Books for CAT preparation

hey glamdoll,
Can u please tell whether this Nishit sinha for quants is a formula based book like Abhijeet Guha or u can reall suggest it for concept building in maths. Like, i currently have QA by Abhijeet Guha which is having so many formulaes for evry chapter. Please help me out!

Well i am listing down the material i used for CAT'07 prep ...it was of gr8 help to me ....and i hope it is of gud help to the ppl giving a shot at CAT '08 as well.

VA/RC

This was my strongest section always so i'll take this up first ..i scored 98%tile in VA and i think the stuff that i read gelped me attain this score.
My advice to fellow puys wud be don't confine yourselves to the material given by various coaching institutes....read and try to digest whatevr you get your hands on as far as VA is concerned.
I was a regular reader of the Hindu's editorial pages ...the content here is rich and it'll help u increase ur vocab immensely. It'll also increase ur knowledge abt the geo-political scenario in the world and u'll be a little bit at ease at the time of GD -PI's . There are some regular sections in these pages tht cud help u in the inferential RC's as well .
For RC's it is best if you read a wide range of books and magazines including some non-fiction ones like "Zen and the art of motor cycle maintenance ". If you can understand these , the tough RC's wont bother you much .
In CAT'07 grammar and usage made a comeback and in a big way . So use any material u have for this , jus make sure u get enough practice and u know ur grammar rules like common sense . I used IMS material and Wren and Martin . For practice of grammar/ usage based questions, test papers of IMS/TIME/CL are very gud .
Almost 2-3 jumbled sentences based questions are asked in almost every CAT paper and this is seriously a tough nut to crack . To be well versed in this i practiced the questions tht appeared in the last 6-7 yrs CAT pprs . The test papers of IMS/TIME are also quite gud.
You can subscribe to dictionary.com's word of the day and A Word A Day from Wordsmith. Using these i had made my own word list , which helped somewhat in CAT but it was of gr8 use in other papers after CAT which have a lot of vocab based questions

LR/DI

For LR/DI i think, its best to practice as many types of questions as possible. If ur exposed to a gud number of sets before the CAT paper u probably crack 3-4 sets on the C-day with ease.
The questions tht appered in TIME's AIMCAT are undoubtedly the best source to practice for this section's , in my opinion. They will definitely increase ur ability to crack tough/complex questions and increase ur speed. IMS Simcats are also of good help .
If ur having a torrid time with the puzzle based questions practice some puzzles from Shakuntla Devi's famous books of puzzles or George Summers.
For pure DI type questions i think number crunching is very important. There are some tricks , for fast mental calculation which most inti's teach , these are mostly basic principle's from vedic maths . So try to learn some of them for multiplication / squares .

Quant

I used the very popular Arun Sharma , which was of little help. I also used, Trishna's Quantitave Ability for CAT which is a good book in my opinion . It has a wide variety of question of all levels.
I also practiced questions from previous year's CAT papers . These help you in understanding what sort of questions actually come in CAT (not tht u can predict them though).
Questions from IMS/TIME's test series are also quite gud

Moderators please move the thread if i posted in a wrong section.

Flowery, when you posted your query for the first time, I'm sure it was seen by people here, no need to copy-paste it again. Secondly, the book is copyrighted, and is not a free ebook. It costs about 100 odd bucks in the market (I think). Also, you can try looking up google or esnips to find it.

Please post a query only once, and wait for a reply.

Trishna's book is the best according to me... I'd used this book extensively during my CAT study for quant prep for the foll reasons:

1. Fundas clearly explained at the beginning of each chapter
2. Hundreds of problems in each chapter, divided into three levels of difficulty.
3. Problem-solutions available at the end of the book
4. 10 mock-tests at the end of the book.

This book was my bible throughout for quant prep. You can check it out at any TIME centre.

Thanks for your suggestion buddy...

Can we avail it separately from any Time Center or do we have to take the whole study material of Time to get the hold of this book..

This book is available for sale at TIME centres individually as well as certain bookstores. I suggest that you get hold of some TIME student, and ask him/her to buy this book for you because enrolled students get a big discount on the market price.

For VA, Wren and martin is definitely apt book to start off with.It has really good grammer concepts clearly outlined.

You can also do Barrons word list to increase ur range of words.

You can work side by side work on RC, by taking any coaching materias book.Read newspaper and start reading topics which u hate or are unaware of.This makes reading more challenging.

Just practice mock papers regularly later on.

PS - personal opinion.

if you are interested only in CAT then a basic understanding of grammer is fine the more important part ins comprehension hence any good coaching class' study material is more than sufficient....
