belief that leadership skills can be learned and that research can spearhead our operations in to the right direction leading us to our goal of becoming a world-class institute."

Hmm really interesting information Jeremy. Is this somehow relevent to my question? I guess not.. I'm hoping that you will answer my post soon! :)

ESSAY QUESTION 1
Please explain why you are applying to a team-based MBA, what you expect to bring to this program, and what you expect the challenges and rewards of this learning model might be. (500 words)
It seems to me that this question is the most significant; clearly, Queens MBAST believes that they offer a different approach one that is unique to them and they want to be sure that you fit within their culture. You could probably wow them with tremendous accomplishments and ambitious goals in the next two essays, but if you do not show that you truly understand their team concept, your application will not be a success.
An effective response will be one that shows intimate knowledge of their program and shows clear evidence -- based on past successes in team environments and team roles -- that you are predisposed towards teamwork (what you bring to the progam). The emphasis of your essay should be on how you have influenced or even been influenced by teams, more than on your accomplishments within teams. You want to leave the reader with the impression that you are an enlightened team player who influences team success and that you are excited to embrace their distinct approach.
ESSAY QUESTION 2
Please explain your greatest achievement, and why you view it as such. (500 words)
This question is relatively straightforward; depending on your mix of stories from your previous essay, you may consider using an achievement outside of the professional sphere. You dont want these essays to be all work and no play and there should be some variety amid the first two essays. Aside from your story itself, there is an important reflective element contained in the why you view it as such part of the question. By considering your achievements and exploring why they are important to you, you have the ability to differentiate yourself from others, based on your thoughts and experiences.
ESSAY QUESTION 3
Please describe your short-term and long-term career objectives, and how you expect our program to contribute to them. (500 words)
Because of significant overlap from school to school, we offer our document on personal statements. Please email [email protected] for an electronic copy which will help you approach this essay.
Dear Jeremey,
Would you be providing guidance on writing essays for Queens MBAST. If so, kindly provide some pointers to start with.

Thanks for your inquiry.

First of all, as you take a long term view of your application, I recommend checking out a series that is available on our new website:

http://www.mbamission.com/MBALongTermPlanning.asp

Your profile is remarkably strong, with your grades and expected GMAT forming a foundation to support extensive extra-curricular, community, athletic and professional achievements. It seems to me that your only hurdle will be focusing on telling a coherent story that is your own and finding the compelling angles within all of these accomplishments; the admissions committee wants to understand who you are, not just understand that you are accomplished.

All of that written, you have extensive leadership and a tenacity in achieving personal and community goals not to mention a spirit of initiative an entrepreneurship via all of your journalistic endeavors, charitable works (scholarship story), etc. It basically goes on an on You should be a very compelling candidate for a top-7 school.

Thanks for your inquiry.
You clearly have some obstacles in your potential application. Your grades are obviously below average, but are countered by a strong GMAT and CFA which suggest that you have overcome past youthful-indiscretions. Still, a 55% is difficult for an AdCom to overcome. Further, I would suspect that you might have trouble convincing the Adcom that you need your MBA; because you have already earned your MBA and CFA and have successfully managed a transition into finance, you will need to be very clear on your exact reasons for needing this additional educational accelerant. Finally, although your professional accomplishments are impressive, you have limited contemporary community involvement which will again create a relative difference.
In short, I am not sure that your strong professional accomplishments, GMAT and CFA will be enough to overcome these three problem points and allow you to find your place among the top-schools. Of the programs you mentioned, NYU might be a possibility.

Hi Jeremy

I am potential RI / RII applicant to Wharton, Columbia, Chicago & Stern. Could you please assess my profile & let me know whether I need to target some other schools?
29/Male/Indian/Financial Services. I took my GMAT this June & scored 740(50/3. I already have a MBA from India (2001 batch) & have cleared the CFA Level II exam.
I have over 5 years of experience with BASF, GE, Amba Research & am now with Citigroup Global Markets as a sell side associate.
I have been fortunate enough to be a part of a business turnaround story at BASF. At GE...I managed a $60mn budget & helped in reducing the variances. Did a six sigma project. Once I completed the CFA program...I decided to switch careers into equity research & hence joined Amba Research (third party KPO) where I was tracking the German Solar Utilities sector. I am now with Citigroup Global Markets in a leadership position & tracking the Tech & Telecom sector.
I am looking at another MBA to move into Investment Banking (short term) & eventually into Private Equity (Long Term).
I was the president of the students council at my B school & the founder member of the finance club. At BASF, I was the secretary of the receivables council. At GE, I was actively associated with the GE Elfun society & was the leader of a social project. At Citi, I am associated with the Habitat for Humanity.
Looking at Wharton, Chicago, Columbia & Stern.
I have a disastrous UG record. I did my B.Com from Mumbai University & scored a meagre 55%. Would this adversely impact my chances? Would a CFA level II & a good B school academic profile assist in mitigating the bad UG acads?
I dont have any international work ex. I spent 5 months in Atlanta, USA as a part of a training program. Would my lack of international work exp also adversely impact my chances at the mentioned schools?
Please advice.
Thanks
Devang
Nag,

Thanks for your inquiry. In short, dont waste your time taking the GMAT again. A 700 is the benchmark for excellence and you have achieved this benchmark. A 750 will not offer you the same kind of incremental benefit that working on your story will offer you and you present this as an either-or, so choose your essays.

You dont really provide enough of a profile for me to suggest alternative schools, if necessary.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy,

First, truly appreciate ur help on the forum.

I Need your Advice on whether i need to retake the GMAT.
I took my GMAT yesterday and scored 700( Q-49(92 %) and V-35(72 %)).
My average scores in GMATprep and Powerprep were around 750. I screwed badly on real test only due to lack of presence of mind.

I am applying to following schools for fall-2007 all in R2.

1) Tuck
2) Haas
3) Ross
4) Duke
5) Harvard
6) Either Stanford or Wharton.

Interested in strategic consulting in technology and entrepreneurship after
MBA and very keen on applying for fall 2007.

My profile:

B.Tech (CGPA - 6.69/10 and MS in CS (CGPA 7.4/10)from IIIT,Hyd.
Work exp of 3 in prod development in Motorola. Excellent performance all 3 years
Applied for 3 patents in Mobile space with Motorola Technology grp.Patents under persual.
Promoted idea-stage biz plans at TIE-ISB CONNECT.
Extra-curricular - OK
NTSE scholarship holder
Onsite to chicago for 4 months.

The options i have now is to either retake the exam hoping 750+ or go ahead applying with the current score.

What do you advice on this ?

1) Would 750+ make significant difference on the admission compared to 700.
When i spoke to the stanford adcom member at the Stanford meet in Hyd,
he said more or less they are same, it is the quality of essays that is
important.

2) Would my application to above schools with 700 score be competitive
enough ? or Should i consider applying to less ranked schools ?

3) Would quality of essays be impacted if i retake since hardly 2 months left for R2
deadlines ? I dindn't start on any essays yet.

Kindly let me know ur valuable inputs. They wud definitely resolve many of things going currently in my mind.

Thanks n Regards
Nag

Thanks for your inquiry.

For virtually all schools, the optional essay should be used to explain extenuating circumstances poor grades, bad GMAT, unable to ask supervisor for a recommendation, etc. If you are going to use the additional essay to supplement your story, you need to be very brief and offer something vital. You can use this space if there is something that they MUST know about you to truly appreciate your candidacy not just to tell another story. Because Cornell and Yale are so limiting in their essays, we find that these are the two schools where we make exceptions and occasionally suggest that a candidate add a story. This is very much case-dependent.

Can you list the schools under these two categories:

B. School you can put anything for admission committee's interest in your candidature.

Thanks a bunch
Anupam,

I think that this situation offers you a very creative opportunity, one where you can infuse a little bit of humor or lightheartedness as you apply for your dream job with your own start-up. It does not seem reasonable to me that you would change your career goals and express a fake goal just because the question is a bit inflexible. I would approach this essay as you would any other goal statement and go with your entrepreneurial dream. In your letter, you should still discuss your qualifications, why you would be a strong candidate and your passion for the firms mandate. I am sure that this is not the first time that they have encountered this situation and I am sure that they will be appreciative of the fact that you are atypical. I wouldnt lose any sleep over this

Hello Jeremy
This is an update. I am done with submitting R1 applications to H/W/S/K and Chicago. Just received an interview invite from Chicago. Kellogg waived my interview. Waiting to hear from the others.

Hi Jeremy,

I need your advice on my INSEAD app with reagrd to essays.

I want to understand that in which essay I can put information about extra curricular activities e.g. in which essay should I mention about my community service and cultural commitee activities.

There are following essays :

1. strength/weakness (400 words)
2. failure. (250 words)
3. Career goals (500 words)
4. Two accomplishments (400 words)
5. What would you say to a foreigner moving to your home country(250 words)

and two more
1. Job description (250 words)
2. Career progress till date (250 words)

Word limit puts a restriction that I cant talk much about extra activities in last 2 essays. it cant go to #5 or #2.

That leaves me with #1, #3, #4. Can I fit my passion for community service (It is v true. Have been involved with it for last 13 years now)? If I do that, where can also add that I have sit on the core cultural commitee for my office, organising various events, anchoring events (both sports, cultural), street plays, fashion shows?

Please suggest.

Thanks
Ajay

hi Jeremy
Please accept yet another accolade from me for the effort being put in by you.
I have recently been selected for one year Post Graduate Program in Management at IIM, Ahmedabad. However, i want to give a shot at a international school. Here is my profile:
Sex: M
Age: 31
Acads
Class X: 79%
Merit certificate in Mathematics
Certificate in languages
Certificate for scholarship in lieu of monetary scholarship
Class XII: 84%
Graduation: 65% Bachelor of Science (Physics)
Joined Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology for Masters in Computer Application, a 3 year course but left it after one year (scored 72%) to take up a job at State Bank of Hyderabad, one of the associates of State Bank of India.
GMAT: 730 (Q-49, V-40, AWA 5.5)
Others:
Certificate courses from NSE (NCFM) in Debt and Basic Securities;
Certificate program on valuation of shares;
Workshop on fixed income research.
The Job
Have put in over 8 years in job in a bank in the following fields:
1. Credit Management: Managed credit in two main branches of the bank: Overseas Branch Mumbai and Industrial Finance Branch Delhi managing credit desk of over Rs.100 crores ($ 20 mn) for 3 years.
No. of people I managed - 3
2. Treasury Management: (for last 3 years) Roles include - MIS, research of equity and debt (portfolio size $ 3 bn), Mid-Office functions involving risk measurement and management including periodical Top management reporting on investment particulars.
No. of people I manage - 2
Major experiences/Unique identifiers - worked in rural areas of interior districts of India as a banker and came close to many facts of a developing country and its pitfalls - a couple of them emotional and arising an ethical situation. This was followed by a contrasting work experience in very modern and tech savy department like treasury department besides top branches in metro cities of Mumbai & Delhi catering to corporate clients. Thus i have, during my 8 years as a banker, interacted with customers ranging from farmers, artisans, corporate, market makers in the indian financial scenarios.
Currently pursuing masters in finance(MFM) part-time from Mumbai University which gets over in May 2007.
Extra curr
Singing. A couple of awards for it.
My concerns:
B-schools in US prefer a 10+2+4 years education background, while mine is 10+2+3, discounting to zero my one year of incomplete MCA. Will the US B-schools consider my 10+2+3 years education as eligible to apply? Will my MFM cover this requirement?
I don't think i have involved myself in community service in a way that merits a mention. How weak does that make me?
I have shortlisted Cranfield, Cambridge, Oxford and INSEAD in Europe/Aisa as one-year program and Stanford, Tuck, Columbia and Duke in US for 2-year program though i am more inclined towards a 2-year program as it won't be as strenous as a one year program is.
My one main reason to do mba is to have a global perspective as i see myself as an entrepreneur in 10 years from now.
Would like to know if i am proceeding realistically?
Thank you.
