helloo can anybody plz tell me wat was d last rank for d SC category called for gd/pi in iit madras last year
It would be difficult to know the last rank to be called for the SC category. However, the last person of the SC category to get in was with a rank of 9276.
hi puys... well its tht time when every second seems like a day!!!
my question regardign jmet call for dg / pi n then final converts is that, when they say tht calls were sent out uptill rank arnd 2700 types, but the last rank to get into any iit was arnd 1500... so is it like there is no chance for a person with rank greater than 1500 (for example) can stand a chance?
or is it like if someone has had a rather bad day at jmet, bt does quite well in the gd pi, would get thru, even if he / she has a rank greater than 2000??
i guess a bit premature question, but then it took about 50 seconds to type this, which is, at the moment like 50days!!!!

I can very well understand how you feel. Don't worry, just chill and hope for the best. Of course all this is better said than done :)
There is a band up till which the college sends out calls. Theoretically speaking, yes, if you are at the end of spectrum of the ranks then you may find it difficult.
However, I would like to believe that if the faculty has decided to give a chance to you then they think you are as good as the person 300-400 ranks ahead of you. When you go in front of them in the GT (we conduct a Group Task, not a Group Discussion: a Group Task is done to evaluate you skills as a manager, planner, and team player when strategizing to conduct a task that may range from things like entirely arranging your brother's marriage to planning how to lower the stress of IT professionals of the software company that you work in) and the PI, which shall include a strict scrutiny of the essay that tells them why you want to do an MBA. The ball is in you court when you get the call and if you have given a good shot then you stand a good chance. So all the best and hope to see you at DoMS IITM.

The Business Consulting specialization offers you a chance to study subjects that will help you become a consultant. This subject is primarily taught by a faculty who drove its the North American strategic planning activities for TCS for several years. In addition the dept also calls several consultants for bringing us up to date with the latest developments in this field. Also we students run a Consulting Club that regularly meets up to introduce, discuss and revise various management principles and concepts that could be used in the consulting practice.
As a management consultant you can join companies such as KPMG, Deloitte, Avalon Consulting and Technopak.

Hi Hari,
Good to know that you are interested in getting admitted to DoMS IITM. However, let me clarify that though a program of IIT Madras, its not a technical MBA, as it is thought to be. Its a well-rounded MBA programme that gives exposure to each and every facet of MBA.
The highest rank in our senior batch was AIR 10 and the lowest was 2200. In our batch the highest rank was around AIR 120 and lowest was around 1500s. The avg work ex from the batch of 2008 is 24 months and that for our batch is 25 months.
The GT stands for Group Task where your abilities as a manager, planner and strategizing individual are tested. You may be asked to plan a marriage in your home, frame a strategy to convert footfalls into sales in a mall, or make plans to reduce the stress for executives who work in an IT firm. In these roles you must discuss the steps need for completing the task, your plans for it, discuss the problems you might face and then come up with workable solutions. You will also be assessed on your skills of working along with a group. Since its not a GD, you are not expected to shout over the rooftop, in fact during my GT the faculty stopped the group to remind that we were there to discuss solutions and not shout and thrust our opinions.
In the PI your profile is scrutinized, reasons are sought for your MBA aspirations, and you need to justify your reasons for the same. Here, the essay describing your reasons for pursuing an MBA from IITM, which is to be send along with the application form also comes into picture. Also, the faculty might try to know why you did such and such a thing in your life or career and again may ask you to justify your reasons. The PI's idea will be to know whether you will fit in as a student in the MBA programme and what sort of value you will add to it when you discuss mgmt concepts and cases in various subjects. They try to look for clarity in your life's goals.
In your case, you will probably need to justify your decision to move from M.E. to an M.B.A since that would entail pursuing another post-graduate degree. They might ask why not go for Ph.D. So try to build a strong reply on this front. You can probably talk about your experience at TCS which should have given you exposure to the corporate scenario. You may also be quizzed on your decision to quit NITIE. Remember, the aim will be to show clarity in decisions and goals in life and convince them that an MBA degree will help you reach your target better.
As for your performance in the mock exams, it seems that you have done well in those. Hope that you exceed such performance in JMET and get short-listed. All the best.
P.S: Pls avoid posting your mail id on public posts in this forum as its against the rules.
Shortlisted ppl can apply to DoMS IITM by filling in this application form. Pls follow all the instructions such as:
1. Fill in all your correct details. 2. Send alongwith the form a DD for Rs.500/- for GN, Rs.250/- for SC/ST/PH, Rs.800/- for Sponsored candidates and US $100/- for FN/NRI drawn in favour of The Registrar, IIT Madras and payable at Chennai. 3. Attach copies of detailed mark sheets of all semesters/years of the qualifying degree. 4. Do not staple the application form. Use gem clips. 5. Do not fold the application. Send it in A4 or larger sized cover. 6. Send the application before 28th Jan 2008. 7. Send the essay stating reasons for wanting to pursue MBA at IIT Madras along with info and evidence that will support them.

Hi Hari,
Well, Here is what I have understood about your profile. Graduation: NIT Nagpur. Work Ex: 10 months in TCS Currently in IISc Bangalore
The word that immediately comes to my mind is IMPRESSIVE. :)
Ranks: People as high ranked as 10 to around 1400-1500 are here. The Interviewers are the faculty members and they have HUGE Industry and Teaching experience. So they are not only looking at your Rank but the entire package that you present.
GT-PI Quagmire had comprehensively written about GT in one of the posts above. But the gist is that GT is not a decibel game where you make yourself heard 4 times and score brownie points. It has many finer elements wherein your ability as Team Player is evaluated.
Team Player who can structure the discussion
Team Player who can give directions.
Team Player who can conclude meaningfully.
Gaps in profile: Their isnt a single prescribed profile that DoMS is looking for. We have large variety w.r.t. background, work experience, geography, interests and inclinations etc. Some of the things that help you in an interview
Clarity of thought (Very important in an Interview)
Good Academics (Fundamentals)
Good Communication Skills
Excellence in a chosen field
You have profile which is possibly unique in its own way. The Institute has its set of goals and hopefully you would fit in. It would be rather inappropriate on my behalf to speak for the Institute on this particular point. As I said no single prescribed profile.
A word of caution. You seem very enthusiastic about the MBA Programme at DOMS_IITM. At the same time it is necessary that your expectation from the programme are rational enough. What a mean by that is .. Your euphoria should not blind you from evaluating things objectively.
I candidly admit it because its important that you do not get swayed by any particular aspect of the programme. Not only at DoMS_IITM but any other place.
Personally, I feel DoMS is a great place to be in.
Some of the best faculty. Their papers are published in the most respected Journals. Internationally renowned faculty.
Plenty of scope for extra-curricular activities.
Eclectic Student Mix.
Constant Industry Interaction
Good Infrastructure
Strong Alumni Network. And much more.
All the best in your endeavours. See you in the Campus.
got an air of 2700 4 yrs wkex in a PSU any chance of getting a call from any iit
thanks n regds sandhya
Sandhya, & Dexter
At 2400 & 2700 it would be difficult to get a call at IIT M, but you never know, calls depend on number of applications that we receive and what the faculty would be looking for in the new batch. So you might receive a call on the basis of your work ex and statement of purpose. The last rank to convert in the 2009 batch was in early 1500s and that in the 2008 batch was in 2200. So we are expecting ranks to only go higher in the new incoming batch.
Dont lose hope, i think you should be getting calls from IIT R, IIT K and IISc. All the best for your other results and give your best shot at XAT
I've got AIR 1834... n am having decent acads with 19 months of work-ex in IT as of now... Do I stand any chance of getting a call? which institutes shud i apply??????

Thanks in advance!
As I said earlier calls would depend on the number of applications we receive and what the faculty would be looking for. I think you stand a decent chance of getting a call from all IITs except IIT B and D. All the best.
