Hi Jeremy,

We will appreciate if you can analyze the application essays of NUS(Singapore). These are the questions:

1. How will an NUS MBA help you fulfill your career ambition?

2. What are you passionate about? How will your fellow students benefit from this passion?

3. Your organisation is facing a major crisis, and you are tasked to write to your poorest performing staff. Please draft the letter.

Thanks,
Stigmatic

Hello Jeremy,
Hope you remember me from our earlier conversations. My Chicago interview went on well. Waiting eagerly for Dec 20.

Kellogg, which had earlier waived the alumni interview because of heavy volume, has now invited me for a Telephonic interview. I am trying to find out information regarding the same and unfortunately, i am not able to find much about it. If you can provide any info/pointers about Kellogg's telephonic interviews, it would be of great help. The interview is scheduled for Monday evening (IST).

thanks,
Iday

Hi Jeremy,
Need some input for school choices.

I am from a scientific background....have a masters degree from IIT Madras in India and a Phd from a Max Planck i germany (wud have one soon).

I plan to work for 2 or 3 years before I hit B school, bt giving my GMAT next week.
I want to know more about schools that have a track record for accepting people with a background such as mine.

The schools that I aim for are as follows

INSEAD : Dream School, 1 year, Europe, reputed

Queens and Cornell : Found evidence of several students with PhD being accepted there. Feel I can fit well with their crowd of tech intensive students.

Purdue: high acceptance rates (according to BW) and again focus on technology.

ISB : home sweet home

I would like to hear your thoughts on my school choice and please suggest any other schools that come to your mind.

Thanks
Dev

Hello Jeremy,

Just wanna share the good news that i got an admit from Chicago GSB in the class of 2009. I received the famous phone call today evening by about 8:20 PM IST.

I take this moment to thank you for all the help you had offered during the initial stages of the process. Can't thank you enough :)

Iday

Keya,
No problem on the early morning/late night call thanks for the sensitivity to the situation though.
I think that your stories are fine, but the accomplishments themselves dont really standout. Still, the wow factor can come from the interpersonal side of the equation. In essay one, it is not the life cycle project itself that is impressive, but the fact that a simple idea took hold and became a major learning point for others and that you lead this initiative. The cumbersome details ("I first worked on it myself, making a huge Level 1 Data Flow + Process Flow diagram which showed the entire necessary transactions at a glance, and then put all the other transactions into Policy Life transactions, and Policy Termination transactions. I then went on to build separate diagrams for each set of transactions Loans, Surrenders, Waivers and Benefits, Reports etc.") of putting together the project are not nearly as important as how you got others to share your vision and then implemented. The human sides of stories are often far more compelling than the tangible accomplishments themselves.

Jeremy Shinewald

Hello Jeremy,

I'm posting on your thread after a long while... to say thank you!! I just received a call from the Adcom at Chicago GSB, confirming my admission into the class of 2009.
I had applied only to Chicago and Tuck in R1. I also have an Interview invite from Tuck.

I wanted to thank you because your advice, both generic, as well as specific helped me majorly while writing out my essays. While I was writing the essays, I had a print out of your Chicago specific advice in front of me.. I also took care to emphasize the 'intangibles' rather than the 'tangibles' as you adviced here.

So thank you once again. I'm sure all the aspirants you have helped through your thread here feel the same.

Regards
Keya

Hi Jeremy,

I have been WAITLISTED at Chicago GSB.

I was expecting a ding as my interview was pretty so-so.

Vinod - I am sure Jeremy would respond to your queries. I just could not stop remarking that you have an extremely interesting profile and if you are able to spin the story well in your essays you should be able to get an admit from the top bschools - H/W/S.

If you are looking at 1-year program, apart from INSEAD, also consider IMD Switzerland.

All the best !

Hi Jeremy,
I thank you for all the patience and the hard work that you have been putting in helping prospective B-school graduates. I have a few questions about my candidature for MBA.
Ive a typical run of the mill profile of a Indian-IT male, want to take your advise on how to improve the odds.
I am a 2004 graduate of BITS Pilani (one of the top 5 institutes in India) and currently have 2.5 years of experience as a CRM consultant in one of the BIG 4 of IT companies. Im planning to apply for fall-2008(I will have 4 years of exp+. 6 months of internship) which includes one year in Australia.
Ive had a steep learning curve from a Software Engineer a couple of years ago to managing a project team of 15 people now. Im the onsite coordinator, here in Sydney for my team in India. Though Im a software engineer, Ive been exposed to managing the client and the team simultaneously and my role currently is purely of a Manager with the client. Ive also had a hand in making proposals and winning a couple of small projects for my company.
On the academic front here are the details
10th Grade---90%
12th-Pre-University94.2%, a State ranker.
Graduation8.4/10., Mechanical Engineering with Chemistry as a dual degree.
My graduation has been a unique combination of core sciences of mechanical engineering and the intricacies of chemistry. On one side, Ive researched and published papers in complex multivariate algorithms in the area of Supply chain Management and on the other side researched and synthesized nano powders in the field of nano technology
Ive had a good share of extra-curricular activities, I represented my university in Cricket and Hockey .I was the coordinator of An All India Technical festival held in my university and had a big role in winning grand prizes. I was also involved in a entrepreneurial start up company with my friends, albeit at an abstract level. Im still a active member of the company on a voluntary basis though. The only thing I havent done is community service at a higher magnitude, though I did have a couple of stints with CRY India and NSS Pilani, and AID Bangalore.
Im sure and confident that I will fare well in my GMAT which Im to take in the next couple of months.
Here are the points; I feel I can sell about my profile
Experience in niche area of CRM consulting and add to it the packages Ive worked on
Rapid growth from a Software Engineer to a Team Leader managing 15 people. International experience in a niche market like Australia and client exposure to emerging markets like Singapore, Malaysia and NZ.
Very good academics since high school and a good GMAT (710-730 range).
Entrepreneurial stint and the role in shaping the company Ive to glorify this a lot more.
Leadership skills in managing a team of 45 in the ALL INDIA festival.
Extra curricular activities, represented university at the highest level.
My questions to you are:
What are the areas I should improve and how?
Do you think I have a good chance at the likes of UNC, GSB, UT-Austin, UCLA, Tuck, Smith, MIT, UCB, LBS, INSEAD I would like to stress on Insead, LBS, UNC,GSB. Im being realistic and know Im no good for W/H/K/C.
Also, the most important question, I would like to major in marketing, strategy and consulting. Are there schools which offer this? And can I justify my application by stating that Ive had a versatile profile of being a mechanical engineer, to interning as an industrial engineer to working as a software engineer, to a CRM consultant.

hi Jeremy

pls accept my compliments and thanks on your excellent inputs in this forum. I have gained so many vital insights by just being a silent reader here.

I have some specific ques for you, however first here is my profile

Sex : M Age : 30

Acads
Engineer from a top college - 66%
XII - 66%, X - 83%
Merit certificate by CBSE for being in top 0.01 percentile in science.
Merit based Scholarship in Engineering degree for topping the class.

GMAT - 700 (Q47 V40)

Work-Ex
- 7 years of experience in IT field including 4.5 years of international experience in U.K. and few months in Japan, Switzerland and HongKong.
- Worked extensively as an external consultant with one of the fortune 100 investment bank.
- Rich experience in global interest-rate derivative trading platform.
- Handled project for automating fixed-income security operations for national Stock Exchange of XXX (sorry cannot reveal name of the country)
- Currently Head, Center of Excellence for application certification.

Extra Curricular
- Extensive experience in acting and directing street plays.
- Important performer in travelling performace troupe (street plays) when in school as part of adult literacy campaign in villages.

Recos
I will be able to get strong recos both from my supervisor and client(Manager at fortune 100 bank for which i worked as consultant).

I am aiming to build a career focussed more on EU and Asia-PAC region than in the U.S. (mostly because of my experience). In short-term I see myself as a consultant in techno-financial domain and in the long-term i aim to start a company of my own.

I have already submitted my app for INSEAD in R2.

Keeping above in mind, which US/European schools with strong international focus do you think i have decent chance at? Do keep in mind that even if I choose to study at a US school, i will be more interested in non-US specific jobs.

As of now I am thinking about INSEAD, Michigan(Ross), Tuck and CMU(Tepper). I haven't been able to make up my mind either way about IMD and LBS. I must admit that my reservation about LBS, IMD arises from lack of sufficient info about these schools when compared to US schools. How will i be able to justify "Why LBS" type of ques, given my lack of insight into these schools. Will you be able to point me to some useful resources in this regard?

One part of my application where i see a clear weakness i my lack of extra curricular and social work ever since i started my job. Is there any strategy to offset this?

Lastly do you think I will be able to wave off TOEFL requirement because my univ degree was in english and also because I worked with a well known investment bank in U.K. for more than 4 yearas

Many thanks in advance

nixbert

Well, after a very busy season and thus a biref hiatus, I am back in action on these boards. I expect to be available quite regularly until the heat of the next busy season hits. In the day or two, I hope to catch up on everyones questions and would, of course, be happy to answer many more.

Sripada,

Thanks for your inquiry. It is difficult to judge your chances, considering that I know very little about your academics, extra-curriculars, community involvements, personal accomplishments, etc. Still, your age, could be a hindrance to finding a place among top-U.S. business schools, particularly if you come from a typical background. Have you considered Executive MBA programs?

Dear Jeremy,

I will give a brief details about myself and need your opinion on this.

Age 35, 10+ IT Experience (Japan, Europe exp of 6+ years). I am leading team size of 25 now and handled positions like Project Manager, Customer Engagement Manager etc.

I want to do full time MBA in international management (with focus on Global Supply chain management and then gradually move the value chain in Manufacturing industry in India) for switch in my career.

When I approached IMD in Switzerland, they said my chances are very slim for full time MBA.

So, I want your views on how do you see my chances of getting admission into top Business schools in US. Are the chances very slim for full time MBA? There is no way I can plan for switch in my career at this stage?

Yet to take GMAT. Planning to take in March 2007. (You can expect around 680)

Regards,
Sripada
Silas,

Thanks for your inquiry.

I dont think that your essay will destroy your application, but it certainly would have been better had you been more constructive and diplomatic.

Each week, we post a Monday Morning Essay Tip; a few weeks back, we discussed candor and in a self-effacing kind of way: http://www.mbamission.com/Blog_Specific.asp?ID=214

Still, the rule holds true when discussing others. There is nothing wrong with honesty, but you want to be constructive, not petulant.

While i was writing a essay which asked about why MBA type of question. I think i have made a mistake. I just want to make know how huge this is.

I wrote something to the effect that my previous managers have not been so great and i had hoped that they had done a better job. I also wrote that some lacked aptitude and some lacked training and they followed management practices blindly while i tried to understand its gist and then customized and improved the processes and stuff.

Now this is a small part of my essay, but looking back I worry how this will be percieved. I wrote what i truly felt from my experiences but .......

Anyways, i have submitted the form already so I can't change anything. I just wonder how will this affect by application.

Can one below average essay or a slip destroy the application?

Welcome Back Jeremy !! 😃

Hi jeremy,
Your response to sripada's question got me a little worried. The cause of my worry is the age factor. what do you reckon are my chances in getting through any of the top BSchools. Following is my profile

-Age: 32
-Work Ex: 11 years
-Acads: B.Sc(Comp Sc) Delhi University, India
X-80%, XII- 75, Graduation: 70%
-Worked for a pharma MNC for 3.5 years (marketing),
Software development - 4 years
Project management: 3 years,
program management: 1 year
-International exp: working in europe for last 6+ years. Leading teams located at multiple geographical locations across europe.
-GMAT: 710
-Associated with an NGO in europe.
-Have been constantly upgrading myself with certifications like IT certifications and PMP.
-languages: English, Hindi, German.

I really really want to work with one of the top tier consulting firms. I think an MBA from a top school is the only way to get there as it will provide me the necessary knowledge and impetus.

My dream schools are INSEAD and IMD. I would like to start in jan 2008.

Please let me know
1. Wheather I stand a realistic chance in INSEAD or IMD.
2. What can I do to improve my chances.
3. Considering my interest in consulting, what other BSchools would be a good option for me.

Please help me out. Looking forward to your advice.
cheers
jiggz

Thanks for your inquiry.

From what you have offered, it seems to me that you are facing an uphill battle for top-schools; you have jumped around a fair amount in your short career and have limited extra-curriculars/community activities. Please take a look at our Long Term Planning section on our website, so that you can learn about quickly advancing personal and extra-curricular profiles.

http://www.mbamission.com/MBALongTermPlanning.asp

To answer your questions:

1) You should try to score as high as possible, but even a 750 is not a magic solution. Schools are looking for a lot more than a strong GMAT score.
2) As I wrote, you should definitely work on your community/personal profiles; dont change jobs again.
3) It is difficult to advise without your GMAT, but you might look at the Simon School and if you obliterate the GMAT and have some strong community accomplishments in the short term, you might look at NYU Stern.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy,

I need you invaluable advice on my chances of getting into the Top B schools.

First of all, let me introduce my profile to you.

Class Xth 74.6
Class XIIth 77.2

B. Tech ( IIT Delhi) , CGPA of 7.42/10. (passed out in 2004)

I was department rank 7 out of a batch strength of around 40.

I do not have any great extra curriculars ( only got certificates in school in quizzes and sports). Just did Social service as a part of curriculum in IIT (had to complete 200 hours of NSS actvities)

Managed few Math olympiad certificates in Xth and XIIth.

I have around 2 years of work ex right now and I plan to apply in 2007 (September /October) which means I will have a work ex of more than 3 and a half years when I join B School.

Work Ex

I worked for around 5 months in a KPO (data analysis). Did not get satisfaction.
Then got in to a core market research firm and worked there for 1 year and learnt a lot, handled a lot of clients over there. Left that job too for more learning as I was getting saturated over there. So joined another growing market research firm to have some more exposure on business development/ client handling and still working there for 6 months now.

Q1 I am yet to take GMAT now. (What should be an ideal score to strengthen my chances???)

Q2 What else do you feel I lack and should work upon in the given time frame to make my profile the best???

Q3 I think I love finance and want to go for it. Which best schools I shall apply to???

Please give me your kindly help and advice asI am eagerly waiting to listen from you.
I am very dedicated towards my goal of pursuing an MBA .

So please be brutally frank on the critical assessment of my profile and advices.

Thanks.

Dear Jeremy:

I have already posted this profile at the "Ivey MBA 2008" thread though I believe it was not posted in the best place. Anyways, I have been thoroughly researching 1 year MBAs around the world and have decided to apply to 5-6. These schools - in order of preference - are Ivey-UWO, Judge-Cambridge, Said-Oxford, INSEAD, Instituto de Empresa and ISB. There are lots of threads for the last 5 but Ivey threads are scarce. So why Ivey?

1 year MBA
Case study method (I love this approach)
Excellent job prospects in Management Consulting (my future career choice)
Good value for money
Excellent reputation in Canada and increasing presence in Asia and Latin America.
Consistently ranked in the top 30 programs globally
Small class size (more contact with professors and students)
London, Ontario is small enough to provide a strong learning environment, and very close to Toronto and Detroit.

Profile

Peruvian citizen, 31 years old.
Academic background
BVSc and Licenciado in Veterinary Medicine from Universidad Mayor (Chile). This university is ranked top 3 nationwide among private institutions. Got a 5.5 out of 7 (3.16 GPA), Top 10% of my class (140 students)

Diploma in Financial Administration from ITESM (Mexico). ITESM is the leading business school in Latin America. Got 95 out of 100.

MSc in Development Studies from Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand). Awarded a full NZAID Scholarship (Govt. of NZ, only 10 scholarships for the whole Latin American & Caribean Region) . Got an A- final grade (A+ highest).

MSc in Political Science - Public Policy track at Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP). PUCP is the top Peruvian university. Finished coursework, already working on my thesis. Degree completion expected July 2007. Graded 14 out of 20, very good marks form Peruvian standards. Studied while working PT and FT.

Additional qualifications

Certificate in Entrepreneurship Development from Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDIIndia), Ahmedabad, India. Awarded a full ITEC Scholarhip (Govt. of India) . Stayed for 2 months and visited Dehli, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Agra (Taj Mahal can only be compared with Macchu Picchu!).

Other small certificates in bovine biotechnology and stock markets (yeah, sure, I love diversity!)

Work experience

Currently working for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as an Avian Influenza Project Consultant for the Andean Region (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru). 1 year assignment

Short term consultant (2 weeks) for the World Bank. Reviewed, amended and submitted a US$19.4 MM project on behalf of the Peruvian Trust Fund for National Parks and Protected Areas (PROFONANPE) towards the creation of the new Peruvian System of Natural Protected Areas.

Consultant for the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Developed a US$1.95 MM project in environmental financing on behalf of the Latin American & Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC) (4 months + 2 months follow up).

English and Spanish teacher for Berlitz and British-Peruvian Cultural Assoc. Taught at Diplomatic Academy of Peru, Embassy of Canada and top companies in Peru. (1.5 years). This was a harsh period, I was underemployed - no jobs in Peru during those years. However I feel very proud cuz I performed at the highest level and was permanently ranked as best teacher by customer feedback.

Research Assistant for an Inter-American Development Bank project in Risk Disaster Management. 6 months.

CARE (Not for profit global institution), Consultant (6 months) for a Livestock Development project in rural Peru. Developed an artificial insemination strategy to improve dairy production of peasants.

Relevant Internship
Embassy of Peru to New Zealand, Foreign and Development Policy Analyst (1 year). Prepared fortnight foreign policy papers submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru about New Zealand and Pacific Island States issues. Provided direct advise to the ambassador on a wide range of topics.

I scored 8/9 on the Academic IELTS (270+ TOEFL?)

Have never taken the GMAT, will do so in August and October (if first score is pathetic). I believe my score(s) will range from 550 to 650. I dont expect more (worst case scenario, consider a 550 GMAT).

I will get amazing references (one from a client, another from a supervisor)

Most of my professional experience has been as a project consultant. I have visited, studied and worked in countries/regions such as Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, US, Europe, India and New Zealand.

Teaching Experience

University Lecturer at Universidad San Martin de Porres, Lima since August 2006 up to date. I teach a social science course entitled "National Reality" for engineering undergrad students. My course was assessed as outstanding by the universitys academic office and will become a core course in March 2007.

University Tutor at Victoria University of Wellington, NZ. I tutored geography and social science students in the course "Development in the Asia-Pacific Basin". Taught social development issues with a focus on APEC Latin American countries.

Why MBA? Because I want to have increased choice in my career direction. Additionally, I want to frame up my previous experience and skills with a practical degree. Business development and top-notch management skills are critical for the promotion of social, economic, political, environmental and even cultural development of nations. Of course, this is a very (I mean very) brief and simple statement but it basically contains my main motivations.

Hope to find a reply. Thank you!

Disclaimer:

You might have checked out that my grades for the Bachelors degree in France (first stage) were quite low. I can explain this. When graduating from Chile, I topped my class and won the right for direct admission at a French university. By the time I arrived to France, I had only studied French language for 8 months (classes only on Saturdays, 4 hour sessions). My language skills were poor for an academic environment. Although I had considered not attending Toulouse Univ. due to language limitations, I decided to take this wonderfull opportunity and took the risk. My first year performance was not so good but not so bad either. However, you can also check out that my second year grades showed a very decent increase. Not only that; by the time I returned back to Peru, my French skills were near native! (6 out of 6 on speaking proficiency, TEF certificate, french govt. 2005).

I also want to add that I am expecting a less than great GMAT score. My realistic range spans from 500-600 and plan to take it in August 2007. I am intending to apply only to Canadian MBA programs for 2008 admission, namely (in order of preference); Ivey, Sauder and Queens.

Why MBA? I want to gain a broad based management training given that Hotel Mgmt is quite restricted and restrictive for faster career progression. Thank you very much for your time and attention. I truly appreciate it.

Greetings from Peru
