Okay there is this question from LOD I of Arun Sharma's chapter on progressions, Q 37. I can't seem to comprehend the solution given at the end of the exercise. Kindly help.

Also, I feel that, Q42 from the same exercise is solved wrong in the book. I may be wrong. Here's what I feel. After a square is formed form the mid points of a larger square of side 8 units, we can never get a square of area 32 units (contrary to what is  mentioned in the solution), by joining the mid points of a square of side 8 units. A square of 8 units will yield an area of 64 units, followed by a square of side 4 units (giving an area of 16 units, not 32 units), and so on. Is my procedure right or wrong?

Answers will be greatly appreciated
