Ask Jeremy @ MBAMission.com - What it takes to get to the best global business school

Thanks for your inquiry.

The name of the company you work for is not nearly as important as the work that you are doing. If you are not being challenged, you will have not story to tell and no school will be impressed by a guy who sat still for a few years doing nothing, waiting for high-profile work. My suggestion is that you move on; this is probably a good choice regardless of your school plans.

Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy

Thank you for all the vital info tht u are sharing.

I'm currenlty working in an IT company in India (which has a global brand name in consulting and IT). It has been just over a year since I joined this firm directly from a top ten engineering college. But over the past year the work here has been minimal, and I have mostly spent my time on "bench" (as a reserve resource for future projects).

I have a chance to make a shift from this (mostly technical) job to another firm (govt firm) where I will be getting alot of managerial work ex (i will be absorbed as a management trainee). How much does the job profile matter over the brand name of the firm one is working for? Do top b-schools prefer people from well known brand name organizations? Will working for a less reknowed company jeopardize my chances of getting thorugh a top -school?
Thank you for your inquiry.

I was having some difficulty gauging your work experience, but your first of its kind promotion certainly helps you distinguish yourself. What is truly interesting though is your passion for literature and your desire to establish a community and business centering around those with a similar passion. I would suggest that that if you can achieve your goals which sound rather ambitious this should be a remarkable differentiator among your peer applicants.

I have attached a link to our long term planning section on our website, as you still have significant time to prep. Aside form getting the GMAT out of the way, you can visit classes and advance personal goals.

I know that this is a big if, but if you can get your site off the ground, I would have confidence that you will find a place among the top-10 schools.

Hello Jeremy,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for wonderful job you are doing at PG.

Please go through my profile and let me know if I stand any chances of making it to Top 20 US B-schools

My Background:

* Excellent Academic background
88% in my 10th class, 95% in class 12th and 83% in my undergraduation (missed the university rank by 0.5%)

* Engineering graduate(2004 Pass out) in Information Technology.

* Right out of the college I was recruited by Indian IT major company. Stayed there for less time (5 months - I have strong reasons to explain 'why' - in my essays)

* Joined US IT/Telecom major company as s software developer.

Current status/Progress in near future:

* Till date have been working on flagship products of the company with globally spread out team. So have good experience of interacting with people around the globe.

* Will be making a move to 'Pre-sales' team of the company focusing on Asia-Pacific sales, as a 'Technical Marketing Consultant'. I am the youngest and the first non-MBA employee to be promoted to this role in my organization.

* Will be applying for B-schools only in 2008 (after completing 4 years exp)

* Will be taking GMAT in 2 months and I have the confidence to pull off a 700+ score.

Extra-Curricular:

* Have setup my own online forum dedicated to bibliophiles. Working on it to build it up as India's No. 1 information portal/establishment on Books, Authors, Bookshops in India. Currently I am talking to authors, publishers and retail book dealers to setup a common information/promotional platform for books. Few online bookseller giants have approached me for partnership b/w their site and my forum. (My post MBA plans are also inclined towards publishing media)

* Chess is my passion and have won few certificates in 'Rapid chess tourneys'. Represented college chess team at university level.

* Avid musician (Have passed exam in a musical instrument) and I continue to pursue it till date

Community Service:

* Animal activist

* Opening up a community service wing of my online forum to instill the reading habits/musical interest in children.

I still have 1.5 years to build up my profile. So please let me know my chances of making it to top 20 US B schools. Also, if you can spot out any loopholes/weak points that I can work on, it would be really helpful.
Appreciate your efforts.
Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate your warm remarks.

Nice thread!
Will help a lot of students.

Thanks mods.
Thank you for your inquiry.

It seems to me that you should complete your MBA in India. Traditionally, because US MBAs are so expensive, Indian MBAs stay in the US for a few years after graduation; you want to work for an Indian company after your MBA immediately why take that risk? Further, you have a healthy skepticism of the risks entailed, so again, why pursue it?

hi jeremy

i wish to know

1) is there any distinct advantage of doing an mba from a global top 20 bskool over say IIM A or B?

2) is doing an mba in say the USA gonna make it impossible for me to come back and work in india? (assuming that i have family responsibilities and that i'd like to get back to india asap) I've heard that indian companies dont value mbas done abroad.

3) will it be tough for me to put to practice mba knowledge from one country (say USA from a top b school) for a company in another country (say india)?

4) will it be that only foreign companies established in india would employ me if i want to work in india after having done an mba abroad?

5) abt the money factor, do b schools abroad ever offer any fees aid?

i know these sound like juvenile queries but i really need these answers bcos these things do confuse me a lot.

Thanks for your inquiry.

In order to answer your question, I will need more details. You have provided a pretty generic work history and I have no idea what you did with regard to social service. as I tell my candidates all the time: Details make the story come alive!

and i also have entrepreneurial ideas for the future

so based on this wat are the schools that u wud recommend to me....(gen management/SC) ..and i also want to kno whether having an earlier pgdbm wud be detrimental to my admission chances.....tho i have a strong reason for pursuing this second mba (want to do it only from the top 10 in the world)

pls guide me thru this
thanx in advance
Thank you for your inquiry.

I am not clear on what exactly makes you different from the majority of tech candidates. You seem to have your work experience and that is all. You will probably find it quite challenging to crack the top-15. If I were you, unless there is something that I am missing, I would consider 15-20 to be competitive and 10-15 as a reach. As for a TOEFL waiver, this tends to vary from school to school. You will have to inquire with each.

I am not sure if I can give you truly insightful advice, as I deal almost exclusively with Indians applying to North American and European schools.

I admit that I dont know all that much about ISB, but would guess that if you have experience in Hong Kong and in an industry that is somewhat unusual, you have the foundation of a solid application. If I were you, I would contact alumni of the ISB and discuss your profile with them. You should also attend ISB outreach events in your area.

My name is Sitanshu. I am 23 years old and am from Mumbai. I want to do MBA (specifically a twelve month program) So i thought ISB would be a nice school to do it from. Can you have look at my profile and tell me my chances
10th 86%
12th 64%
Ty B.Com 71% (not too many people get this)
GMAT 660
Cleared M.Com Part 1
I am involved in our family business for which i stay in Hong Kong since the past two years.I handle all our operations in Hong Kong such as ,sales, general administration, sometimes even sourcing from the local market, etc. I have two years of full time work experience, and three years part time work experience. I guess i am bracketed in Entrepreneur, so i will not be competing head to head to with all you IT professionals. Hey do you think do you think my position would be better, in case i convince ISB that i would not be looking for placement post graduation , as i would continue with the family business.
Thanks for your inquiry.

Your GMAT score will remain in place for five years, but, that written, it is generally best to take it within two years of applying. That is a general rule if you are a mathlete then you may have other data points that give credence to a high-score that was gained years earlier.

In terms of work experience, Stanford and Harvard are on a youth kick with HBS in particular accepting students right out of undergrad or deferring acceptances for undergrad applicants. They claim that there is no right age, only a right time

Dear Jeremy,

First of all, a big thanks for participating in this initiative, Hope to benefit as much as I can from this thread.

I may be far too early in posting this..I am about to complete my Bachelors in Engineering & haven't written GMAT yet.. Am gonna take up an overseas offer in UAE this summer & wish to apply for all the top international B-Schools (Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, Stanford, Chicago etc etc) with decent work-ex (lets say 3 years+).
  1. I wanted to know when would be the best time to take the GMAT test..?? As in..do the top B-schools have anything against good GMAT scores which were achieved, say 2-3 years before applying..or does a good GMAT score retain its worth for as long as it stays valid..??
  2. What is the least amount of work-ex which would give me a fair (to be interpreted as "sufficient") chance at getting admission into a premier B-school..??
My Background:
10th : 91.2 %
12th : 95.9 %
Bachelors (B.Tech in NIT Trichy) : CGPA of 9.43 (/10)

Thanks in advance
Thanks for your inquiry.

As a female candidate with a sky-high GMAT and work in an untraditional field, not to mention CFA credit and interesting extra-curriculars, you should be in fine shape for INSEAD in R2. While you might be able to improve here and there (who cant?) I think that you should be confident in just applying. I would target top-7 schools in the US as well.

Because your prior work experience is so blue-chip, Oracle will not detract from your overall profile. The banking clearly sets you apart and while I am not a big believer in GMAT scores, a 780 is something that will get you noticed. Zero community service will be a hindrance though. You are a pretty paradoxical candidate I would not swear off W and Ch; Col because of their pathetic love of the GMAT should be realistic. Tuck and Stern should be in reach. You might consider MIT as well, as they have a heavily quantitative finance program.

Could you please let me know what classes are you referring to?

Thanks once again for all your efforts!
Thanks for your latest inquiry.

When I mentioned that you can visit classes, what I meant is that if you happen to be in the US on business or if you are traveling for leisure, you can visit the schools in the area and sit on classes. By visiting classes now, you will have a better understanding of the b-school environment and internalize it, meaning that you will be more comfortable writing essays and interviewing. Further, you will have a sincere and abiding interest with a respective school, as you will be able to show that your interest was developed years before.

Hi,
Its really very nice for you to help us prospective students. Please find below some queries.

I am an Indian male who works in the IT space. I want to complete an MBA from the top schools.

Experience:
I have been working with a top ranked IT company for the last 20 months. The last 2 months has been in the US as an ONC for a new project and I think I will be here for quite sometime. So by the time I apply I would have a work ex of 2 years of which 6 months will be the much glorified Onsite experience.

GMAT SCORE: 690/800 (currently preparing to give another shot)
TOEFL: 297/300
  1. What would be the top schools for Entrepreneurship and also which ones would be the best ones wrt to IT Management? Currently I cant still decide if I want to join my dad and help him with his business post my MBA or I want to get back into the IT sector as all my work ex pre MBA is IT. Will it matter in anyway if I decide one thing now and then change my mind during the course.
  1. My work responsibilities have always been way ahead of my peer groups and because of that I have got numerous thank you awards and my performance rating has always been in the top 5% of the company.

  1. My extracurricular activities include social service. I have been instrumental in forming this club of college friends and mainly running it for the last 1 year which helps 2 NGOs both financially and personally. Right now we are looking to take this at a much higher level as most of us are across the globe.
  1. In addition, I am particularly interested in the finance world. I have give lectures at an investment class on investments and stocks and mutual funds in particular as I personally think that this awareness in the new generation is almost non-existent. I have also introduced the batch of new joinees (freshers) in my office to basic personal finance and continue to do so amongst my friend circles. Its more like they come to me for financial decision making. What would you suggest I do to leverage this interest in the stock markets?
My current responsibility at job is somewhat really unique where I have to interact with the Business users analyze their requirements and convert that into technical requirements so that we can develop an entire system. Getting all the work done from the team in India is my responsibility. In some ways I am at the centre of things. The project is a flagship project and is worth Millions of dollars and aims to save a lot of money for the project sponsors. Its a very unique position and I was chosen amongst a pool of people almost all of whom had more experience then me. Could you please suggest a strategy for this in the essays?

With my profile which are the schools that I have a realistic chance of attending with my assuming I score a 720 on the GMAT when I take it next month?
Also which would be the schools that are particularly young applicant friendly.

I would be really thankful if you could find time to answer these queries. Sorry the list kind of ran long.

Cheers,
Maverick
Thanks for your inquiry.

It never feels good to be blunt, but it is part of my job. I think that your top-schools are going to be very challenging for you and even some of your second tier will give you some trouble.

Unless I am mistaken and please correct me if I am you seem to have advanced only one tier in your many years in sales. Maybe you can explain some of your accomplishments in this area, but I am curious about your career progress. This, coupled with your age, your relatively low GPA, lack of recent community service and the competitiveness of your peers, makes me concerned about your chances, everywhere but UNC, USC, Emory and Indiana.

Please fill me in if I am off-base.

performed rather well in IBM and rose quickly to leadership position as in..switched from software development to managing people.. ( have loads of appreciation certifiactes.) but then Schlumberger happened and I decided to go for it mainly because of lucre and also because i was bored of the software profile.

here in Schlumberger, my work comprises ...going to the rig site...ensuring the smooth drilling operation...( by which I want to emphasise..the kind of human interaction...dealing with the client...labours etc) etc..

HI,

Would be great if you could share some thoughts on my apping,

Here is my profile:

Experience - 4 years (shud be 5 when i join)
2+ years in one of the TOP MNC ( Technology sector), now with a renowned Investment bank (analyst + technology )

GMAT - 700 (85+ % in both sections)

Education - pretty decent acads - schooling (90%, 95%) ,college (84%) - close to 3.5 in GPA terms i think.

Extra curriculars
Ok types - have some leadership experience to show as well.

Community service
Ok types, involved in corporate initiatives - though not any member of NGO.

Planning to apply to Wharton,Stanford, Haas,Tepper, sloan and yale. Let me know what you think of the direction and would be great if you share some insights in what wud be the chances of getting an admit with the above said profile.

Thanks for your inquiry.

You asked whether it would matter if you ended up working in a different field than what you propose via your essays. The answer: definitely not. You want to show that you have thought through your goals and that you have a clear vision for yourself and your career, but the school will not and cannot hold you to those goals. Your MBA is designed to introduce you to new thoughts and experiences and the school would undermine its own purpose if it took such a rigid approach.

I think that you are a bit confused about your path you discuss IT, a family business and finance. You should definitely clarify your path and try to determine which story you can truly own. You will not make much of an impression on the adcom is you are all over the place. Further, offering colleagues financial advice is not a story in itself; think of everything in terms of a concrete story each story needs a beginning, middle and end. Where is the drama? Where is the impact that you had in these situations? Where is the difference you made, both financially and personally? Similarly, the fact that you manage an important product is not relevant until you put the story into action. How have you influenced its development? What is the story behind why you were chosen?

Your social services seems quite interesting and the fact that you have global ambitions is quite impressive. This should be a differentiator for you. However, the rest of your candidacy is quite vague. With a 720, assuming that your product experience is quite strong in reality and that you have had tangible success with your NGO, I think that you could look to schools in the 8-15 range. Still, you are not that clear on the results of your endeavors, so I would need more details on your background.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Cheers,
Maverick
