Ask Jeremy @ MBAMission.com - What it takes to get to the best global business school

Hi Erin/Jeremy,

Could you suggest me some schools and my chances in the ones I have mentioned.
My profile is as below:
1) Basic demographic info:

Age : 25 years
Gender Male
Nationality : Indian

2) Educational Background:

Completed my Graduation from a Manipal University in 2006 with a Bachelors of Engineering Degree in Electronics and Communication. Had a CGPA of 4.0/4.0
GMAT score : 750 (M:50, V:41)
Was associated with a few Clubs during Graduation. Have a couple of Internal Paper presentations during graduation.

3) Work experience:

Working as a Design Engineer in Freescale Semiconductors. Current Work Experience of 3 years with an expected Promotion this year.
Have a couple of certificates of Recognition for my work during the past 3 years.
Have had regular Interaction with Team Members all over the Globe.

4) Extracurriculars:

Not very strong in this area of the application. Was associated with a few Clubs during graduation with limited role. Not a very active member.

5) Short/Long term goals:

I want to work outside (i.e outside India) for around 3-5 years after my MBA and then come back and settle in India.
Not interested in Settling outside India.

6) Schools:

Financing my MBA is a very important criteria for choosing a School.
I would prefer to have a 100% scholarship in a top 50 school rather than no scholarship in the Top 20.

I had shortlisted a few schools but will like to know schools among the Top 50 will be good with high scholarship.
A few shortlisted schools are:

Ohio State University : Fisher
Michigan State University : Board
Nanyang Business School
Emory
Darden
Manchester
Lanchester

It will be great if you could suggest me some schools which can provide a good scholarship for my profile.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi -

I don't mean to be vague with this answer but judging which schools may offer the best scholarships is difficult for the following reasons -- First, there is tremendous variation in the criteria and selection process for scholarships at MBA programs. Many schools offer both merit and need based scholarships/grants. Further, as it has been widely reported, many endowment funds have performed poorly during the recent bear market, thus the scholarship situation may be changing.

It is best to check in with each school in which you are interested and ask specifically about the scholarships for which you may be eligible.

Erin

Hi Erin,

Thanks for the inputs.

My main focus is on scholarships as I am not from a financially strong family.
In India, you get a Max student loan of around Rs 20L (i.e $40000 only).
Financing my MBA with this amount wont be possible without a scholarship, as most of the Schools offer loans with a US Citizen as cosigner. As I do not know any US Citizen personally, this option is not on which I can count on.

I would be great if you could also suggest some schools which offer Loans without a cosigner.

Also,
What do you feel about my chances in the below schools. I have an interest towards operations.

Emory
Carnegie Mellon
Purdue
Georgetown

Thanks in advance.

Hi -

There are many programs in the US that have partnerships with banks and can offer loans without a cosigner. As I mentioned, there has been some flux in these programs due to the credit crises, but many are in tact. It is best to check with each school in which you are interested. I would suggest perusing the Financial Aid Section of the school's website or calling the Financial Aid Office directly if you are unable to find answers on the web.

Regarding your chances at the schools listed, it is difficult to gauge based on this limited information. Your challenge will be to distinguish yourself from applicants with a similar background to your own. Your GMAT score and academics appear strong and it sounds as though you will be able to display an upward trajectory in your career. The lack of extracurriculars/community service will be a weakness in your application. Might you have the opportunity to round out this area prior to applying?

Best,
Erin

I think I was not specific regarding my query on Indian CFA.hence, more specifically, how does american Univ. view Indian CFA as compared to American CFA? Actually in few posts Jeremy had advised MBA aspirants over here to pursue CFA course to show excellence in academic and finance field.I already have my Indian CFA degree. So,does it serve the same purpose which Jeremy mentioned (regarding academic excellence )
Thanks Erin for all your guidance and kind support

Regards

Hello,

I am not overly familiar with the Indian CFA. I do know, however, that the American CFA is recognized globally. With that said, given your Masters in Finance and solid score on the GMAT, you seem to have demonstrated a solid foundation in finance/quantitative ability so taking the American CFA does not seem to be necessary at this point.

Dear Jeremy,

My profile is as below:
10th Class : 87%
12th Class: 95%
B.E. (Hons) Electrical and Electronics & M.Sc (Hons) Physics from one of the top 5 colleges in India. Graduated with around 3.6 (GPA)

GMAT: 700 (Q50 V34) AWA: 6.0
TOFEL: Took this over 5 years ago and got 287/300. Need to re-take TOFEL in the new format

Work Experience: 6 and years by the time I join in 2010.

Work Profile:
I am working as a Project Lead for over 3 years for a major European Chip Design Company, for its Automotive Design Group. I am the Lead Designer for the product and thus, I lead the technical and management of the product design which has defined a new platform of products. I am also, the Project Lead for its derivative product.

As a Project Lead, I handle all issues from project planning, feasibility study, project budgeting, product architecture definition, customer queries etc. The entire project team is based out of 3 different geographical locations across the globe. I manage and co-ordinate the functioning of various teams and align them to the project deadlines and deliverables.

The technical challenges have produced 2 new ideas from my design team which are in the process of being patented by the company.

Before joining the existing company, I worked with an American Chip Design company for 2 years the core design group. Then I moved to the company where I am working now.

International Experience:
I have worked in Belgium for 6 months with a University research lab as part of a collaborative effort between the company and university.

I have visited Austria and Italy numerous times as part of my responsibility as a Project Lead with various product related issues.

I also was one of the two students from my University who was chosen to do a project with a research lab in Italy to work towards my Masters thesis.

My total international exposure has been with teams from over 5 geographical locations and over 2 years.

Other Initiatives:

I have co-founded a Non-profit organization which works towards
a) Developing a democratic platform for children, and
b) For environmental issues in the city

The approach is to sensitize children to the issues of today and help them evolve into responsible citizens of the country.

I am also part of a core group people, a partnership between the Govt. and the civil society. This group works towards spreading awareness about various issues which impact the metropolitan life. This core group has various senior members of the Indian bureaucracy and accomplished members of various NGO.

I have co-authored a paper which has been accepted by an International Journal/Book on sustainable development practices.

Core Focus/ Motivation for an MBA:

As a practicing engineer my approach is scientific. So, I want to be associated with a sector with a technical orientation where I can bring together my engineering bent and my passion for environment and energy efficient solutions.

Thus, post my MBA, I want to work in the energy sector. I think there is scope for enormous innovative solutions which can optimize and make our life efficient. Smart and renewable energy solutions are the need of the hour.

I have identified universities which offer courses and electives where I can study the various aspects of energy and sustainable development.

1)Yale
2)Duke
3)Cornell
4)Northwestern
5)Ross

What are my chances in these universities? Are there any other universities which also offer such courses? Which universities can I assume will be a safe application?

Please advice.

Thank you.

Hi Erin,

had a couple of questions:

1. which are the colleges in US with a strong focus on entrepreneurship - colleges which actively help their students shape their business ideas and obtain funding?

2. In which of those colleges do I have a realistic chance of getting through?

My profile:
Good acads (B.E in Electronics from Manipal. GPA:3.72/4)
Worked as a design engineer in STMicroelectronics for 3 years.
Ran my own venture (unsuccessfully) for nearly a year - finalist in business plan competitions.
Now working as a business development manager for a startup.
GMAT score 710.
Strong extracurriculars.

Thanks

Hi Nitin,

Regarding your question on summer internships, I would refer you to the INSEAD/IMD websites, specifically the most recent employment report which will contain much information regarding placement for both summer internships and full-time work. These reports will provide you with a sense of what percent of the class found summer internships as well as what function and location for full-time employment.

Regarding your question about start dates for full-time employment, I am not an expert in this matter. However, I would surmise that both situations arise...perhaps you may consider contacting the career services office at each school to get their view.

Hi -

Sounds like your candidacy offers interesting professional experience, strong academic and GMAT scores, community service involvement and personal passion. Congrats!

In your essays, you will need to highlight how your experience(s) and story differs from others with a similar technical background to your own.

It is very hard to gauge your chances with limited information; however it seems as though you have a well balanced list of schools and it appears that you have done your research regarding the types of programs that may fit best with your long-term goals and interests. One other school that you may consider is the Haas School of Business which also is known for a focus on sustainable enterprise (amongst other things of course!).

Lastly, I would recommend starting the process with regards to retaking the TOEFL as soon as possible. It is my understanding that it can take some time to secure a test date so you don't want that to hold you up.

Erin

MBA Mission Essay Analysis
As schools release their essay questions, we offer tips on how to approach each question. Here's the analysis for the University of Chicago Booth School of Business:

mbaMission - Boutique MBA Admissions Consulting Blog Blog Archive University of Chicago (Booth) Essay Analysis, 2009-2010

1. How did you choose your most recent job/internship and how did this experience influence your future goals? What about the Chicago Booth MBA makes you feel it is the next best step in your career at this time? (750-1,000 words)

Because Personal Statements are similar from one application to the next, we have produced the "mbaMission Personal Statement Guide." We offer this guide to candidates free of charge, via our online store. Please feel free to download your copy today.

Chicago Booth's first essay question does warrant some additional discussion beyond the broadly applicable ideas available in our Personal Statement Guide, however. You should be sure to note that Booth asks you to focus on your most recent position, so you will need to be conscientious and not just paste in your career history section from your NYU application, for example. Further, you must also respond to the "how" question and not just tell the Admissions Committee what you accomplished in your most recent position. The Admissions Committee wants to understand that you have the ability to make reasoned professional decisions. So, your past professional choice will serve as the evidence they need to ensure that you are making the right choice in applying to Booth, that you have a sound career plan going forward (or an ability to react to changing circumstances) and that you will be thoughtful and resourceful about your career beyond Booth's doors.

2. Please choose one of the following (500-750 words):

The two questions Booth offers as options for essay two will require you to be contrite and to accept your weaknesses, frailties or mistakes. Chicago Booth will be impressed by candidates' abilities to be honest and will not look kindly on those who refuse to accept responsibility or who attempt to shift blame to others. Nevertheless, you do not need to turn your sword on yourself and engage in any savage condemnations. You will impress the Admissions Committee with honesty, rather than negatively surprise the committee with a brutal approach.

Describe a time when you wish you could have retracted something you said or did. When did you realize your mistake and how did you handle the situation?

While, again, you should strive to leave yourself exposed and reveal that you are not a perfect human being, we feel that after setting the stage for your mistake, you should focus the majority of your essay on how you resolved the issue (and as always, we emphasize the importance of conveying the "how" element). By showing your actions, you will, ideally, reveal your self-awareness, honesty, reasoned ability to resolve problems and more, all of which will enable you to effectively convey your overall strength of character.

-or-

Describe a time when you were surprised by feedback that you received. What was the feedback and why were you surprised?

As you write this essay, you might consider leading the reader through a narrative that clearly shows that you believe you are making a series of "correct" choices. Then, you might introduce the feedback that you received, which would then indicate a very sharp contrast to your actions. Indeed, this contrast is the crux of what makes your story interesting-the conflict between your intentions and reality. (Many of these essays fail because the contrast presented is not particularly sharp, and thus, the situation does not effectively catch the reader's interest.) Even though the question of what you learned from the feedback is not asked, we feel that it would be appropriate for you to address this aspect of the situation and, in some cases, even show that you implemented changes accordingly going forward. This final element should not be belabored, however, and candidates should be careful not to go off on a long tangent about other experiences. Stay focused on the core conflict and the reasons you were ultimately "surprised" by the feedback you received.

Slide Presentation

We have asked for a great deal of information throughout this application and now invite you to tell us about yourself. In four slides or less please answer the following question: What have you not already shared in your application that you would like your future classmates to know about you?

We have set forth the following guidelines for you to consider when creating your presentation. The content is completely up to you. There is no right or wrong approach to this essay. Feel free to use the software you are most comfortable with. Acceptable formats for upload in the online application system are PowerPoint or PDF. There is a strict maximum of four (4) slides, though you can provide fewer than four if you choose. Slides will be printed and added to your file for review; therefore, flash, hyperlinks, embedded videos, music, etc. will not be viewed by the committee. You are limited to text and static images to convey your points. Color may be used.

Slides will be evaluated on the quality of content and ability to convey your ideas, not on technical expertise or presentation. You are welcome to attach a document containing notes if you feel a deeper explanation of your slides is necessary. However, the hope is the slide is able to stand alone and convey your ideas clearly. You will not be penalized for adding notes, but you should not construct a slide with the intention of using the notes section as a consistent means of explanation.

At mbaMission, we really welcome this creative approach to self-expression. Chicago's unique slide presentation is truly a blank slate and thus presents an incredible opportunity for candidates to differentiate themselves by creating a concept that is entirely distinct from thousands of others. What is great about this option is that in a traditional essay, your task is to differentiate yourself using only your content, but in this presentation, you can showcase your unique attributes through your content while also captivating your audience via your creativity, made clear through your design. (This is not to suggest that the slide presentation is an artistic competition, but we do feel that the presentation has the potential to engage and hold the reader/viewer in a unique way and thus is an opportunity that should be seized to maximum effect.)

Because the slide presentation leaves so much room for creative interpretation, we would need to collaborate directly with candidates to devise personal strategies. As a general rule, however, we recommend that candidates first consider their content and then devise a design that will allow them to best communicate all of their important information in a unique and compelling way. You do not want to make the mistake of choosing a method of presentation that is distinct and captivating but that limits your ability to tell your story in its entirety. Fully understanding and crafting your content first will prevent this from happening and will start you on the right track.

Hi

To answer your first question, there are many US business schools that have a strong focus on entrepreneurship and also assist students in building and funding their business ideas. The best way to get detailed information about the specific offerings is to research the Entrepreneurship Section of each school's Web Site. Many schools have a Center for Entrepreneurial Studies on campus - examples of this would include the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at NYU, the Zell Lurie Institute at Michigan and the Arthur Rock Center at HBS (to name only a few). These Centers/Institutes also sponsor business plan contests which are open to students in the MBA program an in some instances alumni as well.

Secondly, while it is hard to gauge your chances of acceptance, it sounds as though you bring strong academics and GMAT scores. You mentioned you have solid extracurricular experience which is a positive and it sounds as though you have transitioned in your career from a highly technical position to one that is perhaps more strategic in nature. Lastly, your entrepreneurial experience, even though unsuccessful will be noticed by AdComs. I would suggest looking at a mix of schools within the top 20 to create a balanced list of targeted programs.

Regards,
Erin

Hi,

You could consider adding one or two schools like Booth or Wharton as stretch schools. Regarding the one year or two year MBA, this is somewhat of a personal decision as some applicants prefer a shorter program while others like the idea of a longer time frame in which to explore opportunities after graduation. Also, nearly all students in two year programs obtain summer internships, while in the one year program, this is not always the case.

In terms of additional information, I think you did a good job of laying out your background. With that said, as you know, the application process is competitive and it is quite difficult to say with certainty about anyone's chances at a specific school. This is why we recommend taking a balanced approach in building your targeted school list.

Regards,
Erin

Hi,

Thanks for the inquiry and providing detailed background information. It sounds as though you are able to point to an upward trajectory professionally and have some extracurricular activities to round our your application.

In terms of the international programs you listed, we tend to have more experience with INSEAD, LBS, so I am not extremely familiar with some of the programs you listed.

Regarding your GMAT score, how many times have you taken the test? If you have only taken it once, I would suggest retaking it to improve your chances at some of the US programs. While the GMAT score isn't everything, a score of 700 is the benchmark for success. Just by sitting for the test more than once, you are also showing to AdCom(s) that you are determined and dedicated to go back to business school.

Regards,
Erin

Hi Erin,

Thanks for a quick reply.

I definitely can improve my score and cross the 700 benchmark. Considering my profile, matched up with 700GMAT, what schools do you recommend? Please recommend some US schools as am having little hard time evaluating myself when it comes to US schools.

Thanks,
