Hi Jeremy

Firstly I really appreciate your work for the PG students like us. I wanted to know about the colleges where I can apply if I want to go for a ONE year MBA course.

My profile is as below:
1) Computer Engineer from a reputed college in India - 73% ~ 3.4 GPA
2) GMAT - expecting 720+ planning to give this December
3) Extracurricular - was actively involved in sports in college and school. Have represented my school and College Athletics team to various inter school events
4) Community Service - involved at home.
5) Work Experience - About 4.5 years by December '08. Worked in an MNC India (working as Technical Leader) and them moved to US for work. About 2 yrs work experience in US. The entire experience in the finance and banking domain. Currently working for a reputed bank in US as a consultant.

Now the help I need from you, the colleges in US where all I can apply with my profile. Also I will require sponsorship for my studies. I am planning to join the 09 batch. If possible suggest me whether with this profile should I go for a ONE year program or take the TWO year program itself. I am looking for reputed institute though.

I am eagerly waiting for your response on the same.

Thanks
Ankit
Thank you for your inquiry. A 700 is generally a safe score, but anything higher is of course welcome. I think that you have great experience with brand named American firms and that that will help you, but do you really have no career progress? No leadership? Also, I am missing the other piece. Can you reflect on your current extras or personal achievements? What makes you different from other candidates? I hate to write this, but I just need a bit more information

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy,

First of all your help to guide MBA aspirants through this is really appreciable. Thanks in advance.

I wanted to know about the colleges where I can apply if I want to go for a ONE year MBA course from a prestigious insitute in US, Europe or Asia.

My profile is as below:

1) BTECH from IIT Kanpur in 2003. CGPA 7.2/10. IIT Kanpur is believed to be the No.1 engineering insitute of all time in India.

2) GMAT - Will be giving on Aug 7,2008.Please give me some insight about what score should i target for.Currently i am targeting 700.

3) Extracurricular - was actively involved in various cultural activities in college. Was the Cultural Secretary of my department where i orgranized various departmental functions. Also, was an active music club member and worked as the secretary of the music club for one year.

4) Work Experience - 5 years of workex. My work experience has been purely in IT companies which have prestigious positions in the industry. This includes General Electricals, IBM and Fidelity which is my current organization.Unfortunately, i don't have any international exposure as all my project works were completely outsourced to India but i have been continuosly working in diversified MNC culture which i believe is my strength. There were lots of critical tasks assigned to me during my professional career where i was appreciated for my leadership qualities and have got total 4 awards at different stages of my career so far.

Working in big MNCs for only 5 years has never given me any official designation of a team lead or project lead. However, in GE and IBM, there were many instances where i had to do code reviews, work as Functional Group lead and was actively involved in team management activities with my managers.

Please can you share your ideas about what are the areas i really need to improve on.Even if i don't get a chance to get a 1 year MBA course in 2009,i will really like to go for the best possible college in 2010.

Thanks a Lot!!
Thank you for your inquiry.

As I have written a few times, social initiative can often make the difference between comparable candidates. What have you done for these NGOs? I like the fact that you have differentiable work experience, but what do you do? Who do you manage? What are your responsibilities? I need more of your story!

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Thanks.

Hi Jeremy,

First, my profile in brief:

# Indian, Male, 30yrs/9.5 yrs work-ex next fall
# Acads - avg (median of the class), though from NIT Nagpur (in US context, ranked just below Ivies)
# Working in IT, on ERP/CRM. Will have been a Project Manager for almost 3.5 yrs by next fall, earned PMP certification in 2007
# GMAT 740/6.0 (2008 )
# Have managed initiatives that have directly impacted the bottomline of the organization
# Have managed development of dashboard that enables the CEO to assess Sales VPs' performance (interacted with the directorate office for this)
# Have managed sunset of an organization application
# Post-MBA goal is to move into Technology management, specifically targeting CIO/CTO role down the line.

Extra Currics:
# I've been mentoring colleagues & peers towards earning their PMP credential. Just one success so far, but he happened to be my supervisor in the past.
# I've been involved in connecting college alumni (via our unofficial message board), have been global moderator since past 3 years
# I've been supporting our alumni trust fund for past 3 yrs, though only financially. My annual contribution covers about one semester's tuition for a student, the fund has sponsored 14 students so far. This summer have started working with the admins to have it registered as a charity organization. I'll be designated a "founder member". Not sure when it'll happen, though - lot of factors are in play.
# Early this year I helped a team member obtain a donation of computers from the organization to setup a computer lab in his village's primary school - personal financial contribution + obtained contribution from peers (for lab infrastructure), and counseling on how to tackle the bureaucracy
# I am an avid motorcycler and hiker, have been to about 35 hikes/fort-visits. I try my best to spread awareness and curiosity about my people's history at work - though this is a very sporadic and informal activity.

Considering my aspirations and my profile, which business school(s) in the US would you recommend?

Thanks!!

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for taking time to provide your valuable inputs.

I have a few questions :

1. I have read some stories in business week and other forums that international students face problems getting work visas, and given that one has already taken a big loan, it can be a very scary scenario, because one will definitely need an American or European salary at least for two years to pay back the loan. What are your thoughts on the visa scenario?

2. Given my profile( which I 'll briefly describe) , what are the schools that I should be looking at ?
Currently I have sent my score to stanford, chicago gsb, darden, isb,& oxford(said). Should I consider more or different programs (considering that I want to go into consulting post mba).
Will oxford be a good program considering that I intend to switch career form technology to consulting?

A brief snapshot of my profile follows --

At what schools I have a reasonable chance of getting scholarships?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Jeremy,

Hi Jeremy,
Could you please tell me if it is important to have international work experience to get into a top B-school in Europe (especially the UK) and in the USA?
Thanks.

Jeremy,

Really appreciate your help ..your all post were quite insightful.
I am planning to apply for my mba-2009..range i am interested in is top 20 worldwide. Can you please evaluate my chances..

Academics:
Undergrad:3.6..top 10 college India, GMAT: 710 (Q50,V36)
Work Exp 2.5yrs current in the biggest US I-Bank.
International Exposure: Been to NewYork,London,Tokyo..tons to write here because my trips were critical to the business success in the region.
Others:CFA-Level1 (JUNE 2008,Many finance certification like from NSE (National Stock Exchange of India),AMFI (Association of mutual fund of India).

Extracurricular:
Committees head of many activities at school/college..many sports awards i can add there..even national level.

The only area of concern i have is i am a part of a very small team (of 5 ppl) as generally the case in an i-bank..i don't have any sort of managerial exp..although i have a promotion every year till now..will that cover up?

The only reason i want a MBA to speed up my progress in finance sector...
Do i have a chance? in say columbia,stern insead..can i even write HBS/wharton here..given 2.5 exp should i wait for 1 yr?

and i am currently very time constraint..i may miss R1 deadline for many..as my essays are not yet complete...what do you suggest...R1and ok essays OR R2 and somewhat better essays?

Dear Jeremy

Appreciate all the help you are providing us mba-hopefuls with. Here's a brief profile of my background. I'll ask my question at the end:

- 28 / Male / India / Entrepreneur
- BCom with 75% marks from Sydenham College, Mumbai Univ. (one of the best in town)
- MMS (MBA with a different name) in Finance from one of India's best business schools - JBIMS, Mumbai (2003 batch)
- Post MBA 15 months with Tata Consultancy Services as Assistant Business Analyst in New Delhi
- Quit TCS to launch a startup that I've been running successfully for the past 4 years. Incidentally it's a venture in the Pet (dogs, cats) industry and is the only company of its kind in India and has received extensive media coverage both on TV and in print.
- Active Extra curriculars - Held leadership positions in diverse clubs in college from Dramatics to Poor Students Education Relief
- Chairperson of the placement committee at JBIMS
- Actively involved with an animal welfare NGO for the past 15 months
- GMAT score of 740

I am very clear on why I wish to pursue another MBA and my career direction post MBA (which incidentally is to get into Management/Strategy consulting with Mck, BCG, Bain) and I should be able to express this clearly in my essays. I'll also be able to explain what I plan to do with my startup if I join B-school.

Now I am only looking at applying to the following 5 schools - Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg & INSEAD. I am not interested in applying to any other schools since I already have an MBA and am doing reasonably well for myself so I only want to go to the schools of my choice else I would continue with what I am doing at the moment.

With this information, could you please answer the following questions for me:

1) Do I stand a chance at any of the schools of my choice?
2) If Yes, then in which school or schools do you think I stand a stronger chance?
3) Any aspects of my application that you feel I should pay extra attention to, in general or with regards to specific schools?
4) Any other school that you think I should apply to (given my career focus- Consulting/Big 3)?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Sarfraz

Thank you for your inquiry.

I would definitely lead with the Rural Development angle, which seems like your most recent experience. You will risk losing the reader if you start with your software experience see our Monday Morning Essay Tip, over-representing your over-representation. Further, I would stick with the social-entrepreneurial angle, as opposed to the marketing angle with respect to your goals.

I think that HBS, Wharton and Kellogg will be quite difficult, not that Yale and Tuck will be a walk in the park. Last year, Tuck had 500+ Indian applicants, among 3000 applicants overall, and the class only has 250 places. Even a great Indian candidate will find it tough at a Tuck or Yale. Nonetheless, with a high GMAT and your differentiated story, I think you should find a home among the top-15.

Thank you for your inquiry.

I am not sure that this is the year for someone without financial experience to establish goals as a career changer. Furthermore, I would say that this strategy is complicated by being an international it is unlikely that the i-banking firms are going to start spending extra time accommodating visas, etc.

I think that your public sector experience will be respected. Still, in an ultra-competitive year, I might re-take the GMAT if I were seeking "reputation". I am not sure that I have a recommendation for you considering what you are looking for the top schools seem to be reaches, especially in light of your goals. You might be able to find your way into a Cambridge or Oxford; maybe a Duke. I think all will be stretches though

Hi Jeremy,

I am planning to apply for Fall 2009 to top US/UK B-Schools. Could it be possible for you to please suggest few reputed B-Schools for my profile.

GMAT: 680 ( Q-50, V-32)
B.Tech: IIT Delhi ( Ranked no. 1 in India and 23rd worldover )
GPA: 5.5/10
Sex: Female
Work Ex.-till August 2008- 5 years ( 1 year in a Business Research and analytics firm, 4 years in leading Public Sector Enterprise )
Extracurriculars: Average
Community work: Nil , but for some rehabilitation work as part of job in the Public Sector Enterprise.

Post-MBA I wish to get into finance ( wealth management or i-banking), though I dont have any bckground in finance so far. Please suggest few schools for me. I may be wrong, but I consider that an MBA has more to do with brand value that it gives. Therefore, I am looking for reputed programs but given my gmat score I am not sure if I can be through in a top-program.

Looking forward to hear from you.
Thanks and regards,
Thank you for your prodding.

Dear Jeremy,

Kindly respond to my earlier post.

Girdhari
Thank you for your response.

I recognize that you were just trying to help out, but statements like yours are over-simplifications. Wharton is a strong finance school, no doubt, but finance has many disciplines within it. For example, Yale excels at Behavioral Finance. Texas has a remarkable asset management program (where students manage $10+ million dollars in funds). Cornell offers its students a hedgefund to manage. Chicago has excellent scholarship and a wealth of classes in finance, as does CBS. NYU I am just rambling a bit here, but it is important to get away from stereotypes and take a deeper look at what each school has to offer in their finance programs and in their programs overall.

Hi,

For Finance the best school is Wharton.

Rajat,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Doing well on the TOEFL would certainly help you. However, you should over-emphasize the importance of the AWA. If you are very competent in English, as you seem to be, then you can address this in your optional essay. All you would need to do is write a few brief sentences detailing how you have studied/worked/lived in English and how your AWA score is not representative of your abilities. Again, if you want to take the TOEFL, it cant hurt, but if you simply possess the competencies, it may be overkill.

Hello Jeremy,

I am planning to apply in top Indian and European 1 year MBA programs. I have around 9 years of experience in telecommunication product development and GMAT is 700 (V - 38, Q - 48 ), AWA 4.00.
I know my GMAT is in ballpark and AWA is low. Most of the colleges I am planning to apply do not require TOEFL but do you suggest taking TOEFL to explain low AWA score? Someone suggested me taking TOEFL and using additional essay to explain low AWA score.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,
Rajat
Thank you for your inquiry.

I dont think that there is an easy way to plan ahead for Stanford. You need to work hard at being an interesting person holistically and you need to have some good fortune as well.

1) Certifications really will not help you. The schools are looking to identify leaders, not competencies. They will know that you have the intellectual capabilities through your grades and GMAT. You can shore up any questions with a CFA or some management courses, but Indian certifications are not a form of currency with the American AdCom.

2) You should choose a career that you are passionate about and focus on excellence. There is no right career. If you can achieve disproportionately and distinguish yourself, not only for your work, but for your leadership, you will be a strong candidate regardless of field.

3) Volunteer work is an excellent way to distinguish yourself, but again, spirit and initiative are what is important. You should focus on two or three organizations and make your impact felt. Spending your time there will not be helpful, maximizing your affect will be.

Hi Jeremy,
I want to get into an MBA programme at a top international business school by 2011/12. My targets are Ivy League, Cambridge, Stanford etc. I don't have a stellar profile at the moment; my academics both at school and college level have been average. I have completed my engineering and will start working in a few days for a (relatively) small IT firm.

My query is, what steps should I take to shape my profile.

Some of the options I have considered are:
1) Part time/Short term courses/ Certifications : My knowledge of management/finance is almost nill. I would like to take up some short term courses over the next two-three years. Which kind of courses would you suggest that can improve my chances.

2) Change in career: Engineering being a strictly technical job, would I benefit more if I were to take up a consultancy or sales/marketing job. If I have a good career graph in engineering jobs, will it have the same impression as a non engineering job.

3) Voluntary Work: I intend to work as a volunteer for NGOs in my free time. Is this sort of involvement given any weightage by Admission Comittees.

Do you think these efforts would be sufficient? What other steps would you suggest?

Regards and thanks,
Krishna
Thank you for your latest post.

I have actually done some digging into this issue. There really are a variety of policies in place. For example, Berkeley cant offer a position to anyone who has an MBA already. They did not have one person in their class last year who had an MBA. Meanwhile, Ross had a one or two every two years, but this tracks back to years ago. Needless to write, this situation is very rare and will probably be more so in an ultra-competitive year. I would try to explain your reasoning and need in an optional essay. Further, any distinctions that you can bring between your program and a two year U.S. program will be helpful.

I am curious about the information you have gathered, Please feel free to post a summary on this thread.

Thanks Jeremy.. I have taken ur advice and started a thread on this forum..:-o.. Since the educational system in India is different (Most MBA applicants in India are freshers) would clarifying the Indian MBA context in the 'optional essay' help the adcom to get a perspective? Would you suggest that as an option?

International opportunities / experience post an INdian MBA are few and far in between, but without an MBA getting substantial career opportunities is quite difficult in India..

meanwhile, if anyone is reading this post and is planning for a 2nd mba do get in touch... Thanks..
Thank you for your latest post.

I do not have any real understanding of the world of MSs in Finance. Do keep in mind though that they are very different animals one if very targeted and the other is very broad. You should really consider your long term goals and think about which route will give you better tools to advance them.

Hi Jermy,

I have completed my B.Tech in April'08 and am currently working in TCS.If you could please look into my profile and suggest me suitably:

I have just given the GMAT(14th Aug'08 and my score was 700(Q49, V36).

My academic background is:
10th : 89%
12th: 85%
Ungergrad: 8.26/10 (among top 10 in my batch)

But the problem is that I do not have much of a prior work-experience.To be presise by sep'09 it would be 12 months as Software Engineer in TCS.

Because of my lack of work-experience i know i won't be able to get into a really good MBA program if I apply for fall'09.

But many top universities offer programs such as MS in Finance,Management e.t.c. wherein prior work-experience is not required.

Now I wanted to ask you weather I should work for abt 3 years and then apply directly to any MBA programme or apply now to some Masters programme.

I would want to consider the Masters programme if I get a good placement out of it , so that it will really improve my profile and then I could think of pursuing an MBA after Masters and then 2-3 yrs of work ex.

Thanks and Regards,
Saurabh Daftary

Thanx for a great initiative.

My doubt is @ my stretch, realistic and easy schools. I intend to go for General Management with focus on entrepreneurship. The industry I am looking at is Media/Entertainment/Technology. Also, my focus will be Asia-Pacific in long term. What can be my choices?

Here is my profile -
GMAT - 680
Percentage score: 68% at B.E.
Class Rank: Not sure
Undergraduate University: Bachelor of Engg. from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (not really a well-known one, but everything in India is very competitive - I had 93% marks in 10+2)
3 years of work experience : Started as trainee manager, now working as Asst. Manager; Was in direct contact with MD for most of the projects; was a member of core team which was entrusted with initializing and managing change from a print media company to a multimedia company; was sent abroad for new media workshops and seminars; completed Dale-Carnegie leadership training in company's first batch as youngest team member, taken some important corporate initiatives etc. - in sum, I have a work profile which I can bank on
Extracurricular Activities: Lots of sport and cultural activities - National Cadet Corp 'B' certificate holder (second highest of 3); Best Sportsman Award; Worked on some student committees in college etc.
Community Service: I was Regional Volunteer for Green Rating Project - a UNDP funded national level project to assess environmental impact of various industries. This stint was not a long term but was important and was undertaken by CSE a internationally recognised NGO. - I am also active in an alumni group which works for networking, fundraising, supporting etc. activities.
After graduation, I appeared for Civil Services exam - I was into it for about 3 and half years - could not clear it but cleared 2 of the 3 stages of exam. I don't know whether to term this bad or good. Good part is- out of more than 150,000 candidates who appear for this exam every year, only about 1000 can make it to 3rd stage. My concern is that for this period, I can't claim any work experience.

Thanks to you in anticipation.

Jeremy,

I'm an Indian IT applicant(Oh no..not again!). I gave my gmat last week and scored a 660.

My profile:

B tech Computer Engg- 3.5 GPA from a decent institute
GMAT - 660(Q-48, V-33) AWA-5.0
Work ex - IT - 3.5 yrs(by dec '08 ) with a giant MNC.
Worked with top clients(America online, GE). 6 months overseas exp. I've been leading a team of 6 for the past 2 years. Technically not very challenging but my current project has provided decent scope to prove my leadership abilities. Was the youngest module lead in my project.Currently onsite leading an integration effort.

Decent community experience. Been involved with an scholarship program for the under privileged. Not very active due to frequent travel. But whenever I find time I do house visits, talking to the parents of the kids applying for scholarship and participate in disbursing funds and evaluating their financial claims.

I'm looking to move into IT business development, technology consulting or project management with an offshoring perspective.

My worry is my Gmat score, especially my verbal score. I'm really confident of my verbal ability and I think I can address this to a certain extent in my essays. I scored the 99th percentile in CAT(exam to gain entry into the top Indian MBA programs);. Moreover, my hobbies include crosswords and reading and these are fair indicators of my verbal ability.

But I'm not sure if the ad com can be convinced just by the essays. Will I be compared with other Indian IT applicants(read: 700+ gmat scores)? Even if I do manage to secure admission, I'm wondering whether my gmat score will be a weak link when it comes to getting financial aid.

I'm looking at Tepper, Krannert, Darden, Smith(Maryland), UC Irvine(Merage),Carey and TAMU(mays). (Generally schools with good technology presence)

Please evaluate my profile and target schools and let me know if it would make sense to apply this year. If not would a better Gmat score improve my chances of admission and scholarship in further rounds this year? Also, will a good toefl score help offset my poor gmat verbal score??

Thank you for your latest post.

I thought it was quiet common for students, specially those having an MBA from an Indian b-school, to go for a second MBA from an international school like a Harvard or a Wharton. In fact I know of innunmerable people who have an IIM/work ex/foreign b-school MBA profile.

Even right now two of my seniors from JBIMS, Mumbai are pursuing their second MBA at Wharton and I know of two others, one who's been at London Business School for a year and another who's just started off at Yale. Majority of the Indian students at IMD, Lausanne already have an MBA & the case at INSEAD is also not very different

I had also checked with Harvard, Wharton & INSEAD and they said they were absolutely open to people pursuing their second MBA, as long as they could explain their motivations for doing so which is hardly difficult. I mean everything about an international MBA is different right from the Curriculum to the Teaching Structure to the Batch Profile to the Employment Opportunities.

In fact for some reason admissions consultants are the only people who are not sure of or aware of this fact. I spoke to 4 of them out of which 3 said that I was not eligible to apply to any school in the US which is absolutely incorrect.
