Hi ,

sandeep here

My profile:

Work ex of 4.5 years
GMAT score:660(47,34),83 percentile
B.tech percentage 72.8% while the topper of the Univ.(KUK) scored 78.8% marks in Electronics and communication.
Currently handling a team of 20.

how do u see my chances of getting a call from SBS.
Thank you for your inquiry.

I am sure that you know that you are coming from a very competitive group amid a very competitive year. While your GMAT is strong and you have true management experience, complemented by some leadership with Greenpeace, I think that it will be challenging for you to differentiate yourself at Darden, Cornell and Ross. You are likely a reach for all three, so you will need to really focus on standing out via your essays and interviews and make sure that your recommenders understand their duties quite well. You might balance your attack by adding a school or two among Georgetown, Texas, Emory, USC, Babson, Wash U, Kelley, etc.

I know that a 64% can often be a high grade for an Indian program is that the case with your grades?

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Thank you for your response :)

To be honest I have an average GPA (top 20%). If I highlight my Final Year project (Reliance Infocomm) in the additional information essay. will it put my academics in a better light

Please ignore this post

Dear Jeremy,

Really appreciate your valuable inputs.
Thanks for being considerate and taking time to do this.

kevin

Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize for missing your post and appreciate your making me aware of it and your subsequent patience.
1. Work visas: I keep in touch with a lot of my clients and this has never really been a problem. Generally, the firms that recruit on campus are big enough that they have HR people dedicated to these functions. If they want you, most firms will do the legwork. This is my anecdotal experience only.
2. You seem to have a solid foundation grades, GMAT, international work experience, publications, community experience. I am unsure of your professional progress have you been promoted? Do you manage a staff? Are your responsibilities significant? Even without this information, Stanford seems to be unlikely and Chicago seems like a stretch in an ultracompetitive year. Still, Darden and Oxford should be within range if you can tell a compelling professional story. It is very difficult to gauge whether you will be competitive with respect to scholarships

Hello Jeremy,
I would like to apply in 2010 for MBA in Finance from TOP 15 B-schools of US or TOP 10 internationally (excluding US).
Request you to please evaluate my profile and determine how would my profile stand in face of stiff competition.
A run through my profile:
class X : 79%
class XII : 72.9%
B.E. (Mechanical) : 73.6% (From one of the Top 10 Tech Universities in India)
GMAT : 710/5

I am a mechanical Engineer by degree but I have 1.5 years of experience in IT sector working for one of the top 3 IT companies of India. I was made Configuration Team Leader (CTL) within 4 months of joining the company. As CTL I had the additional responsibility to act as ADMIN for Technologies used in my account. As an Assistant System Engineer I have had frequent interactions and presentations with Client. I have also offered on-site support to their system.
My extra-curricular front is average at best and apart from sponsoring a child to take care of his education and well being and some voluntary teaching assignments on one to one basis, there is not much to add.
I intend to improve on that front in next 1.5 years.
Apart from these, I also volunteered for Teach India Initiative from Times Of India but was never asked to teach.
I am also a Level 1 candidate for CFA june'09 and I'm determined to clear till Level 2 before I join any B-school.

However I have some queries:
1) I intend to move back to Mechanical Engineering field mostly due to family reasons (I need to support them financially a bit which I am not able to do in my low salary in IT sector). It would also allow me to pursue my hobby (Shooting) which I had to abandon due to its high cost.
I would like to know how will it be viewed during the application process,i.e.,from Mech ->IT ->Mech?

2) Although I have helped several children in their education by gifting them books or paying their fees since my college days, I have never kept any record for the same and I don't have any proof in terms of Certificates to show for it (Gathering them was never an intention any way).
So how could I prove my involvement?

Apart from these, I would request you to suggest any other areas of improvement that you find is lacking in my profile.
Thanks.

Dear Jeremy,

I would like to request your inputs on my profile and your suggestions on some of the schools i can look at.

Hi...

I guess every application has this question built into its essays some way or the other... And from whatever research I have done, it is a very important question that most adcoms use to differentiate their candidates with...

"Why this school"

I guess on broad disciplines it is easier to classify schools. For instance if I want to take a finance centric curriculum, Id go to Wharton, Chicago or Stern. But within these schools, how does one distinguish one program from the other.

For instance I am applying to Sloan and my essays are clearly oriented towards a career in IB. How do I stress on the fact that Sloan is the right program for me... In other words... "Why Sloan"???

Any inputs????

Dear Jeremy,

I would like to request your inputs on my profile and your suggestions on some of the schools i can look at. I am a 28 year old Indian female.

Educational Background:
1.) B.E. Electronics & Communication.(2000-2004)

2.) Juniper Networks - 1.5 years.
Took care of testing an entire feature set before it was released to customers and also mentoring new recruits in my domain.
I had suggested a few changes in the way we were doing things, and they were well received and implemented too.
I had also managed other people in absence of the manager and should be able to get good recommendations from my manager there.

Other professional experiences:
1.) 2 month training experience at Tata Iron and Steel company.
2) I am CCNA certified(94%) and CCNP certified in one domain(100%). Planning to do the rest soon.

Extracurriculars + Recent activities:
1) Scored 70 % in the All India USO (United School Organizations of India) examination

9)Used to write poems in school and had a few articles and poems published too(I am not sure if I still have those magazines with me, as proof though)
Test Scores:
GMAT - Will be taking it soon and am hoping for a score of around 700.

I know based on what I have mentioned my profile doesnt stand out, and to add to my woe, I have been unemployed for a year now-I am in US on H4(dependent visa) with my husband. Couldnt get a H1b in 2008(it was a lottery system and my appln wasnt picked up in the lottery) and had a year wasted. Am applying for the same this year too, and would be appearing for my GMAT and a few career related certifications in the meanwhile.

I am joining a voulnteer program as a CASA(Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteer. All CASA volunteers are trained in courtroom procedure, social services, the juvenile justice system, and the special needs of abused and neglected children.

I am also planning to tutor adult learners around my area, starting Jan.

I am looking for a 1 year MBA program, to basically put my career on a fastrack.

That's about it. I would really appreciate if you could help me with the following queries:

1) Given my profile, what colleges would be within reach. Will it be realistic aiming for top 8-15 colleges in US?
2) If I pick up a sport now, say Tennis, and teach kids about the game or something similar, would that be a good add on to my profile?
3) What can I do to add on to my profile? I am expecting to get back to work by July this year. Should I get back to work, add on more experience for a year and then give the top B schools a shot(in 2010), or should I apply in 2009?
4) If I apply and dont get through in 2009, would my reapplication be looked upon favaorably, in 2010, by the same B schools?

Since I will not be employed till May, I can take up various activities. I would really appreciate any guidance from you.

Thanks you for your time! Looking forward to your reply.

hi this is dipanjan sen and i have a question for jeremy as well as PG seniors in this forum.
profile BTech 6.5 CGPA Mech engg NIT Jalandhar
12th 68% Punjab State Board
10th 86% CBSE
Currently employed in an automobile company.
i have little extra currics to speak of.

now my ULTIMATE GOAL is to get an mba from a top 20 US b-school and since i am from the services background family fortune is not an option. also i am not very pro to the idea of taking a huge educational loan.

now i have two career paths in mind to help me build my profile in terms of suitable work experience required to full advantage of the MBA degree.
1. to do an MS(which is again a bit tough as i dont have any considerable undergraduate research work to show, scoring high in GRE is the only way i guess) then work for some time in the US and then after 4-6 yrs of work ex apply to b school

2. to an mba here in india now. work for some time either here or abroad and gain manegerial work experience and then go for a second mba from a top US college but i have heard that b schools in US schools are not very keen towards granting admission to people who have already done an MBA

so can u please help me out from this situation.

Hi Jeremy,

Good to see you help us all in waging , what I would i call, a really difficult battle.
I took my GMAT on 13th December with a score of 660 (49 Quant, 31 Verbal). I am currently working in IBM India as a software engineer and have a net work ex of 3.5 years. I did my mechanical engineering from Delhi college of engineering(Delhi university).
Here is how my academic statistics go:

Class Xth board- 90.2%
Class XIIth board-80%
B.E. (Mechanical)-68%

I want to pursue the 2 year full-time mba program and have shortlisted some universities based on my own assessment, feedback from friends and other fellow mba admission seekers. Here are some of them:
1. Kelley
2. University of Notre Dame(Mendoza)
3. Texas A&M; University
4. University of Minnesota(Carlson)
5. University of Rochester(Simon)
6. University of Georgia(Terry)
7. Arizona state University(Carey)
8. Rice university

As you can see, most of these universities fall in the 25-45 range of rankings (barring Kelley) as per the general surveys. I wanted to know if there are some others(considering my score and my profile) that I can add to this list and also, whether there is a significant disadvantage in pursuing a mba program from lower ranked universities as against pursuing from the Kellogs, the Whartons of the world...

I would really appreciate if you give a feedback on my chances and assist me in selecting the right universities.

Thanks

Hi Jeremy,

I want to do my Full time MBA. I am eyeing NUS or Nanyang and I would like to know what else I can do in building my profile to stand out from other IT competitors.

My Profile :

Aggregate of 73 in Engineering From a reputed college.

Working for the past 2 years in a US Giant corp as a sw engineer.
I have won many accolades and recd Certificate of achievements in my work.

Started a German community in my workplace to start teaching Basic german to co workers.

I have also done some technical certs but not sure if they will help me in this case.

I have been playing professional cricket for the past 10 years and have played for first division etc.(Does sports really have an added advantage while applying ???)

I am trained in SIX sigma and will do my Green belt certification pretty soon.

Trained in one foreign language(German) and planning to write a german lit exam(Is foreign language a plus point).

Planning to write my GMAT in may.

Thanks and you are really doing a great job!!!

Hi Jeremy,

I am writing into this thread for the first time, and hence would like to introduce myself.

I am Sarsij Nayanam, did my BE(ECE) from BIT Mesra and now working as a R&D; Engineer in one of the Indian MNCs. My total work ex is 3.5 years (as of now).

I have been selected at Asian Institute of Management, (AIM) Manila for its September 2009 batch. But I wish to apply for few more colleges and then decide about joining any particular college.

I wish to Focus mainly on the Asian Colleges (because of the financial constraints) and if thats not possible then US/UK colleges. .

Now here are certain questions which are hounting me

1. Is it possible to expect scolarships in schools for an average candidate like me. .

2. I don't have a GMAT score, will write GMAT somewhere in April-May and then will start applying, is it possible to hear something positive from the schools by July- Aug 2009??

3. Which all colleges would you guys suggest based on my profile (BE + 3.5 yrs work-ex + International exposure, and apart from this, my scores in academics have always been average.). My biggest constraint is 25Lac, I can not cross this amount.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks & Regards

Sarsij Nayanam
Hi Jermey,

need your feedback on how to address weak under grad performance

my profile

Gmat - 730 (Q 47, V 42)
10th 86%
12th 61% (Had accidents in final year of school)
Graduate of India's top law School Gpa - 3.1/7 (50%)
Worked in the legal dept of a fortune 60s firm in India.
Then Senior Analyst in a fortune 30s firm's Analytics division promoted to advisor
Working as contracts manager for India Region now for same firm and only 1 step removed from GM - India in reporting hierarchy. total 5.5 years now.
Have received awards. promotions from both firms, also headed a major business impact project, presently part of a business project.

Extra-curricular

Captained the University Basketball, Soccer and Athletics Team., Member Hockey and Volleyball teams. Various sports awards including best athlete. Captain of the corporate soccer team, amateur soccer club, etc. Represented my district for basketball while in school and was on the basketball team and captained the soccer team in school. Certified for paragliding and scuba diving. Trekking, photography and reading are interests.
Member of the student representative council, convener of a committee etc, in college
Member of the advisory board for an NGO, active in community civil defense initiatives and consumer protection initiatives now. Setting up an outsourcing firm.

My greatest weakness seems to be my undergrad gpa and I plan to take an alternative course or a certification before I apply to B-schools to demonstrate academic aptitude.
My options seem to be CFA level 1 or PMP in relation to my project or an evening business or quant related course in a local college. Will any of these help me offset my bad grades in college? What would be the best strategy? I have a decent GMAT and have done well at work as well, but I'd like to cover all bases before I apply.

I want to get into consulting after B-school. Any feed back will be appreciated.

Hi Jeremy,

I found this site pretty late.. shows how much prep went into my GMAT.. anyways my profile looks like

Undergrad GPA - 3.5
GMAT - 610
Work Experience - 2 yrs in IT (India's leading IT company)

I have already applied to Rutgers, UTD, Katz and SUNY Buffalo. How do you rate my chances??

Katz interview next week but otherwise havent heard from any other school yet.

Now though my experience was just two years, i had a managerial job where i had to lead a team in a very critical project. Have been appreciated for that and have won a lot of awards for it. I have a whole load of family business to show in case they want any kind of leadership activities. I am also senior manager in Oriflame India limited - i guess i can show that for my marketing skills.

I want to do an MBA in general management. Its more on expanding the family business of lodging, textiles and exports. I am planning to apply to a couple of other colleges in the US also. Can you suggest a few other colleges that i can apply to?
