Should I do any NGO work to uplift my application and some course in advance excel or business communication

So I would like to share an experience of mine regarding a certain MBA college in India. I did my graduation from a reputed college in Kolkata followed by a post graduation from an institution which has been awarded with the center of excellence in the field of journalism. I also carry a bit of experience having worked as a correspondent in a few media houses in Delhi

It was in 2016 that I decided to leave my job and appear for the CAT exams next year since I felt a career in marketing would be a good prospect for me and since journalism had already taken a toll on me mentally. So I prepared for something which was extremely difficult for me since I do not come from a science or commerce background, also I did not have mathematics as a subject after class 10. But still I worked hard and did decently in the national level MBA entrances and managed to crack maximum of the interviews I got called for.

Now came the big decision of selecting which one I would like to go for. I got admission letters from colleges both in Kolkata and from other states. But since I already had spent a considerable amount of time outside Kolkata, for once I was quite reluctant to leave my hometown for the next two years and also the colleges where I got outside my hometown where not very high ranked colleges where I would be compelled to go. So I decided to take admission in a college called Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management which is also the first management college in India. The decision was based mainly on the financial aspect since my father is retired and I did not want to put any more burden on him and my family was strictly against me taking a loan for this.

So as the process is in every B-school in the country, we were made to submit all documents related to our educational life, work experience, entrance marks, and all other documents related to us for verification. It was not just once, multiple times documents were submitted to the college administration. Finally I was said that all my degrees and everything is at place and I just need to pay the admission fees and start my classes. Also since I already had taken my migration from Calcutta University, I was said that I also need to do the registration process directly from the University but after a few days. I also did not have the migration certificate from my college in Delhi so I had to anyway wait.

Till here everything was fine. I started my classes , I got my migration within July and now I went to the administration to submit all the documents. It took a few days more as there was a change in administration and a new person came in. After days or months finally all the documents were stamped and verified and signed by the Registrar and now I was asked to give it to the University for the final process. This was in September , when I was finally given the stamped copies of the documents. I went there and again I had to wait few days since some way or the other the process could not start.

By now our mid term exams had already started. I finally got a chance to submit the documents in the migration department of the university where a big shock was waiting for me. It was told to me very casually that I do not meet the criteria set aside by the college for admission in their MBA course. The reason was I had a BSc major degree in my graduation from Calcutta University whereas it is mandatory for a person to have a honors or a professional degree to get admission in MBA in that institute. I was speechless for a few moments. I went to the college administration who said we would talk to the university directly. Time was also running out since our semester exams were supposed to start from November and we had to register before that.

After one week I went to the administration again. This time they told me that it wont be possible for me to register since they wont allow. They told me to talk to the HOD of the course who also was new at that point of time. I went and tried to explain him the situation. I had always seen teachers as guides from my previous institutions where teachers were there to help us always. But I was wrong in this case. The person was so reluctant to help that he told me he cant do anything and will not mediate since according to him, I should have checked the eligibility criteria before taking an admission. He even went to such an extent that he ridiculed my alma matter, which are colleges like St. Xaviers and Indian Institute of Mass Communication. All roads were gradually closing for me and I was looking at an year loss which would be detrimental to my career.

The main issue according to me was that if I was not meeting the criteria of the college then why wasn’t I told about it when I produced all the documents for verification or when I filled up my form. Surprisingly people with major degree from other universities were allowed to register by CU, where they did not accept their own major degree to be equivalent to an honors degree. The only option now was to go to higher authorities both in CU and in the college.

So I went to the Director of the institute right before the college was supposed to close for the Durga Puja holidays. She listened to my problems very patiently and understood what I was going through. My father who is a senior citizen now, also had to come to accompany me. She assured us that the problem would be sorted and they would try find an exception for me this time since I had already started my classes and it is also their negligence in verification and also asked me to continue coming for classes.

Now the college reopened in October and I went to talk to her about it, she asked me to go and talk to the migration department again. I went, this time they told me one way my admission could be saved is by getting a letter from the HOD stating that there was a mistake in this case and to treat is an exceptional case and grant me registration. Then only they can discuss about it and it could be done. So again I came and told this to the director who asked me to convince the HOD to write the letter and she would forward it.

As I said earlier, the whole administration of this college is non compliant and hardly helpful to the students, so he denied. He told me he would never write any letter since that would put him in a difficult place and the only way he could help me is by refunding back the full amount paid by me so far. Again my father had to come in order to know what would happen since I was repeatedly told the same thing by the administration. Finally in the first week of November since there was no hope left for me, we decided to withdraw my admission and give CAT which was supposed to take place later that month, without any preparation. I was given back the whole amount and so we did not consider taking legal actions anymore.

What I faced was extreme harassment where I was made to wait for three months to know that I was not eligible for the course. I was even part of a committee in the college and it was so difficult to come to terms with the reality. Other than this I would like to say a few things about the college. The college operated from a building that might be as old as its existence. The classes are big with ceilings falling off and leaking acs which floods the whole class whenever it rains heavily. And during heavy rains, the streets are completely waterlogged so be ready for it. The library contains books that are so old that they can be hardly used during exams. Other than the infrastructure, the college follows a curriculum which has been set by the CU, and which is probably as old as the course. The structure has remained the same with additions every year. Coupled with this are the teaching style, which incorporates only theory and hardly any case studies. There is also no connection between the teachers and the students as they just come, complete the classes and leave. Sometimes we used to have so many free classes in between that sometimes we used to wonder why do we even come for classes. The attendance rule is farce with some students hardly coming to college ever, yet they are allowed to sit for exams. The placement scenario is comparatively better but that is also because of the Placement Committee’s hard work. But one thing that is to take care by the new students is to never trust the placement brochure or the stats provided by the college during admissions since there are always a catch to the best and the average placements they show. Jobs that students achieve through placement pools that have been done in some other colleges are also put in the placement stats of the college without informing the students that the particular company did not come directly to the college for placements. Other than all these the environment of the college is suffocating with people coming to class only to get good marks rather than to learn new things. The seniors are somewhat helpful but majority of them want to follow a junior senior relationship based on authority and respect rather than being colleagues.

It is very important for potential MBA candidates who might not be happy with the colleges they are going to, understand that not every institution is perfect but wherever you are, you need to work hard to get a job. You have to feel lucky that you did not have to face the same situations that I did or study in a place like this where the environment will choke you till you fail. And people who are going to start their journey with this college, Good luck to them as well. There were a few ex students who suggested this college on Quora when I asked which college to join, so this is dedicated to them. Be informed, know the pros and cons before taking a decision and do not listen to anyone. This is for every one of you who is confused which B-school to join to help them with a perspective which they might not find anywhere.
