The sum of four numbers is 253. The ratio of the first to the second is 2 : 3. The ratio of the second to the third is 5 : 6. The ratio of the third to the fourth is 8 : 9. What is the average of the second and the third number? Can anyone help me by providing the method to equate the three ratios ?

My question is simple, when I start solving any maths problem my brain starts feeling tired/fatigue. On top of it, I have to solve many questions in an exam. Here is an example question.
>> And here are my questions on it -- My questions - 
1) How do you keep all these information in your brain?2) Do you need to read/re-read all these questions again and again?3) I feel so tired/fatigue that I don't even feel like reading these long questions. How do you tackle this situation. Is this normal or you don't feel tired or fatigue?
4) Do you write on a paper all the information given while reading/re-reading or can you store this question information in your mind?
5) How do you keep yourself free from tiredness when reading these lengthy questions?Given the fact that you have to complete this question quickly. So, there is a time pressure also.
6) I don't know the meaning of geckoes in this example. Suppose, you also don't know - how do you tackle this situation. I can't imagine anything while understanding this question.  And when I don't know the meaning, I feel like this is the most difficult question for me.
What is the way to think and solve such lengthy maths problems in the competitive exams?
Example Question - 

  • Suppose I discovered that my cat had a taste for the adorable little geckoes that live in the bushes and vines in my yard, back when I lived in Arizona. In one month, suppose he deposited the following on my carpet: six gray geckoes, twelve geckoes that had dropped their tails in an effort to escape capture, and fifteen geckoes that he'd chewed on a little. Only one of the geckoes was gray, chewed on, and tailless; two were gray and tailless but not chewed on; two were gray and chewed on but not tailless. If there were a total of 24geckoes left on my carpet that month, and all of the geckoes were at least one of "gray", "tailless", and "chewed on", how many were tailless and chewed on but not gray?
