भारत में लगभग 14,500 किमी. आंतरिक नौपरिवहन योग्य जलमार्ग हैं। देश में कुल 12 नदियां ऐसी हैं जिन्हें बड़ी नदियों की श्रेणी में रखा जा सकता है। इन नदियों का कुल अपवाह क्षेत्रफल 2,528,000 वर्ग किमी. है। भारत की सभी प्रमुख नदियां निम्नलिखित तीन क्षेत्रों से निकलती हैं-
1. हिमालय या काराकोरम श्रृंखला
2. मध्य भारत की विंध्य और सतपुरा श्रृंखला
3. पश्चिमी भारत में साह्यïद्री अथवा पश्चिमी घाट हिमालय से निकलने वाली नदियों को यहां के ग्लेशियरों से जल प्राप्त होता है। इनकी खास बात यह है कि पूरे वर्ष इन नदियों में जल रहता है। अन्य दो नदी प्रणालियां पूरी तरह से मानसून पर ही निर्भर हैं और गर्मी के दौरान छोटी नदियां मात्र बन कर रह जाती हैं। हिमालय से पाकिस्तान बह कर जाने वाली नदियों में सिंधु, ब्यास, चिनाब, राबी, सतलुज और झेलम शामिल हैं। गंगा-ब्रह्म्पुत्र प्रणाली का जल अपवाह क्षेत्र सबसे ज्यादा 1,100,000 वर्ग किमी. है। गंगा का उद्गम स्थल उत्तरांचल के गंगोत्री ग्लेशियर से है। यह दक्षिण-पूर्व दिशा में बहते हुए बंगाल की खाड़ी में जाकर गिरती है। ब्रह्म्ïापुत्र नदी का उद्गम स्थल तिब्बत में है और अरुणाचल प्रदेश में यह भारत में प्रवेश करती है। यह पश्चिम की ओर बढ़ते हुए बांग्लादेश में गंगा से मिल जाती है। पश्चिमी घाट दक्कन की सभी नदियों का स्रोत है। इसमें महानदी, गोदावरी, कृष्णा और कावेरी नदियां शामिल हैं। ये सभी नदियां बंगाल की खाड़ी में गिरती हैं। भारत की कुल 20 फीसदी जल अपवाह इन नदियों के द्वारा ही होता है। भारत की मुख्य खाडिय़ों में कांबे की खाड़ी, कच्छ की खाड़ी और मन्नार की खाड़ी शामिल हैं। जल संधियों में पाल्क जलसंधि है जो भारत और श्रीलंका को अलग करती है, टेन डिग्री चैनल अंडमान को निकोबार द्वीपसमूह से अलग करता है और ऐट डिग्री चैनल लक्षद्वीप और अमिनदीवी द्वीपसमूह को मिनीकॉय द्वीप से अलग करता है। महत्वपूर्ण अंतरीपों में भारत की मुख्यभूमि के धुर दक्षिण भाग में स्थित कन्याकुमारी, इंदिरा प्वाइंट (भारत का धुर दक्षिण हिस्सा), रामा ब्रिज और प्वाइंट कालीमेरे शामिल हैं। अरब सागर भारत के पश्चिमी किनारे पर पड़ता है, बंगाल की खाड़ी और हिंद महासागर भारत के क्रमश: पूर्वी और दक्षिणी भाग में स्थित हैं। छोटे सागरों में लक्षद्वीप सागर और निकोबार सागर शामिल हैं। भारत में चार प्रवाल भित्ति क्षेत्र हैं। ये चार क्षेत्र अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीपसमूह, मन्नार की खाड़ी, लक्षद्वीप और कच्छ की खाड़ी में स्थित हैं। महत्वपूर्ण झीलों में चिल्क झील (उड़ीसा में स्थित भारत की सबसे बड़ी साल्टवाटर झील), आंध्र प्रदेश की कोल्लेरू झील, मणिपुर की लोकतक झील, कश्मीर की डल झील, राजस्थान की सांभर झील और केरल की सस्थामकोट्टा झील शामिल हैं।
