Hello Siddharth,
Yes, it is OK to ask your previous supervisor for a letter of recommendation. The AdComs are interested in getting the perspective of someone who has worked closely with you and he or she will still be able to provide that perspective even though neither of you work at that company any longer.

Hello,
I want to make sure that I understand your question. You are looking for business schools that have resources for students interested in marketing, strategy and what industry? Is there a specific industry you are interested in? Also, when you write "higher experience," do you mean a higher number of years of work experience? Can you be more specific about your age or the number of years of work experience you have? That would help me answer your questions more appropriately. Thank you,
Sincerely,

Hello,
Thank You for sharing your insight.Basically I have worked 60% of my time within my companies (all 3) in devising sales strategy, business process improvement, vendor development, ERP/CRM implementation and 40% in sales, marketing and business development in past 5 years. I plan to apply nxt yr n by thn time i will join ne college i will have 6.5-7 yrs of work exp. Due to drop in education I will be 30 by tht time.
Post MBA I want to work in strategic marketing (GE/Honeywell/Siemens/Sony/Apple/Google/Microsoft and likes) OR management Consulting profiles, so I wanted to join a b school which is flexible in curriculum, allows me to take some quant courses in Decision/ Strategy, General Management, Leadership, International Business....
So I decided on LBS, Insead, IMD full time MBA programmes only.I wanted your opinion on my current selection and other good programmes in US which can help me achieve objectives
Thanks again !!
Best Regards
Nitin
I am planning to apply to about 5 schools for an MBA in the coming rounds. Besides ISB, I am aiming at courses in US and UK. Please can you evaluate my profile and suggest which schools I should consider applying to?
GMAT: 730 (Verbal 41, Quant -49 , AWA- 6)
GRE: 1580 (Verbal 780 ,Quant -800 , AWA- 5.5)
Acads : above average in school. Merit ranker in class 12th.
Bachelors in Electronics Engg. from Pune Univ. with decent overall grades. Nothing spectacular though.
Work Experience: Ive been working for a leading Oilfield Service Provider since July 2007 as an electrical engineer . I was among the first batch of engineers recruited for working in a new engineering center that was set up in India.
We started out with all the teething troubles of a start-up. The center in Pune does concurrent assignments with product development teams in the larger, older more renowned Technology centers in Paris and Houston. Being in the first batch, I have contributed to setting up processes and systems from scratch, in addition to buiding enough credibility with the other centers so that they work with us. My recos will support this.
My projects have not been technically challenging. Theyve been more about setting up efficient systems. Theyve also involved collaborative effort with teams in France. I have been to France twice the sort out the concept stages of both projects. Back at home, Ive worked on the projects with minimum guidance (my managers have always been mechanical engineers J ). Ive got pretty good reviews for my work. I can ask my managers, both in India and France, for Reco Letters.
I was also chosen to lead a team 6 months into the job. I have received good reviews for what the team achieved and for leadership.
During the course of work, I continue to be involved in training and mentoring new recruits. A recurrent feature of all my reviews has been excellent communication and presentation skills.
Other than that Ive had decent extra currics in school and college with the standard event organization , quizzes, debates, etc. I am also a licensed amateur HAM radio operator, read avidly and follow motorsports for a hobby. I have learnt level 1 French and can understand conversational French. I have no significant community service to speak of.
My questions are as follows:
1> I am not a number cruncher. I should be good in a role which involves talking, listening and convincing. Given my profile which schools should I target with a good chance of getting in? Which will be the aspirational ones?
2> I am not very clear about my career path. Crude evaluation leads me to believe I should be good at sales or consulting type of a role in the future, but its not cut- and- dry. Will this be considered a handicap?
3> Since most bschools quote average work exp of ~5 years, will my 3-years-at-joining be enough to hold the attention of the adcom?
4> Incidentally, I have a great GRE score. I know some MBA courses (Harvard, Standford, MIT) accept candidates based on GRE scores. Should I considering applying here?
Sorry to you and the puys reading this post for the word-count. Ill keep it short in the future, guys.
Thanks in advance for your time. Best Regards,
Rashmi.

Hello Nitin,
Thank you for clarifying your question. Based on your professional interests, most business schools will be able to fit your needs as you seem to be looking for a general management program. You should also look closely at the marketing resources of each of the schools you are interested in.
Given your interest in a flexible curriculum, you might want to consider the University of Chicago. With only one required course (LEAD), Chicago Booth has an extremely flexible curriculum. It is in the top five of U.S. business schools and since I do not know your grades or your history of leadership and achievement at work and outside of work, I dont know how competitive you would be for the University of Chicago, but it is a strong general management school with a customizable curriculum. Similarly LBS allows students to customize their curriculum. Insead is a bit less flexible in that it has 13 required core courses and 10.5 electives. I recommend researching the resources and curricula of these school in order to determine whether they are a good fit for you.
Sincerely,
Akiba Smith-Francis

Hi Akiba,
I am currently B.Tech 3rd year, Comp. Sci and Engg. in NIT Allahabad. I am looking forward to doing MBA from one of the best schools in US or UK. My brief profile is as follows:
10th: 75%
12th: 84%
College Grades: not so good but i am working hard on it. till the end of my engg i expect my CPI to be around 8

Have won some business events in some of the fests. am the YES!+ president of Allahabad and have organised many AOL courses in Allahabd.
Q: What to add in my profile so that a good G MAT score is the last thing I need?
Q: How much work experience do you suggest is required?
Q: Should the work experience be in management companies or technical companies can also do the job if there is continues progression?
Best Regards,

Hello Rashmi,
Thank you for providing so much detail. I will do my best to answer all of your questions in the order in which you asked them. In terms of your question regarding the schools you should apply to, there are hundreds of MBA programs. The decision of schools you apply to should be based on your interests, the schools strengths, how well your qualifications fit with the student body and your personal preferences. For example, you may prefer the case method, or a small class, or perhaps you want to live in a big city rather than a small town. If you are just at the beginning of the school selection process, you might apply to, I recommend reading publications like Businessweek and U.S. News & World Report that provide detail about a large number of MBA programs. This is a great place to start.
I do think it is important to spend time considering your career path. Many business schools ask, in their essay questions, about your career vision and if you cannot answer that question in a credible and compelling way, it may negatively affect your candidacy. You are not required to have 5 years of work experience. There are many business school students with three years of work experience, so I would not worry about that. The important thing is that you have the professional experiences you feel that you need to contribute to a business school class.
You should make your decision about where to apply based on your interests and fit with the school, not based on the fact that some schools accept the GRE and you have a good GRE score. The score of a standardized test, whether it is the GRE or the GMAT, will not be the definitive factor in your candidacy. It is just one of many factors. I hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Akiba Smith-Francis

Hello Rohit,
Business schools are looking for leadership and achievement both at work and outside of work. I would concentrate on finding opportunities to allow you to demonstrate these things as you prepare to apply to MBA programs. There is typically no required number of years of work experience. Some MBA programs even accept students directly out of college this does not happen frequently, but it does happen for those exceptional college students who are able to demonstrate leadership and achievement. You should apply after you feel that have gotten the work experience that you need to be able to contribute in an MBA program.
Your ability to contribute and learn is the most important thing in terms of your professional development. That can take place at a variety of companies. MBA students come from a diverse set of professional experiences, including business, government and the non-profit sector, so I would choose the company you work for based on your professional interests, the skills you want to develop and the experiences want to have. Best of luck!
Sincerely,
Akiba Smith-Francis

Hello Akiba
My question was pertaining to schools renowned more for strategy/marketing or general management. For e.g. Chicago and Columbia are more renowned for Finance whereas Kellogg is more renowned for Marketing. So I wanted to understand which are some of the other schools in US and Europe who are more renowned for Marketing and/or Strategy. Also most of the B-schools are focused on Banking and/or Consulting for recruitment except for say IMD. So are there any b-schools in US or Europe that are more industry focused? In terms of Work Experience my work experience would be close to 8 years at the time of applying but I see an average work experience of around 5 years except IMD. So are some schools known to take people with more number of years of work experience in US and Europe? I hope I have not asked too many questions in one mail. But would really appreciate your comments.

Hi
I have 4 year exp in IT industry working as a support subject mater expert and development team lead. I want to switch to finance.
Following are my academic details:
10th - 86 %
12th - 83 %
B.E IT - 63 %
Recos - Ok
Extra Curricular - Average
Communication - Good
I have appeared for CFA Level 1 in June 2009, results awaited. I am yet to take GMAT. I am looking at MBA Finance/ MS Finance degrees.
Looking at my less exp and non-finance field and not so great extra-curricular, I am ready to settle for not-the-best college. Also, I have some financial constraints, so I am looking at 1-year courses and at upcoming regions like Asia, Aus/NZ, and Europe (Europe minus UK) since these regions are relatively cheaper compared to US/ Canada/ UK. I will prefer to get into college asap, next fall rather than wait.
I have just started doing feasibility study of colleges, so my current knowledge is poor. Considering three scenarios of me getting GMAT scores of 650/700/750, please guide.

Hello,
Most business schools provide a general management education. I would not agree that most schools are focused on banking or consulting. That is a bit of a myth or stereotype that many business schools have been working to overcome. In terms of your question about marketing, there are many schools that have invested heavily in their resources dedicated to the marketing function. One example includes the University of Chicago, which you mentioned. The school established the James Kilts Center for Marketing ten years ago and more recently Mr. Kilts (a GSB alumnus and former CEO of Gilette and Nabisco) donated $1 million, via a grant challenge, to attract and fund top students interested in marketing. As a result, since the 2006-2007 academic year the GSB has provided $50,000 in financial support (over two years) as well as a senior marketing executive mentor to ten students. As you can see with Chicago Booth, you should probably do some research into the marketing resources of the schools that you are generally interested in. Many schools that are well known for strengths in another industry or function, will have significant resources dedicated to marketing.
In terms of the number of years of work experience you have, you are right at the cusp of the point at which some schools might consider you a better fit for a part-time MBA. That written, there are some students who are admitted to full time MBA programs with 8 years of work experience. You should check the range of years of work experience in addition to the average number of years of work experience. If you fall on the upper end of the range, you might want to address why you chose to wait to apply to business school and why you feel this is the right time for you to go. Perhaps you had a number of great professional opportunities that you did not want to give up by going to business school. And as always, will also be important to present a clear career vision and explain how an MBA from XYZ school will supplement your existing skills and experience in a way that will help you achieve your professional goals.
Sincerely,
Akiba Smith-Francis

Hello Lionking/ MBA Mission team,
Though this forum is meant for MBA mission to answer queries, but Based on response to my queries from MBA mission team and further research as recommended by them here are my 2 cents -
- Chicago - greatly flexible course - even in core courses you can select the course you want to attend + It has International MBA programme if thats wat interests you + I went through
- LBS - greatly flexible programme + 1 project + 1 internship both of which are paid if you are lucky (at least one) + flexibility to finish off the programme in 15/18/21 months + failry good marketing faculty
- IMD - selective school - which implies lesser alumni worldwide, practically no electives and not very useful for carrer changer...financing wud be trickier here
- Insead - very good programme + more thn 50% class is having 5 yrs + experience - however not very flexible...you will have to target Jan intake so as to take advantage of internship....+ facility to switch campus can add significantly to exposure ( Asia + Europe) However the major con would be financing options unlike LBS/ US b schools not much help from school
-Cambridge, Judge - relatively new school (2001) but gud flexeible course, offers opportunity to do project + internship + consulting assignments...most of the class is 6 + yrs experienced...good option to launch carrer in Europe cons - placement services are not as through as other top tier b schools
I also realized that in all bschools in US also at least 10% of class is 5+ yrs of experience and similarly apprx 10% with 2- yrs of exp...and at any of these top B schools though your batchmate mite be less experienced but thr will always be smethng great to learn frm him/her...

Hi HJD,
It is difficult to say which business schools are best suited for your profile as the answer(s) would be based on some of your preferences. There are many schools that would help to prepare you for a job and long-term career in project management.
I would advise you to think about what type of school appeals to you...large or small class size? rural or urban location? lecture or case based teaching? rigid or flexible curriculum? Taking some time to think about these questions will help direct your search for a program.
I hope this helps.

Erin

Hi,
My name is Nigel Rowe. I am looking to pursue an MBA from the UK for which i had a few queries in mind.
Before asking any questions here's a bit about myself. I have completed my Bachelors Degree In Engineering and i am currently working with Capgemini Consulting India Pvt Ltd (Mumbai). I have been working for the past 30 months.
I have some questions in mind and I would like your opinion on them.
1) After my 1 year of Study i will look forward to work in the UK for atleast a few more years. But in the event that i fail to get a job there, then does the UK MBA degree have value in India? Will i get a good job here? Considering my UK degree and past work experience.
2) I heard the universities don't offer campus placements there. So could you give me the names of some of the reputed organizations there to whom i can plan to apply for a job to once my study is completed?
3) How can i find a part time job there? Do i have to go there and then find one or can i apply from here only before leaving?
4) How is the job situation in the UK? Would i stand a good chance to get a job there after 1 year (say in September 2010)?
5) How is the University of Lincoln and the Roehampton University for an MBA degree?
Well these are few questions i could think of. I'd be grateful if someone could help me out even with a few of these.
Thanks a lot.
Cheers.
- Nigel Rowe.

Hi -
Just to clarify, are you asking for recommendations for schools to which you should apply under the three GMAT scenarios? Also, it sounds like your preference is a one year program in Asia, Aus/NZ and Europe? We tend to have more expertise in US 2 year and part-time programs as well as with international programs like INSEAD, IMD, Cambridge, Oxford and LBS.
Thanks,
